New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said on Thursday that he would ask US President Donald Trump to withdraw federal immigration agents from the city following a shooting involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in the Bronx. According to the New York Police Department (NYPD), a man was shot at around 4:00 pm in the Marble Hill neighborhood during an altercation with federal agents. Mamdani and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) later confirmed that the incident took place during an ICE operation. The agency has been at the forefront of Trump's nationwide immigration crackdown. A DHS spokesperson said agents were attempting to arrest a man described by the department as a criminal illegal alien from the Dominican Republic. The spokesperson said the individual had a prior criminal conviction for grand larceny and multiple previous arrests involving assault, robbery, drug possession and weapons possession. The statement did not clarify how many agents fired their weapons or explain what led to the shooting. "ICE officers immediately rendered aid. The individual is alive and at a local hospital," the DHS spokesperson said. DHS initially claimed that the individual had links to a Dominican gang. However, the department later released a revised statement that omitted the allegation. Mamdani said a five-year-old child was inside the vehicle when the confrontation took place, raising further concerns about the circumstances surrounding the incident. "This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation," the Democratic mayor said on X, adding that he had called Trump. "When we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities," he added. Also Read: Trump honours Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella with top technology honour amid immigration scrutiny

This afternoon in Marble Hill, a New Yorker was shot by an ICE agent in a residential neighborhood. Early reports indicate agents surrounded him and a 5-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds. We believe the child was physically unharmed.

This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation. I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities.

Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We are praying for his recovery.

Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Get ICE away from our children.

Abolish ICE.— Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani (@NYCMayor) October 8, 2026

Protests erupt after Bronx ICE shooting
Several hundred protesters gathered peacefully near the shooting scene on Thursday evening to demonstrate against the Trump administration's immigration crackdown, according to AFP. Many demonstrators later moved to a nearby hospital where the injured man was receiving treatment. Tensions rose when some protesters attempted to prevent vehicles from leaving the hospital premises. Law enforcement officers subsequently moved the demonstrators away from the entrance and established barriers to control the situation. New York Governor Kathy Hochul also called for answers, posting on X Thursday that she expects “federal authorities to provide a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident.” Murad Awawdeh, president of the New York Immigration Coalition, condemned the shooting and called for an investigation into the actions of federal agents. "This incident is another reminder of the unchecked, rampant violence ICE has been spreading throughout our communities," Awawdeh said. “We demand an immediate investigation into the shooting, the release of the body camera footage, and accountability for any ICE agents who used excessive force.”
