NEPAL FLOOD LIVE: Nepal is still counting the dead and searching for thousands of missing people, five days after a devastating wall of mud and water tore through the Himalayan border region. The official death toll has climbed to 788, while around 2,500 people remain unaccounted for.

Rescue teams are battling thick debris, damaged roads and swollen rivers across affected areas along the Trishuli and surrounding river systems. New images show buildings destroyed, roads washed away and infrastructure reduced to rubble after the powerful flood surge swept down from the Tibet region.

A major focus of the rescue operation is now on hydropower projects, where workers are feared trapped inside tunnels. More than 100 workers could still be alive across several tunnels, while Nepal’s disaster management authorities have reported around 933 hydropower workers missing since the floods struck.

Rescue teams are drilling access points, pumping air through pipes and sending cameras underground in an effort to locate survivors.

Nepal is also facing a growing humanitarian and identification crisis as morgues fill and some victims become difficult to identify. Authorities have temporarily buried unidentified bodies after collecting DNA samples and other evidence. Prime Minister Balendra Shah has said the samples will be preserved to help identify victims and eventually return them to their families.

NEPAL FLOOD: 788 Dead, 2,500 Missing | 933 Hydropower Workers Feared Trapped

Nepal has faced a devastating series of natural disasters over the years, from powerful earthquakes and deadly flash floods to landslides, glacial lake outbursts and extreme monsoon rains.

As the country confronts another major flood disaster along the Nepal-Tibet border, this report looks back at some of the most significant natural disasters to hit Nepal in recent years.

The latest disaster has sent shock waves across the region, with rescue teams racing against time as aid reaches some of the worst-hit areas. Flash floods and mudslides have damaged roads, bridges and homes, while families continue to wait for news of their loved ones.

The report looks back at the 2024 Rasuwa flash flood, triggered by a glacial lake outburst, which killed at least eight people and left dozens missing while also washing away the Nepal-China Friendship Bridge.

It also revisits the September 2024 floods and landslides, when extreme rainfall affected large parts of Nepal, including Kathmandu, with major river basins severely impacted.

In November 2023, a powerful earthquake struck Jajarkot, killing 154 people and injuring hundreds more, while damaging thousands of homes across western Nepal.

The timeline also includes the 2021 Melamchi floods, the devastating 2017 monsoon floods, and the catastrophic 2015 Nepal earthquake, one of the deadliest disasters in the country’s modern history.
