A top boss of a News Corp company in Australia has apologised for making what appeared to be a Nazi salute following backlash from the Jewish community. Patrick Delaney, the CEO of Foxtel, a cable company majority owned by News Corp, found himself in a soup after an old picture of him doing the 'Nazi salute' resurfaced.

"This evening, a ten-year-old photograph of me making an inappropriate salute which is highly offensive to the Jewish community was published online. I am very sorry for my actions and sincerely apologise to people who have been hurt or offended espesially the members of the Jewish community," he said in an email dated Sunday (Aug 18), the text of which was released by Crikey.com, which first reported about the photo.

"Since becoming aware of this photo, I have been searching my mind for a circumstance, from over a decade ago, where a photo capturing me in this pose could ever be possible. The picture is completely inconsistent with my values and beliefs, and family connections," he added.

Delaney "unreservedly" apologised after trying to initially explain it out saying he thought he was showing the similarity between the Nazi salute and a gesture used by fans of an Australian soccer club.

"Regardless of the context, the fact I demonstrated this offensive salute was wrong," he said, according to a report in the BBC.

The photo was taken a decade ago. His apology came as the Jewish Council of Australia condemned his actions as "deeply concerning", particularly given that he is leading a media company.

"It shouldn't need to be said that the salute is an offensive and violent act not only for Jews, but also for other racialised groups," said Sarah Schwartz, the council's executive officer, while adding that it's equally concerning that he operates in a media industry "where he felt this was somehow okay."&nbsp;

As per the Foxtel CEO, he was impersonating "a threatening gesture" made by some fans of Western Sydney Wanderers, a soccer club, during the 2014-15 season, while visiting the set of a Fox Sports television programme when he was the CEO of that channel.

In his apology, Delenay condemned "racism in all its forms", pointing to his commitment to the 'Say No to Antisemitism letter', the BBC said.

The letter was&nbsp; signed by him as well as some other influential Australians from all walks of life following the Hamas terror attack on Israel last October.

Delaney is no stranger to controversy. In 2022, he was in the news for calling the star of Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke a "short, dumpy girl."

Fans of the Sydney United 58 football club drew wide condemnation for displaying Nazi symbols and salute at the Australia Cup final.

Videos and images that went viral on social media purportedly showed fans singing “Za Dom Spremni” (for homeland–ready) — a chant used by the far-right Ustase movement in the 1930s and 1940s.

Apart from that, the flag of the Ustase movement, which represents the Croatian fascist movement, was also on display.

According to reports, the supporters were attempting to drown out the Indigenous welcoming ceremony prior to kick-off at Western Sydney Stadium.

Football Australia (FA) "strongly” condemned “the actions of a small minority" of Sydney United 58 fans, and said it has initiated disciplinary action against them.

"Football Australia is assessing all footage and images available of certain individuals which are of concern to our organisation and the broader Australian football community, including the displaying of the Hitler salute," Football Australia (FA) said in a statement.

"Football Australia is working closely with the management of CommBank Stadium and NSW Police to determine strong and swift action on any identified anti-social behaviour, which may also be deemed as illegal in the state of NSW."

On Monday, FA issued a show-cause notice to semi-professional side Sydney United 58, asking the club to respond before any sanctions are implemented.

It added it was working with New South Wales (NSW) police "to determine strong and swift action on any identified anti-social behaviour".

Meanwhile, NSW state Premier Dominic Perrottet slammed the behaviour of the supporters terming it "absolutely horrendous".

Sydney United 58 fans condemned for Nazi-style salute and song

A Wisconsin school district yesterday launched an investigation into a photo making social media rounds that shows dozens of male high school students raising their right arms in an apparent Nazi salute.

The district in the midwestern US state condemned the photo, which was taken last spring before the annual prom dance and reportedly includes all the male students in Baraboo High School’s class of 2019.

“Early this morning, a photo that was taken last spring of some Baraboo School District students who appear to be making extremely inappropriate gestures began circulating on social media,” said a statement from Baraboo superintendent Lori Mueller.

“If the gesture is what it appears to be, the district will pursue any and all available and appropriate actions, including legal, to address the issue,” Mueller said, adding that the photo was not taken on school property or at a school-sponsored event.

One student in the photo also appeared to be making the “OK” hand gesture that has come to symbolise white power.

The Baraboo Police Department said it was assisting with the investigation.

Only one student in the photo did not make a sign, and said in a statement circulated widely on social media that he was “uncomfortable” with the photo, saying that at the time “I knew what my morals were and it was not to salute something I firmly didn’t believe in.”

“It needs to stop,” said the boy, identifying himself as Jordan Blue. “Bullying. Immaturity. and just taking things as a ‘joke’...”

Baraboo, a town of about 12,000 people, is located 68km northwest of Wisconsin’s capital city Madison.

“This is why every single day we work hard to educate,” tweeted the Auschwitz Memorial of the photo.
