A satellite analysis on Wednesday (August 11) revealed that the world’s largest ice sheet has lost twice as much ice over the past 25 years as previously thought because Antarctica’s coastal glaciers are losing icebergs faster than the environment can restore the melting ice.

The study, led by scientists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and published in the journal Nature, raised new concerns about how quickly climate change is weakening Antarctica's floating ice shelves, which contribute to the rising global sea levels.

It takes thousands of years for ice shelves to form. Once formed, they act as buttresses to hold back glaciers from slipping into oceans, or else they can raise sea levels. Their size is constant as a cycle of calving and regrowth keeps them. However, in recent decades, warmer oceans have damaged the shelves from below.

The main conclusion of the study concluded that the net loss of Antarctic ice from coastal glaciers calving into the ocean is equal to the net quantity of ice that scientists already knew was being lost due to thinning caused due to melting of glaciers. The study further claimed that the thinning and calving, the total has decreased the bulk of Antarctica’s ice shelves by 12 trillion tonnes since the year 1997, twice more than anticipated, the same area as Switzerland. According to him, 88 per cent of the world’s ice could raise the sea level.

Chad Greene, JPL scientist in a press release said, "Antarctica is crumbling at its edges."

According to NASA, losses between the year 2002 to 2022 were roughly 149 million tonnes per year. The team used satellite photos to measure and record glacier flow and calving since 1997. Researchers concluded that Antarctica will reach the glacier levels pre-2000s by the end of this century.

Wakefit, a modern furniture brand that has been in the "business of sleep" for six years will now pay its employees to sleep.

The Thwaites Glacier, which is roughly the size of Florida or Britain, in West Antarctica, is at an unstoppable point now and once the "instability" begins, nothing could prevent the ice from melting, the Nasa-backed study said. Some of the low-lying areas of coastline will be drowned completely, it warned.

The melting can happen at present-day ice melting rates, the study further said.

Britain and the United States launched a $25 million project last year to study the risks of the collapse of the Thwaites Glacier. The five-year research, involving 100 scientists, is the two nations' biggest joint scientific project in Antarctica since the 1940s.

Ice is thawing from Greenland to Antarctica and man-made global warming is accelerating the trend.

Thwaites and the nearby Pine Island Glacier are two of the biggest and fastest-retreating glaciers in Antarctica.

If both abruptly collapsed, allowing ice far inland to flow faster into the oceans, world sea levels could rise by more than a metre (three feet), threatening cities from Shanghai to San Francisco and low-lying coastal regions.

Other scientists from South Korea, Germany, Sweden, New Zealand and Finland are also contributing in the project.

The United States is keeping up research even though US President Donald Trump doubts mainstream scientific findings that human activities, led by the burning of fossil fuels, are the main cause of global warming.

The Moon is steadily shrinking, causing wrinkling on its surface and quakes, according to an analysis of imagery captured by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) published Monday.

A survey of more than 12,000 images revealed that lunar basin Mare Frigoris near the Moon's north pole -- one of many vast basins long assumed to be dead sites from a geological point of view -- has been cracking and shifting.

Unlike our planet, the Moon doesn't have tectonic plates; instead, its tectonic activity occurs as it slowly loses heat from when it was formed 4.5 billion years ago.

This, in turn, causes its surface to wrinkle, similar to a grape that shrivels into a raisin.

Since the moon's crust is brittle, these forces cause its surface to break as the interior shrinks, resulting in so-called thrust faults, where one section of the crust is pushed up over an adjacent section.

As a result, the Moon has become about 150 feet (50 meters) "skinnier" over the past several hundred million years.

The Apollo astronauts first began measuring seismic activity on the Moon in the 1960s and 1970s, finding the vast majority have occurred deep in the body's interior while a smaller number were on its surface.

The analysis was published in Nature Geoscience and examined the shallow moonquakes recorded by the Apollo missions, establishing links between them and very young surface features.

"It's quite likely that the faults are still active today," said Nicholas Schmerr, an assistant professor of geology at the University of Maryland who co-authored the study.&nbsp;

"You don't often get to see active tectonics anywhere but Earth, so it's very exciting to think these faults may still be producing moonquakes."
