Next 25 years will take India-Germany strategic partnership to new heights: PM Modi

Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar Thursday (Oct 24) pitched for reforms at established global institutions to create an equitable world order. Speaking at the BRICS Summit in Russia’s Kazan, the top Indian diplomat repeated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message of peace, saying it was not an era of war.

“How do we create a more equitable global order? First, by strengthening and expanding platforms of an independent nature, and by widening the choices in different domains and minimising undue reliance on those that can be leveraged. This is really where BRICS can make a difference for the Global South," the foreign minister said.

He added that more members should be added to the UN Security Council in both the permanent and the non-permanent categories. "Second, by reforming established institutions and mechanisms, especially the UN Security Council, in the permanent and the non-permanent categories. So too the multilateral development banks, whose working procedures are just as outdated as that of the UN," S Jaishankar added.

India’s Supreme Court on Wednesday (Oct 23) scolded Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government over not doing enough to address the issue of stubble burning in northern parts of the country amid worsening air quality. Saying that the Environment Protection Act had become “toothless,” the court also blasted the state governments of Haryana and Punjab, the two major agrarian states, for not prosecuting the farmers at fault.

The bench of Justices Abhay S Oka, Ahsanuddin Amanullah and Augustine George Masih warned they would take the union government to task over the matter.

"We will take the Union of India to task... it has not created any machinery. The Environmental Protection Act has become toothless. You have got rid of punishment and replaced it with a penalty by amending Section 15, and the procedure to be followed for imposing a penalty cannot be followed," the Supreme Court said.

Responding to it, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Aishwarya Bhati, representing the centre, assured the apex court that the act will be made fully operational within 10 days and further rules will be finalised.

Referring to the Haryana and Punjab state governments, the top court said, “If these governments and you (the Centre) were seriously ready to safeguard the environment, then everything would have been done before amendment to Section 15. This is all political, nothing else."

India: PM Modi lays foundation for projects worth $725.57 million in Varanasi

Amid the ongoing diplomatic row between India and Canada, the Canadian government’s Foreign Interference Commission in a report highlighted the Indian media outlets and their massive reach in the context of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the Khalistani separatist leader who Ottawa has accused New Delhi's agents of killing.

The report stated that the Indian media, especially those outlets perceived as being aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi – highlighted several narratives that targeted Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Canada's High Commissioner to India, Canada's national security agencies, Canada's Punjabi Sikh diaspora, and Nijjar's political beliefs.

The report by the Canada's Foreign Interference Commission was published in September this year.

"The report examined websites and US-based social media platforms to surface relevant English language content to assess potential Foreign Information Manipulations and Interference (FIMI) related to India, honing in on a set of 100 accounts across Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube that are frequently described as 'Godi' media (i.e., media outlets or personalities that are perceived as mouthpieces for the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and current Indian Prime Minister Nerandra Modi)," it stated.

The media outlets backed by PM Modi are quite popular with domestic Indian audiences as well as the diaspora communities abroad.

"For example, some outlets have more than 10 million YouTube subscribers, including AajTak/lndia Today (80 million), Zee News/WION (68 million), News 18 (50.8 million), Republic (31.7 million), and Times Now (10.9 million)," the report mentioned.

While defending its stance, the report stressed that Canada's low subscriber numbers of media outlets in comparison with Indian media create a "distinct advantage" in "amplifying negative narratives" about Canada and its position on Nijjar's killing.

"It is very likely that both Canadian and global audiences who follow international news events were exposed to Modi-aligned narratives, themes, and stories on social media platforms," it added.

The report questioned the credibility of user engagement of the Indian media outlets, calling them out, and stressing that they have "little reason to believe that user views have been amplified."

"AajTak, Zee News, and Republic shared several talk-show style clips on their YouTube channels
about the PM Statement and Hardeep Singh Nijjar, receiving between 50K to IM user views per video. Regrettably, YouTube provides few public tools to verify whether user engagement is authentic or manipulated. RRM Canada, however, has little reason to believe that user views have been amplified," it added.

Narratives shared about Indian media's involvement

The report quoted Indian media agencies portraying "Canadian diplomats as haughty".

"In a popular post from ANI, High Commissioner Cameron MacKay leaves the Ministry of External Affairs building without taking questions from a reporter on the scene. Some commentators claim MacKay may have injured the journalist as he closed the embassy vehicle car door. The video received high levels of engagement (16.3K likes, shares, etc.) and was viewed over 2.1M times," the report stated.

According to the report, some of the commentators made direct pleas to Canadian parliamentarians to "eliminate alleged threats to the Indian state".

"The founder of the fringe 'The Frustrated Indian' media outlet, tagged Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre on Twitter, requesting that he neutralise the Khalistanis immediately after becoming the Prime Minister because if you don't, you won't have a country. All the best in advance," the report read.

Meanwhile, some of the claims by the Indian media, as per the report, also stated that PM Trudeau is "inventing the incident to score political gains" and "satisfying the constituents who support the Khalistan movement". The commentators claimed the incident was a "brazen local political gimmick" at the cost of "assaulting another nation's sovereignty," the report read.

Hardeep Singh Nijjar's case explained

In June 2023, Khalistani separatist leader Nijjar was shot and killed by two masked individuals outside a Gurudwara in Surrey. Later in September, Canadian PM Trudeau blamed India and said that there were "credible allegations" of a "potential link" between agents of India's government and Nijjar's murder.

However, the Indian government rejected these allegations as "absurd" and "motivated" and alleged Canada was a supporter of Khalistani "terrorists".

Further, Trudeau clarified, saying that he was not trying to "provoke" or "escalate" the conflict, adding that Canada sought cooperation with India.

Rapid Response Mechanism Canada stated that its analysts will continue to observe the information space for new developments on this topic.

What's currently happening?

Earlier this week, on Wednesday (Oct 16) while testifying before the Public Inquiry into Foreign Interference in Federal Electoral Processes and Democratic Institutions in Ottawa, Trudeau had admitted that his government did not have hard evidence against India when the allegations about New Delhi’s involvement in Nijjar's death were made.

"Canada asked India to cooperate. Their (India) ask was for proof. We asked for Indian security agencies to investigate further and cooperate with us. Because at that point what we (Canada) had was intelligence," Trudeau said.

"Their [Indian government] ask was how much do you know? Give us the evidence you have on this and our response was well...it's within your security agencies, you should be looking into how much they know. You should be engaging," the Canadian PM said.

"At that point, it was primarily intelligence and not hard evidentiary proof. So we said, let's work together and look into your security services and maybe we can get that out," he added.

Hours after Trudeau's testimony, the Indian foreign affairs ministry blasted the Canadian PM calling out his "cavalier attitude", and said, "What we have heard today only confirms what we have been saying consistently all along — Canada has presented us (India) no evidence whatsoever in support of the serious allegations that it has chosen to level against India and Indian diplomats."

"The responsibility for the damage that this cavalier behaviour has caused to India-Canada relations lies with Prime Minister Trudeau alone," the statement added.

Watch | Five Questions for India Hater Trudeau × Meanwhile, some of the claims by the Indian media, as per the report, also stated that PM Trudeau is "inventing the incident to score political gains" and "satisfying the constituents who support the Khalistan movement". The commentators claimed the incident was a "brazen local political gimmick" at the cost of "assaulting another nation's sovereignty," the report read. Hardeep Singh Nijjar's case explained In June 2023, Khalistani separatist leader Nijjar was shot and killed by two masked individuals outside a Gurudwara in Surrey. Hours after Trudeau's testimony, the Indian foreign affairs ministry blasted the Canadian PM calling out his "cavalier attitude", and said, "What we have heard today only confirms what we have been saying consistently all along — Canada has presented us (India) no evidence whatsoever in support of the serious allegations that it has chosen to level against India and Indian diplomats." "The responsibility for the damage that this cavalier behaviour has caused to India-Canada relations lies with Prime Minister Trudeau alone," the statement added.

Former UK prime minister Boris Johnson felt Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “curious astral energy” when they met for the first time in London. In his memoir, Johnson recalls how he was told in 2012 by the then UK government to avoid meeting with the then-chief minister of Gujarat state because “he was a Hindu nationalist”. Launching the scathing attack, PM Modi called Congress "irresponsible" and a "factory to spread hatred", especially against Dalits while unveiling development projects worth Rs 7,600 crore ($905 million) in the poll-bound state of Maharashtra.

BJP secured a third consecutive tenure in Haryana on Tuesday (Oct 8) despite Congress and most exit polls claiming that the saffron party was in for a rout.

“The entire ecosystem of Congress was misleading the public in Haryana. They tried to spread lies among Dalits. The Dalits realised that Congress would snatch away reservations from them and distribute them to their vote bank,” PM Modi said in a virtual address.

The BJP leader also took a swipe at the grand old party for trying to instigate the farmers to launch another round of protests.

"The Dalit community in Haryana extended record support to the BJP...Congress instigated the farmers. The farmers of Haryana are happy with the farmer-friendly schemes of the BJP. Congress also tried to instigate the youth. They all trust the BJP for a bright future. The public of Haryana has shown that they will not fall prey to the hatred conspiracies of the Congress and its urban Naxal allies," he added.

PM Modi celebrates 10 years of Swachhata campaign, hails it as most successful movement of the century

The dust is yet to settle on the heartbreaking disqualification that Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat suffered at the Paris Olympics in August. In a shocking revelation on Wednesday (Oct 2), amid the Haryana Assembly election campaign, Phogat revealed that she had refused to speak to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She also confessed that it was an indirect call from the Indian officials on terms that the conversation would be recorded.

Phogat makes shocking revelation

“The call had come (from the PM) but I refused to speak. The call did not come directly to me but Indian officials who were there informed me that he (PM Modi) wanted to talk. I was ready. However, they put conditions — no one from my team would be present, while two people from their side would record the conversation for social media,” she said in an interview with The Lallantop.

Phogat was controversially disqualified during the Paris Olympics in the 50 kg women’s category after being found overweight by 100 gm on the day of the final. The Indian wrestler had qualified for the gold medal match and would have scripted history had she won the big prize. Phogat makes shocking revelation “The call had come (from the PM) but I refused to speak. However, her disqualification on August 11 came as a big blow to the nation’s hopes as India failed to win a single gold medal.
