The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) on Monday observed a 12-hour bandh in Basirhat, West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district on Monday to register their protest against the killings of two of their party workers.

While party supporters put up a rail blockade at the Bhyabla station, it was removed after two-and-a-half hours allowing movement of the stranded trains.

The streets of Basirhat mostly bore a deserted look with buses and cars remaining off the roads. Most stores, market complexes remained closed.

BJP workers were seen asking shop keepers to keep their stores closed.

The internet services in Basirhat remained shut for the second day today.

The party observed a ‘black day’ in several parts of the state with workers sporting a black badge in a bid to register their protest against the brutal killing of the party workers.

Party MP from Hooghly constituency Locket Chatterjee led a protest march in Kolkata.

While addressing an administrative meeting at the state secretariat, Nabanna, the West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee blamed the BJP for stirring violence in the state. She asked the police to take immediate and stern action in cases of violence.&nbsp;

“The unrest in Bengal is being stirred by the BJP. Remember if there are riots in the state, Centre is equally to be blamed. The problem is, I am the most vocal leader in the country and hence they are trying to muzzle my voice. But, they cannot do that,” Banerjee said, adding, “Have asked the police to not allow hooliganism in the state and advised them to take strict action.”

On the other hand, senior BJP leader Mukul Roy demanded Mamata Banerjee’s resignation from the post of a police minister. “Police administration has completely collapsed in the state. Even TMC MLAs are complaining. Banerjee has failed in maintaining the law and order in the state, she should immediately resign from the post of the police minister,” Roy said.

On Saturday, massive clashes erupted between Trinamool Congress (TMC) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) workers in Sandeshkhali in Basirhat located in North 24 parganas district of West Bengal, claiming as many as three lives. Of these three, two are BJP workers and one is a TMC worker.

BJP leader Mukul Roy on Wednesday said that his party will obey the Election Commission's decision to cut short the campaign period in West Bengal by a day for the final phase of Lok Sabha elections.

"There is a political crisis in Bengal. EC takes special decisions when it feels the need. No violence was reported anywhere in the country during these Lok Sabha elections other than Bengal. EC took a decision that within 24 hours campaigning should be ended. We, the opposition will suffer the most. Yet, we will obey it," Roy said while addressing a press conference here.

Earlier, Deputy Election Commissioner Chandra Bhushan Kumar told media, "No election campaigning to be held in nine parliamentary constituencies of West Bengal, namely Dum Dum, Barasat, Basirhat, Jaynagar, Mathurapur, Jadavpur, Diamond Harbour, South and North Kolkata, from 10 pm tomorrow till the conclusion of polls."

Campaigning was originally scheduled to end at 5 pm on Friday for the nine constituencies that will go to polls on May 19.

Roy termed the violence at BJP president Amit Shah's roadshow 'criminal conspiracy' by West Bengal Chief Minister.

"Yesterday's incident was a criminal conspiracy by her (Mamata). The Chief Minister must answer. She said that there was no violence in Bengal. Did she forget Panchayat elections? Remember how people were stopped from casting their vote," he said.

Hitting back at Mamata's allegations that Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar's statue was vandalised during Shah's roadshow, Roy said, "Vidyasagar does not only belong to Bengal as he is an international figure. They should not drag a figure like Vidyasagar into politics."

The BJP leader also questioned whether Banerjee has permission to hold rallies."Does the Chief Minister have permission for her rallies? he asked.

Snubbing the allegations that Centre is against former Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar because the cop has evidence against him, Roy said, "If she could prove any complaints against me, I will quit politics forever," he said.
