<p>Mutaz al-Mu&#39;tri, Benghazi&#39;s security directorate spokesperson, said two bomb bags had been used in the attack at the Abu Huraira Mosque in Benghazi&rsquo;s Majuri area.</p>

<p>Friday&#39;s explosions occurred during prayers at the mosque, residents said. The devices, placed in bags at the mosque doors, appear to have been activated remotely using a mobile phone, a military source said.</p>

<p>There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Further details are awaited.</p>

<p>Two weeks ago about 35 people died in another twin bombing at a mosque in Benghazi, the second-largest city in the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>That attack, which took place outside the Bait Radwan mosque on January 23, left more than 50 others wounded, including a number of senior security officials.</p>

<p>Benghazi is controlled by the Libyan National Army (LNA), the dominant force in eastern Libya led by commander Khalifa Haftar.</p>

<p>The LNA was battling Islamists, including some linked to Islamic State and al Qaeda, as well as other opponents until late last year in the Mediterranean port city.</p>

<p>In past months there have been occasional, smaller scale bombings apparently targeting LNA allies or supporters.</p>

<p>Harun Khan, the head of the MCB, tweeted that the van had &quot;intentionally&quot; run over people leaving night prayers held during the holy month of Ramadan.</p>

<p>According to the Independent, footage of the incident showed injured people motionless on the pavement as angry crowds surrounded a white man believed to be the driver.</p>

<p>&quot;I call on everyone to stand together against those who seek to divide us,&quot; he said.</p>

<p>The Finsbury Park mosque was once a notorious hub for radical Islamists but has changed markedly in recent years under new management.</p>

<p>Its former imam, Abu Hamza, was jailed for life in New York on terrorism charges in 2015.</p>

<p>In 2015,&nbsp;the mosque was one of around 20 that took part in an open day organised by the MCB to promote better understanding of Islam after Islamist-inspired terrorist attacks in Paris.<br />
<br />
Despite the change in leadership and the focus on bolstering inter-faith relations, the mosque reported that it had received a string of threatening emails and letters in the wake of the terror attacks in Paris.</p>
