The CEO of Boeing on Tuesday (Jan 9) took responsibility for a near-catastrophic mid-air window blowout of an Alaska Airlines flight even as the aviation regulator&nbsp;of the US ordered the temporary grounding of all Boeing 737 Max 9 airplanes operating in the country.&nbsp; 
 
"We're going to approach this (by) number one acknowledging our mistake," said Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun, while interacting with employees at a safety meeting which was held after the emergency landing of Alaska Airlines' Boeing 737 Max 9&nbsp;on Friday (Jan 5).

"We're going to approach it with 100 per cent and complete transparency every step of the way," the American aviation giant's CEO said.

Calhoun, who ascended to the top position of Boeing in January 2020, expressed his commitment to work with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) which has been investigating the incident.

The NTSB is "as good as it gets," said Calhoun, as per the remarks released by the company.

"I trust every step they take, and they will get to a conclusion,” he added.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has now grounded all 737 Max 9 planes- 171 in total-&nbsp;in the US.&nbsp;

The authorities also ordered Boeing to revise guidelines regarding&nbsp;plane inspections.

In a statement, quoted by the New York Times, the agency said, “Upon receiving the revised version of instructions from Boeing, the FAA will conduct a thorough review. The safety of the flying public, not speed, will determine the timeline for returning the Boeing 737-9 Max to service."

<h2 lang="en-US">Door plug not affixed adequately: NTSB</h2>

The affected panel of the plane, which is a door plug, is used by the airlines to fill the emergency exit in planes that are not needed.

On Monday night (Jan 8), NTSB investigators suggested that the part was not adequately affixed. 
 
The FAA on Tuesday said that they were still working with Boeing for finalising detailed inspection instructions for grounded planes. 
 
"Boeing offered an initial version of instructions yesterday which they are now revising because of feedback received in response," said the FAA.

"Upon receiving the revised version of instructions from Boeing the FAA will conduct a thorough review,” it added.

Boeing said that they have been in contact with the customers and the FAA on requirements. "As part of the process, we are making updates based on their feedback and requirements," said a spokesman. 
 
Meanwhile, Alaska Airlines apologised for the inconvenience faced by the passengers in a post on X.

"We understand that travel plans have been impacted, and we are doing everything possible to minimise the disruption," posted Alaska Airlines, while reiterating that it is waiting for more direction from Boeing and the FAA.

"Until then, the fleet will remain grounded," Alaska Airlines added.

On Thursday, Ryanair airline issued an apology for the incident, calling it an “innocent mistake.” In a statement issued to the UK’s Jewish Chronicle, the airline said, “A junior crew member on this flight from Bologna to Tel Aviv (10 June) made a routine descent PA mistakenly saying ‘Palestine’ instead of ‘Tel Aviv.’ This was an innocent mistake with no intent and was immediately corrected and apologized for by the senior crew member on board.”

Eddie Wilson, the CEO of the airline, said he was “100% satisfied that this was an innocent mistake with no political overtones or intent". Wilson said that Israel was an "important partner" for Ryanair, adding that it was Israel's second-largest airline.

Britain on Friday slammed the US troop withdrawal&nbsp;from&nbsp;Afghanistan, warning the Taliban's resurgence would create a breeding ground for extremists that threatened the world.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace on Thursday announced that some 600 troops would help evacuate British nationals&nbsp;from&nbsp;the country, as the Islamists seize more control.

But he told Sky News television the US decision to withdraw troops "leaves a very big problem on the ground", handing momentum to the Taliban.

He predicted it would benefit Al-Qaeda, who were given safe haven by the Taliban before the September 11, 2001 attacks that prompted the West's 20-year involvement in&nbsp;Afghanistan.

"I'm absolutely worried that failed states are breeding grounds for those type of people," he added.

"Of course Al-Qaeda will probably come back," he said, warning that would lead to "a security threat to us and our interests."

"I felt that that was a&nbsp;mistake&nbsp;to have done it that way, that we'll all as an international community probably pay the consequences of that," Wallace said of the Doha agreement signed between the United States and the Taliban.

The agreement, signed under former US president Donald Trump last year, left Britain with no choice but to withdraw its troops, he said.

The 600 British troops being sent to&nbsp;Afghanistan&nbsp;to help with repatriation is close to the 750 Britain had in the country before the withdrawal.

They will help up to 3,000 British nationals leave, Wallace said.

The minister's critical comments about the withdrawal were among several&nbsp;from&nbsp;senior politicians and military top brass.

'Total betrayal'

The chairman of the influential Foreign Affairs Select Committee in parliament, Tom Tugendhat, told the BBC: "We've just pulled the rug&nbsp;from&nbsp;under them," referring to the Afghan people.

The Conservative MP added that Britain's need to send in more troops to facilitate its withdrawal was "a sure sign of failure".

Former international development minister Rory Stewart called the troop withdrawal "a total betrayal by the US and by the&nbsp;UK" that risked triggering a civil war between rival warlords currently defending against the Taliban.

Johnny Mercer, a Conservative MP and former veterans minister who served in&nbsp;Afghanistan, called the withdrawal "a disgrace".

"I think it's humiliating for the&nbsp;UK&nbsp;military, for the families who lost individuals over there but above all it's a huge tragedy for the people of&nbsp;Afghanistan, who've been through so much over so many years," he told Times Radio.

"We've chosen this defeat and it's shameful."

The leader of Northern Ireland's Ulster Unionist Party, Doug Beattie, served three tours in&nbsp;Afghanistan&nbsp;with the British Army, said ordinary Afghans would pay the price.

"We raised the expectations of the Afghan people that we would create something better for them," he told Irish state broadcaster RTE.

"And we're going to dash it by our inactivity... We have made strategic failures, and the latest one is to leave&nbsp;Afghanistan&nbsp;as quickly as we have and without a political settlement."
