<p>A leading conflict and armaments think tank said on Monday (April 24) that Russia's war in Ukraine drove the biggest annual increase in expenditure in Europe since the end of the Cold War three decades ago.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) said that the rise in Europe helped global military expenditures reach an eighth straight record — or 2.2 per cent of the world's gross domestic product.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by Paris-based news agency AFP, researcher Nan Tian, who is one of the study's co-authors, said: "It's driven by the war in Ukraine, (which is) driving European budget spending upwards, but also the unresolved and worsening tensions in East Asia between the US and China."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The boost in military expenditures can be seen in the aftermath of countries rushing to bolster their defences after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, which began in February last year following years of growing tensions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by Reuters, SIPRI Senior Researcher Diego Lopes da Silva said: "This included multi-year plans to boost spending from several governments. As a result, we can reasonably expect military expenditure in Central and Western Europe to keep rising in the years ahead."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Military&nbsp;expenditure worldwide rose to nearly $2 trillion in 2020, defying the economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, researchers said on Monday.</p>

<p>Global&nbsp;military&nbsp;spending increased by 2.6 per cent to $1,981 billion (about 1,650 bn euros) in 2020, when global GDP shrank 4.4 per cent, according to a report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI).</p>

<p>Diego Lopes da Silva, one of report's authors, said&nbsp;the development was unexpected.</p>

<p>"Because of the pandemic, one would think&nbsp;military&nbsp;spending would decrease," he said. "But it's possible to conclude with some certainty that Covid-19 did not have a significant impact on global&nbsp;military&nbsp;spending, in 2020 at least."</p>

<p>He cautioned however that due to the nature of&nbsp;military&nbsp;spending, it could take time for countries "to adapt to the shock".</p>

<p>The fact that&nbsp;military&nbsp;spending continued to increase in a year with an economic downturn meant the "military&nbsp;burden", or the share of&nbsp;military&nbsp;spending out of total GDP, had increased as well.</p>

<p>The overall share rose from 2.2 per cent to 2.4 per cent, the largest year-on-year increase since the financial crisis of 2009.</p>

<p>As a result, more NATO members hit the Alliance's guideline target of spending at least two percent of GDP on their&nbsp;military, with 12 countries doing so in 2020 compared to nine in 2019.</p>

<p>There were however indications the pandemic had affected some countries.</p>

<p>Nations such as Chile and South Korea openly decided to reappropriate&nbsp;military&nbsp;funds in response to the pandemic.</p>

<p>"Other countries, such as Brazil and Russia, did not explicitly say this was reallocated because of the pandemic, but they have spent considerably less than their original budget for 2020," Lopes da Silva said.</p>

<p>Another response, as in Hungary for example, was to increase&nbsp;military&nbsp;spending "as part of a stimulus package in response to the pandemic".</p>

<p>Lopes da Silva noted many countries responded to the 2008-2009 economic crisis by adopting austerity measures, but "this time around it might not be the case".</p>

<p>The&nbsp;world's two biggest spenders by far were the US and China, with Washington accounting for 39 percent of overall expenditure and Beijing for 13 per cent.</p>

<p>China's&nbsp;military&nbsp;spending has risen in tandem with its growing economy and has seen an increase for 26 consecutive years, reaching an estimated $252 bn in 2020.</p>

<p>The US also increased its spending for the third year in a row in 2020, after seven years of reductions.</p>

<p>"This reflects growing concerns over perceived threats from strategic competitors such as China and Russia, as well as the Trump administration's drive to bolster what it saw as a depleted US&nbsp;military," Alexandra Marksteiner, another author of the report, said in a statement.</p>

<p>Lopes da Silva however noted that the new "Biden administration has not given any indications that it will reduce&nbsp;military&nbsp;spending."</p>

<p>The report found a sharp drop in Russia's military expenditure that dropped by 20 per cent from 2016 to stand at $ 66.3 billion.Overall, the global military expenditure showed a rising trend as a marginal increase of 1.1 per cent in real terms from 2016, resulted in $ 1739 billion expenditure in 2017.</p>

India among top 5 military spenders: Report

<p>Even as ceasefire violations continued along the Line of Control, Pakistan on Friday said its establishment is committed to maintaining peace, security and stability in the region.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During a debate on conventional weapons at the United Nations General Assembly&#39;s Disarmament and International Security Committee on Thursday, Pakistan envoy said, &quot;It (Pakistan) neither wants, nor is it engaged in an arms race in the region,&quot; according to reports in a Pakistani publication, Dawn. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Hinting at India, Pakistan&#39;s permanent representative to the UN, ambassador Tehmina Janjua said Islamabad is concerned over the growing transfer of conventional armaments in volatile regions. &ldquo;South Asia is a sensitive region where one state&#39;s military spending grossly and vastly out shadows all others,&rdquo; pointing to India&#39;s defence spending. India set aside $51 billion last year for its defence budget, while Pakistan itself spends $8 billion to $10 billion a year on its military. &nbsp;</p>

<p>India has repeatedly urged international action against the threat of terrorism, describing its neighbour Pakistan as the &quot;hotbed of terrorism&quot;. The Indian Army had conducted surgical strikes on terror launch pads in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, which was believed to be in retaliation to the Uri attack on the army carried out by Pakistan-based terror outfit Jaish-e-Mohammad.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Despite the growing tensions along the border, Islamabad said it is focused on the crucial conventional force balance that has the potential of fuelling instability and jeopardising the delicate regional balance.</p>

<p>Janjua said military expenditures have been rapidly growing and more money was being spent on fuelling and exacerbating conflicts than on preventing them, Dawn reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Urging development of legislative, regulatory, enforcement and institutional mechanisms to address the issue, the ambassador said efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons must not give way to an unworkable imbalance of conventional weapons similar to those that had triggered two world wars.</p>

<p>The envoy told that Pakistan is reviewing its arms trade treaty to regulate trade and transfer of conventional weapons and note its entry into force. Janjua said Pakistan shared the concerns about the acquisition and use of small arms and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) by non-state actors and terrorists.&nbsp;</p>

Urging development of legislative, regulatory, enforcement and institutional mechanisms to address the issue, the ambassador said efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons must not give way to an unworkable imbalance of conventional weapons similar to those that had triggered two world wars. The envoy told that Pakistan is reviewing its arms trade treaty to regulate trade and transfer of conventional weapons and note its entry into force. Janjua said Pakistan shared the concerns about the acquisition and use of small arms and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) by non-state actors and terrorists. (WION)
