In India, the electric vehicle market is experiencing a period of strategic manoeuvring as top manufacturers employ various tactics to stimulate sales and overcome market challenges. This shift comes as the EV sector, which has seen rapid growth to capture 2 per cent of India's annual car sales of 4.2 million units, faces a slowdown in sales momentum.

Tata Motors, India's leading EV manufacturer, has taken aggressive steps to attract consumers. The company is offering significant incentives, including free charging at 5,500 stations operated by its power unit for six months.

Tata has implemented substantial price reductions ranging from 10 per cent to 20 per cent on its popular Punch and Nexon models. These price cuts are particularly noteworthy as they bring the cost of the best-selling Nexon EV to approximately USD 15,000, making it comparable in price to its gasoline and diesel counterparts. Tata Motors has framed these initiatives as a "step towards mainstreaming EVs and accelerating EV adoption."

Meanwhile, MG Motor, a joint venture between India's JSW Group and China's SAIC, has introduced an innovative approach to EV ownership. The company has launched the world's first "Battery-as-a-Service" plan for its new EV model. This service allows customers to rent the battery, typically one of the most expensive components of an electric vehicle, rather than purchasing it outright. The plan is designed to make EVs more affordable by reducing the initial acquisition cost. Under this scheme, customers pay for battery usage at a rate of INR 3.5(4 U.S. cents) per kilometre, with a monthly minimum requirement of 1,500 kilometres (932 miles).

Satinder Singh Bajwa, chief commercial officer of MG Motor, emphasised the affordability aspect of this approach, saying, "You are paying for the usage of the battery as you pay for the fuel." This strategy aims to address one of the primary barriers to EV adoption in India – the high upfront cost of electric vehicles compared to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.

The need for such innovative strategies is underscored by recent sales figures. Tata Motors, for instance, sold only 4,086 EVs in August, marking a nearly 15 per cent decline compared to the same period last year. This represents the fourth consecutive month of year-on-year decline in EV sales for the company in India's auto market, which is the third-largest globally.

These efforts by manufacturers come against a backdrop of challenges facing the Indian EV market. Despite the government's push to promote clean vehicles, the widespread adoption of electric cars has been hampered by factors such as high prices and a lack of charging infrastructure. While e-scooters have seen significant uptake, particularly driven by demand from e-commerce companies, annual sales of electric cars in India remain below 100,000 units.

The preference for gasoline and diesel vehicles among Indian consumers persists, largely due to the scarcity of charging stations across the country. This infrastructure gap continues to be a significant hurdle for EV adoption on a larger scale.

Despite these challenges, various international and domestic automakers continue to enter the Indian EV market. Companies such as BYD, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz have launched their electric models, often targeting the growing segment of affluent Indian consumers.

MG Motor's latest offering, the Windsor EV, exemplifies the efforts to appeal to a broader range of buyers. Priced at INR 999,000 (USD 11,900), the vehicle comes with attractive features including a panoramic glass roof, reclining rear seats, six airbags, and complimentary charging at numerous stations for the first year.

These developments in the Indian EV market reflect the industry's recognition of the need to address key barriers to adoption, particularly cost and infrastructure concerns. As manufacturers continue to innovate and offer more attractive propositions to consumers, the evolution of India's EV landscape will be closely watched by industry observers and policymakers alike.

Tata and MG's free charging strategy set to attract EV buyers

In August, sales of passenger vehicles in the Indian market experienced a decline for the second consecutive month, attributed to a high comparative base and car manufacturers reducing dispatches to better manage inventory levels at dealerships. Industry estimates indicate that approximately 350,000 to 355,000 cars, including sedans and utility vehicles, were dispatched from factories to dealerships last month. This represents a decrease of around 1.7 per cent to 3 per cent compared to the 361,123 vehicles sold in August 2023. It's important to note that automakers in India typically report wholesale dispatch figures rather than retail sales to end customers.

Despite this downturn, car manufacturers remain optimistic about robust demand in the upcoming festive season, particularly with Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in Maharashtra starting on September 7 and Onam festivities in Kerala from September 16. Market leader Maruti Suzuki reported an 8.4 per cent drop in sales, totaling 143,075 units. Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer for Marketing and Sales at Maruti Suzuki, explained, “We calibrated our dispatches with market demand to bring down stocks at dealerships. Our inventory in the channel has now decreased to 36 days from 38 days previously. We aim to maintain this level because reducing stocks further could affect vehicle availability and result in lost sales during the festive season”.

Banerjee also noted a positive response to their vehicles in Kerala, particularly since the onset of the Chingham month on August 17, with bookings increasing by 7 per cent in the state. He expressed optimism for retail sales to rise during Onam, stating, “Overall, our wholesale has aligned with retail sales in August, which is a good sign.” Currently, Maruti Suzuki has an order bank of 165,000 vehicles.

In August, SUVs accounted for a significant 55 per cent of total passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market. Hyundai, too, reported that SUVs, particularly models like the CRETA, VENUE, and EXTER, remain key growth drivers, contributing 66.8 per cent to domestic sales. Tarun Garg, Whole-time Director and Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai, mentioned the upcoming launch of the new 6 and 7-seater SUV, Hyundai ALCAZAR, expressing confidence in a strong response during the festive season. However, Hyundai's local sales fell by 8 per cent to 49,525 units last month. Tata Motors, another leading domestic automaker, also saw a decline of 3 per cent, selling 44,142 units in August.

Conversely, some manufacturers like Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), Kia, and MG Motor India reported growth in their sales last month, driven by increased demand for their utility vehicles. Toyota's sales surged by 36.5 per cent to 28,589 units, while Kia experienced a 17.2 per cent rise, selling 22,523 units. MG Motor India sold 4,571 units, with over a third of these sales attributed to electric vehicles.

Sabari Manohar, Vice President of Sales, Service, and Used Car Business at TKM, noted, “As we approach the festive season, demand for our products remains buoyant, and we are already witnessing increased consumer interest and footfall across all our dealerships. SUVs and MPVs continue to significantly contribute to our sales numbers, reflecting a growing preference for these segments, even in tier 2 and tier 3 markets”.

Hardeep Singh Brar, Senior Vice President and National Head of Sales & Marketing at Kia, highlighted the company’s focus on optimizing its product offerings to meet evolving customer needs, stating, “Kia India is committed to offering vehicles that resonate well with our customers' preferences and aspirations while continuously expanding our presence in the country”.

In the two-wheeler segment, TVS Motor Company reported a 13 per cent increase in sales, reaching 289,063 units, attributed to a resurgence in consumer demand across both rural and urban markets. However, the commercial vehicle sector saw subdued sales, with Tata Motors reporting a 16 per cent decline, selling 25,864 units in August.

Auto sales decline in August for second consecutive month

Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM) and JSW-MG Motor India, the two leading manufacturers in India's emerging passenger electric vehicle market, have launched significant initiatives to tackle one of the primary obstacles to widespread EV adoption: charging infrastructure.

On Tuesday, both companies unveiled strategies aimed at alleviating the charging concerns that have long been a major drawback of EV ownership.

TPEM has announced a collaborative effort with Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd (TPREL) to offer a comprehensive package that combines electric vehicles with solar rooftop systems. This integrated approach aims to provide a holistic solution for potential EV owners, addressing both their transportation and energy needs simultaneously.

Meanwhile, MG Motor India has introduced its E-Hub platform, designed to streamline the EV charging experience. The E-Hub aims to simplify the often complex process of finding, booking, and paying for charging stations, making it more user-friendly for EV owners to keep their vehicles powered up.

Delving deeper into TPEM's initiative, the collaboration with Tata Power Renewable Energy will enable customers to have a solar rooftop system installed through TPREL when they purchase an electric vehicle. This synergy between EV technology and renewable energy infrastructure represents a significant step towards creating a more sustainable and integrated approach to personal transportation.

Both TPEM and TPREL have committed to promoting EVs, EV charging solutions, and solar rooftop systems to their respective customer bases. This coordinated effort is intended to raise awareness about the benefits of adopting both electric vehicles and solar power technologies.

The companies emphasise that both EVs and solar power systems produce zero tailpipe emissions, aligning with global efforts to reduce carbon footprints and combat climate change. This combined package offers several economic advantages to consumers. It is expected to reduce the total cost of ownership for EVs, lower electricity bills for EV owners, and accelerate the return on investment for those who install solar rooftop systems and subsequently purchase an EV.

By providing 100 per cent emission-free power for electric vehicles, this initiative represents a significant step towards creating a truly sustainable transportation ecosystem. It addresses not only the immediate concerns of EV charging but also contributes to the broader goal of transitioning to cleaner, more renewable energy sources.

These efforts by TPEM and JSW-MG Motor India highlight the evolving landscape of the EV industry in India, where manufacturers are increasingly looking beyond just vehicle production to create comprehensive ecosystems that support and encourage EV adoption. By addressing the charging infrastructure challenge head-on, these companies are working to remove one of the most significant barriers to widespread EV acceptance, potentially accelerating the transition to electric mobility in the world's fifth-largest auto market.
