Tech Mahindra, Infosys, Wipro, Mahindra &amp; Mahindra, Bajaj Finance, and Maruti Suzuki India were the major laggards. Financial equities fell sharply in the final hour of trade, greatly adding to the market's collapse. The Nifty Bank Index fell by 22 points to settle at 49,781. On the other side, the Midcap Index climbed 41 points to close at 53,236, slightly exceeding the benchmarks.<o:p></o:p>

IT companies were among the worst performers, with the sector index plunging 2 per cent as robust job statistics lowered prospects for rate cuts. Mphasis' stock fell 3 per cent after block trades involving up to 15 per cent of company ownership.<o:p></o:p>

On the positive side, most life insurance companies reported excellent business updates in May, causing their stock prices to jump by 1-3 per cent. Cement equities remained popular among investors amid expectations of a government push in the housing sector. Samvardhana Motherson increased its winning streak by 5 per cent for the day. Fertilizer stocks also rose when the Prime Minister released the latest instalment of the Kisan Samman Nidhi. GAIL's shares fell 5 per cent from their highs following a ₹60,000 crore ($7.23 billion) investment in an ethane cracker project.<o:p></o:p>

Sensex and Nifty retreat from record highs amid market volatility

Sell-off continued in the Indian stock markets as the BSE Sensex fell over 3,500 points after trade resumed on the exchanges after a 45-minute halt.

The Nifty on the National Stock Exchange also lost over 1,000 points to trade below the 8,000 mark.

At 11.05 a.m., Sensex was trading at 26,409, lower by 3,507 points from the previous close of 29,915.96.

It had opened at 27,608.80 and has so far touched a high of 27,900.83 and a low of 26,391 points.

Sensex falls 3,500 points as trade resumes;  Nifty loses over 1,000 points

Equity benchmark indices were in the positive zone during early hours on Friday in line with global cues while investors remain cautious ahead of the first fiscal quarter GDP data.

At 10:50 am, the BSE S&amp;P Sensex was up by 9 points at 37,060.26 while the Nifty 50 edged higher by 4.20 points to 10,952.65.

At the National Stock Exchange, all sectoral indices were up except for Nifty IT.&nbsp;

The metal gained by 2.36 per cent, PSU bank by 1.08 per cent and realty by nearly 1 per cent. Nifty IT slipped by 0.6 per cent.

Among stocks, metal stocks showed handsome gains with Hindalco up by 3.8 per cent, Tata Steel by 3.1 per cent, Vedanta by 2.6 per cent and JSW Steel by 2.2 per cent.

The other prominent gainers included GAIL, ONGC, ITC, Britannia, Tata Motors and Bajaj Finserv.

However, IT stocks like Tech Mahindra, HCL Tech, Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys witnessed marginal declines.

Meanwhile, Asian shares jumped to a one-week high following strong gains on the Wall Street overnight amid signs that China is open to a resolution of its trade war with the United States. Investors also hoped that central banks and governments will do more to avert a global growth slowdown.

The MSCI's broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan was up by 1 per cent. Japan's Nikkei jumped 1.2 per cent while South Korea's KOSPI index gained 1.7 per cent.

The 50-share Nifty also fell 28.65 points, or 0.26%, to 10,806.65. Intra-day, it moved between 10,939.70 and 10,751.20.

The rupee depreciated 25 paise to 71.32 after touching a low of 71.49 against the dollar (intra-day), also hitting trading sentiments.

Fears that foreign institutional investors (FIIs), who have been pumping sizeable funds into the Indian bourses in the past few sessions, may slow down their activity, too cast a shadow over domestic equities, experts said.

Pakistan on Wednesday claimed that it shot down two Indian military aircraft over Pakistani air space and arrested one of the pilots.

Later in the day, India’s External Affairs Ministry said Pakistan has used its Air Force to target military installations in India in response to Indian counter-terrorism operations but their attempts were foiled successfully through one Indian pilot is “missing in action”.

The move came after the Indian Air Force on Tuesday struck Jaish-e-Mohammed’s (JeM) biggest camp in Pakistan in a major “preemptive” action, killing a large number of terrorists and trainers of the Pak-based terror group preparing to carry out suicide attacks in India.

Domestic institutional investors sold equities to the tune of ₹720.27 crore, while Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth a net ₹1,674.17 crore, provisional data showed.
