For the '13 Days to Halloween' series, I collect, watch, and write about 13 brilliant and spooky 'underseen' movies that more people need to see. <h2>'Let the Right One In'</h2>

You have probably seen the Hollywood remake of Swedish feature 'Let the Right One In'. Directed by Matt Reeves, it is called 'Let Me In', and it is quite good, and mostly captures the atmosphere and tone of the Swedish film. But it is still not a patch on Tomas Alfredson's original. The story, based on a novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist, follows a troubled and bullied 12-year-old boy called Oskar Eriksson (Kåre Hedebrant) who befriends and falls in love with a young girl called Eli (Lina Leandersson) who is actually a 200-year old vampire.&nbsp;

Despite the bloody premise and one of the two main characters subsisting solely on human blood, 'Let the Right One In' is rather a sweet film, touching on themes of friendship, otherism, and belonging.&nbsp;

The film is a bloody, thrill ride that never lets up.&nbsp;

Despite the insistent warnings of of Samuel L Jackson's manager Gerald, he stays in that very room, believing himself to be a sceptical buster of myths believed by the masses. And there, he encounters things that change his complete outlook -- if he did come out alive, that is.&nbsp;

13 Days to Halloween: 'Let the Right One In' is not your typical vampire film

A trailer for the upcoming Showtime series 'Let The Right One In' is here. The show is an adaptation of the 2004 novel of the same name by John Ajvide Lindqvist, which inspired a 2008 Swedish film and an American remake in 2010. The story follows a being called Eli who appears as a 12-year-old girl but is actually a 200-year-old vampire. She lives with an adult companion who also provides her with food -- luring unsuspecting victims for&nbsp;her and disposing of them&nbsp;when Eli has had her fill.&nbsp;

Eli befriends a troubled young boy and builds a strong friendship with him. Both are rejects from society for different reasons and bond with each other. The Swedish and American remakes are quite different from each other both in terms of setting and themes. The remake was directed by Matt Reeves and was received with positive reviews, though some lamented that it diluted many of the novel's and original film's themes.

We do not know if its plot will significantly divert from the book or not, but in terms of the essence at least it is just right -- judging by the trailer.&nbsp;

The official synopsis says that the story will not feature a 200-year-old vampire, but rather a young girl who was turned a decade ago, and her companion is actually her real father, not the pretend one.

This puts a nice twist into the story, but it perhaps may lessen the impact of the story when the revelation of Eli's gender comes. However, the series format may allow the story to breathe more and explore aspects of the novel the two films could not.

An unusual Scandinavian movie about a relationship between two outsiders that Variety said was "destined to be a cult classic", won the Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes on Friday.

Directed by Iranian-born Ali Abbasi and co-written by John Ajvide Lindqvist, the author of Swedish vampire movie "Let the Right One In", "Border" entertained and baffled audiences at the festival which closes on Saturday.

It is the story of Tina, a strange-looking Swedish customs officer who finds herself drawn to a similarly odd man, Vore, and discovers an uncomfortable truth about her own identity.

Variety critic Alissa Simon called it an "exciting, intelligent mix of romance, Nordic noir, social realism and supernatural horror that defies and subverts genre conventions".

Lead actress Eva Melander said: "It’s a very unpredictable story and people watching it are really touched by it. They go out from the cinema and they kind of forget their mobile phone and wonder: 'What’s this and what did I just see?'".

Un Certain Regard is the second-tier competition at Cannes, which closes on Saturday with the award of the Palme d`Or and other prizes for the films in the main selection.

Among the other Un, Certain Regard winners were Belgian actor Victor Polster, who won Best Performance for his role as a transgender teenage girl`s quest to become a professional ballerina in "Girl".
