<h2><strong>Leprosy an 'endemic' in south-eastern United States</strong></h2>

<p>The US CDC said that the data adds up to the "mounting epidemiological evidence supporting Leprosy as an endemic in the south-eastern United States".</p>

<p>Overall, the number of reported Leprosy cases fell in the United States between 2019 and 2020.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The increase in central Florida, however, emerges as the latest cause for concern.</p>

<p>"Travel to this area, even in the absence of other risk factors, should prompt consideration of Leprosy in the appropriate clinical context," the CDC said.</p>

<h2><strong>How dangerous is Leprosy?</strong></h2>

<p>Leprosy can lead to serious disabilities, including nervous damage, if not treated in time. It spreads through moisture droplets passed through the breathable air. Armadillos are known to be the carriers of the disease.</p>

<p>The CDC cited the case of a 54-year-old man from central Florida. The man had not traveled domestically or internationally, had not had "prolonged contact with immigrants from Leprosy-endemic countries", and had denied exposure to armadillos, which are known to carry the disease.</p>

<p>"The absence of traditional risk factors in many recent cases of Leprosy in Florida, coupled with the high proportion of residents, like our patient, who spend a great deal of time outdoors, supports the investigation into environmental reservoirs as a potential source of transmission," the CDC said.</p>

<p>With over two lakh new cases of leprosy reported each year on an average globally, WHO has lauded the launch of a global partnership to stop leprosy, saying stronger force with a common vision was needed for speeding up efforts to end the disease.</p>

<p>The Global Partnership to Stop Leprosy was launched by a host of organisations with the support of the global health body.</p>

<p>The new partnership launched ahead of World Leprosy Day, 2018, brings together leading agencies and organisations working towards achieving zero leprosy in various parts of the world.</p>

<p>Advocating for enhancing efforts against leprosy, World Leprosy Day is observed every year on the last Sunday of January. This year, the day focuses on the critical target of zero leprosy-related disabilities in children by 2020.</p>

<p>&quot;A collaborative approach by leading partners to address the remaining challenges with innovative solutions, is expected to provide renewed energy and impetus to accelerate efforts against leprosy,&quot; said Regional Director for WHO South-East Asia Dr Poonam Khetrapal Singh, who also WHO&#39;s Global Leprosy Programme.</p>

<p>&quot;This is a turning point, we must harness this energy to free the world of leprosy forever,&quot; she said.</p>

<p>The partnership aims at supporting roll-out of global policy options, scale up interventions and mainstream leprosy under the aegis of universal health coverage.</p>

<p>The Global Partnership to Stop Leprosy is also expected to enhance implementation of WHO&#39;s Global Leprosy Strategy 2016-2020 &quot;accelerating towards a leprosy-free world&quot;, which focuses on stronger political ownership, enhanced disease control and eliminating stigma and discrimination.</p>

<p>Globally, elimination of leprosy as a public health problem was achieved in the year 2000 with its prevalence reduced to less than one case per 10,000 population, each year on an average, more than 2,00,000 new cases are reported.</p>

He came forward for treatment years ago thinking that once he is cured, the way he had been treated will eventually change. &nbsp;&nbsp;<br />

&quot;I got it treated. After treatment leprosy was cured. When I returned home I was treated even more badly because of the physical deformity visible in my hands and legs.&quot; he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to India&rsquo;s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, cases of permanent disabilities due to leprosy have been on the rise over the past decade.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&nbsp;While in 2007&ndash;08, 3,477 cases of disability were recorded, that number has risen to 5,857 in the past year which is a growth of nearly 68 per cent.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After a long battle the first big victory for legal activists came in May this year when the 1898 Lepers Act of India, brought in during the British rule, was repealed. But there are many other laws that have been framed on the basis of this act and those still remain.&nbsp;<br />

Nikita Sarah, head of advocacy and communication of The Leprosy Mission Trust India said efforts are needed to make these necessary legal changes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&quot;For people affected by leprosy there are about 16 discriminatory laws, with provisions within it, they are very discriminatory. The Indian Divorce Act, The Hindu Marriage Act, The Christian Marriage Act, most of these laws have discriminatory provisions it. If your spouse has leprosy it gives you grounds for a divorce.&quot; &nbsp;she said. &nbsp;<br />
&nbsp;<br />
The law Commission of India in 2005 proposed a draft bill for eliminating discrimination against persons affected by leprosy. The bill seeks to repeal discriminatory provisions in all existing laws. &nbsp;</p>

<p>While activists are hoping that the Indian government will take it forward, many people affected by leprosy like Ram Babu has been waiting for a better day.</p>
