WION Traveller S2 Episode 17 – Udaipur: Tales by the lake

Brazil's first lady Marcela Temer leapt fully clothed into a lake at the presidential palace to rescue her pet dog -- then got roasted on social media.

The 34-year-old former beauty queen jumped into the lake after her Jack Russell named Picoly went after some ducks but struggled to get back out.

Although the drama occurred on April 22, it only became public this week.

Brazilian media and Twitter wits mocked the first lady's heroics, making the incident a top trending topic late Monday.

Given that her husband Michel Temer is the most unpopular president on record in Brazilian history, leftist blogger Leonardo Stoppa joked that Marcela's aim was not to save the dog but the duck.

"She despaired, because she saw one of Temer's few voters," he said in a YouTube broadcast.

Michel Temer, who is more than four decades older than his wife and embroiled in multiple corruption investigations, took another hit from blogger Jose Simao, who tweeted: "Marcela's dog tried to commit suicide! It couldn't put up with Temer!"

Referencing comparisons between Temer and vampires -- a jibe that took centre stage at this year's Rio carnival -- one tweeter said he wasn't surprised Marcela cared so much about animals.

"It's obvious," he wrote. "Because she married a BAT."

Bengaluru's 1,000-acre Bellandur Lake, which caught fire on Friday, is now under cooling operations after 5,000 army personnel and fire-fighting equipments were deployed to bring the fire that raged for seven hours, under control.

Bellandur Lake, the biggest water body of the city, which is full of pollution and toxic foam, could be seen with massive plumes of smoke billowing over it even from a distance.

The fire started at one spot on Friday evening but spread in two other places again. A jet fighter was appointed to curb the fire.

According to media reports, residents living on the Yemlur side of Bellandur spotted smoke in the lake known to be full of sewage, chemical effluents and construction debris around noon on Friday. Shortly thereafter, flames started rising.

Fire department officials are reportedly making concerted efforts to bring the fire under control under the supervision of Karnataka Lake Conservation and Development Authority (KLCDA) officials.

The cause of the fire is being attributed to locals burning the grassy land near the lake to get a fresh crop to feed their cattle.

Some areas located away from the waterbody are still burning.

The Aral Sea, once the fourth largest lake in the world, has shrunk to less than 10 per cent in size over the years, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) says.

Nestled between the countries Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan, the lake has receded drastically turning the eastern basin of the lake into a desert, called the Aralkum Desert.

In a timelapse video, NASA has captured the lake’s disappearance spanning from the year 2000 to 2016.

A 16-year old trajectory shows how the lake went from being a healthy waterbody to a victim of human interference. It started with the Soviet Union intervention that redirected the lake's tributaries to irrigate the nearby desert. As the desert bloomed, Aral Sea suffered severe damage that led to its waterline receding over the years.

The communities living by the lake lost their livelihood and had to eventually move out. The water body saw further damage when the Kazakhstan government built a dam between northern and southern part of the lake, leaving it irreparable.
