NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg on Monday (June 17) said that Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit this week to North Korea, which has supplied shells to Moscow despite being under UN sanctions, points out that Russia is "dependent" on authoritarian leaders for weapons supply.

Additionally, Stoltenberg&nbsp;called on Beijing to face consequences if it continues to support Moscow amid the war in Ukraine. The NATO Secretary-General accused China of worsening the conflict between Russia and Ukraine through an alleged export push to rebuild Russia's defence industry.

President Xi Jinping "has tried to create the impression that he is taking a back seat in this conflict, to avoid sanctions and keep trade flowing," Stoltenberg said.

"But the reality is that China is fueling the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II, and at the same time, it wants to maintain good relations with the West," he said.

"Beijing cannot have it both ways. At some point — and unless China changes course — allies need to impose a cost. There should be consequences," Stoltenberg added.

China says that it is not sending lethal assistance to either Russia or Ukraine which the United States and other Western nations are purportedly doing.

The missiles reportedly travelled a distance of around 300 kilometres (186 miles), said the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

He added that the military had "strengthened vigilance and surveillance in preparation for additional launches".

The launches also come just hours after Kim Jong Un's influential sister Kim Yo Jong denounced the US and South Korea over their repeated accusations, claiming that the nuclear-armed Pyongyang was sending its weapons to Russia for use in its offensive against Ukraine.

She alleged that Seoul and Washington were "misleading the public opinion" with their claims.

This came after North Korea's foreign ministry condemned what it described as an increased surveillance of North Korea by US allies under the pretence of monitoring the UN sanctions violations.&nbsp;

"The Democratic People's Republic Of Korea (DPRK) will take necessary measures to firmly defend the sovereignty and security of the state on the basis of a rigorous analysis of the negative influence being caused by the grave acts of some countries including UK, Canada, Germany, France, New Zealand and Australia taking part in the so-called 'activities of monitoring sanctions against DPRK,'" said North Korea's foreign ministry in a statement.

"This violent threat seeks to frighten the farmer from his field, children from their schools, women from the marketplace and families from their very homes. We must therefore fight this threat together, combining determined national effort with well-tailored and regional and international collaboration."

Tinubu is also the chair of the West African regional bloc ECOWAS. He&nbsp;urged the proper establishment&nbsp;of a regional standby military force. This force, initially proposed in response to the July 2023 coup in Niger, would act as a deterrent against acts of violence by&nbsp;terrorists in the region, he said.

According to a new study by the African Center for Strategic Studies, more than 23,000 people were killed in Africa last year — a 20 per cent increase compared to 2022.

In a message carried out by North Korean state media, Kim Yo Jong said that a potential improvement in Pyongyang-Tokyo ties would depend on Japan's will to make "a practical political decision", a purported reference to the&nbsp;issue of Japanese nationals abducted by Pyongyang decades ago.

Prime Minister Kishida said that this was nothing new.

"As I have said in the past, I have been making various direct approaches to North Korea, believing that top-level talks are important to resolving issues such as the abduction problem," Kishida told an Upper House committee minutes after the report was released, Japan Times reported.&nbsp;

But Tokyo firmly rejected the assertion that the abduction issue had been resolved, labeling it as "totally unacceptable."

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un took his first ride in the&nbsp;Russian-made high-end luxury car that was gifted by President Vladimir Putin, said Kim’s sister, on Saturday (Mar 16) as she hailed the deepening bilateral ties between Moscow and Pyongyang.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Clear proof’</h2>

In February, Putin gifted a high-end Aurus Senat limousine made in Russia, which he had shown the North Korean leader when they met for a summit back in September. It was the first meeting between the two leaders in four years.&nbsp;

The gift has violated multiple United Nations sanctions imposed on North Korea over its nuclear and other weapons programmes by their leader. As a part of the sanctions, which were passed years ago with Russia’s approval, the import of any luxury goods or vehicles is banned into the country.

Kim used the limousine for the first time during an open event on Friday (Mar 15), said his sister and prominent government official Kim Yo Jong, according to a statement carried by the North Korean state media.&nbsp;

“The special function of the private car is perfect and can be thoroughly trusted,” said Kim Yo Jong, as quoted by the KCNA, without specifying any particular function of the vehicle that she was referring to.&nbsp;

Kim’s ride in the Russian vehicle is “clear proof of the DPRK-Russia friendship, which is developing in a comprehensive way on a new high stage,” the North Korean leader’s sister added using the country’s official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).&nbsp;

Aurus was the first Russian luxury car brand, according to Russian media reports, and has been used in motorcades of top officials since Putin first used the vehicle during his inauguration ceremony in 2018.

The North Korean leader also reportedly attended the opening ceremony of a greenhouse farm on Friday.&nbsp;
