Pyongyang, North Korea
North Korea on Thursday lashed out at "reckless provocation" by the United States and its allies for criticising Pyongyang's support for Russia's war in Ukraine, including the deployment of troops.
In a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency, a foreign ministry spokesman said the 10 nations and the European Union (EU) were "distorting and slandering" Pyongyang's "normal cooperative" ties with Moscow.
Pyongyang has sent thousands of troops to reinforce Russia's war effort, including to the Kursk border region, where Ukrainian forces seized territory earlier this year.

On Monday, those nations and the EU said North Korea's growing involvement in the war in Ukraine in support of Russia constituted a "dangerous expansion of the conflict, with serious consequences for European and Indo-Pacific security".
The foreign ministers of Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, the United States and the high representative of the European Union signed the statement, released by Washington.
"We urge the DPRK to cease immediately all assistance for Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, including by withdrawing its troops", the statement said.

But Pyongyang's foreign ministry fired back, with the spokesman offering its "serious concern and protest, denouncing and rejecting in the strongest terms the reckless provocation of the US and its vassal forces".
North Korea said the "madness" of the response by "hostile forces" indicated that the increased cooperation between Pyongyang and Moscow was effectively "deterring the US and the West's ill-intended extension of influence".
It did not specifically mention its troop deployment alongside Russian forces, only saying the war in Ukraine "has been prolonged" by what it called the "adventuristic military policy and policy of exclusive alliance" of Washington and its allies.
North Korea "will firmly safeguard its legitimate right as a sovereign state, put no restrictions on exercising it and continue to make crucial efforts to preserve regional and global peace and security", the statement carried by KCNA said.

North Korea slams US-led criticism over alleged support for Russia, says 'reckless provocation'

North Korean leader - Kim Jong Un has ordered the mass production of suicide drones. Why is North Korea ramping up the production of "Suicide drones"?

Kim Jong Un Orders Mass Production of Suicide Drones

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ordered the test and "mass production" of suicide drones claiming that the introduction of such drones around the world requires an urgent update of military theory, state media outlet Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said.

The agency released still photographs showing Kim with the drones and quoted him saying that the competition to use such suicide drones is increasing around the world.&nbsp;

This would not be the first time that North Korea will be launching a test for suicide drones.&nbsp;

Pyongyang first unveiled these drones in August, with experts saying the capability may be attributed&nbsp;to the country's budding alliance with Russia.

The nuclear-armed country has ratified a landmark defence pact with Moscow and is accused of deploying thousands of troops to Russia to support its war in Ukraine, prompting South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol to warn about the potential transfer of sensitive Russian military technology to North Korea.

Kim on Thursday oversaw the tests of drones designed to hit both land and sea targets, produced by North Korea's Unmanned Aerial Technology Complex, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said.

"He underscored the need to build a serial production system as early as possible and go into full-scale mass production," KCNA added.

The unmanned drones are designed to carry explosives and be deliberately crashed into enemy targets, effectively acting as guided missiles.

Thursday's test saw the drones "precisely" hit targets after flying along predetermined paths, KCNA reported.

"The suicide attack drones to be used within different striking ranges are to perform a mission to precisely attack any enemy targets on the ground and in the sea," the agency said.

Kim said the drones were an "easy to use... component of striking power" due to their relatively low production cost and expansive range of applications, according to KCNA.

He said the North had "recently attached importance" to developing unmanned hardware systems and to integrating them with the country's overall military strategy.

North Korea test-launched a new ballistic missile&nbsp;on Thursday (Oct 31), flexing its military muscle.&nbsp;

The country's state-run television aired video footage of the test of a huge new solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile dubbed Hwasong-19.

The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) lauded it as "the world's strongest strategic missile."

The missile flew higher than any previous North Korean missile, according to the North, as well as militaries in South Korea and Japan, which tracked its flight deep into space before it splashed down in the ocean between Japan and Russia.

In the video, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his daughter were seen watching the missile launch.

While questions remain over North Korea's ability to guide such a missile and protect a nuclear warhead as it re-enters the atmosphere, the Hwasong-19, like North Korea's other latest ICBMs, demonstrated the range to strike nearly anywhere in the United States.

"The new-type ICBM proved before the world the hegemonic position we have secured in the development and manufacture of nuclear delivery," KCNA quoted Kim as saying,

<h2>A 'perfected weapon system'</h2>

Developing advanced solid-fuel missiles, which are quicker to launch and harder to detect and destroy, has long been a goal for Kim.

The test proved that North Korea's "development and manufacture of nuclear delivery means... is absolutely irreversible", according to KCNA.

The missile is now a "perfected weapon system", the agency said, with Kim describing the launch as an "appropriate military action" to send a message to the country's rivals.&nbsp;

North Korea "would never change its line of bolstering up its nuclear forces," it said.

North Korea Tests Most Powerful ICBM

North Korea said it tested an intercontinental ballistic missile on Thursday, upgrading what it called the "world's most powerful strategic weapon", as Seoul warned Pyongyang could get missile technology from Russia for help with the war in Ukraine.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said the test was a warning to enemies that have been threatening the country's security, KCNA state news agency said.

"The test-fire is an appropriate military action that fully meets the purpose of informing the rivals, who have intentionally escalated the regional situation and posed a threat to the security of our Republic recently, of our counteraction will," Kim was quoted as saying by KCNA.

The muscle-flexing comes amid an international outcry and rising alarm over what the US&nbsp;and others say is North Korea's deployment of 11,000 troops to Russia - 3,000 of them close to the western frontlines with Ukraine.&nbsp;

The launch drew swift condemnation from South Korea, Japan, and the United States.

A day earlier, Seoul cited military intelligence suggesting the North may test-launch an ICBM or conduct a seventh nuclear test around the U.S. presidential election on Tuesday, seeking to draw attention to its growing military prowess.

Shin Seung-ki, head of research on North Korea's military at the state-run Korea Institute for Defense Analyses, said the launch was likely to test improved booster performance of an existing ICBM - possibly with Russia's help.

"North Korea will want to keep getting help like this because it saves times and costs while improving performance and upgrading the stability of weapons system," he said.

It could also be Pyongyang's response to pressure over its engagement with Russia, Shin said.

"The intention may be to show that it will not bow to pressure, that it will respond to strength with strength, and also to seek some influence on the US presidential election."

<h2>New records</h2>

The launch early on Thursday was the longest ballistic missile test by the North with a flight-time of 87 minutes, according to South Korea.&nbsp;

KCNA said the test set new records for its missile capabilities.

The missile took off on a sharply lofted trajectory from an area near the North's capital and splashed down about 200 km (125 miles) west of Japan's Okushiri island, off Hokkaido.

It reached an altitude of 7,000 km (4,350 miles)and flew a distance of 1,000 km, the Japanese government said.

The so-called lofted trajectory of a projectile flying at a sharply raised angle is intended to test its thrust and stability over much shorter distances relative to the designed range, partly for safety and to avoid the political fallout of sending a missile far into the Pacific.

North Korea's last ICBM, dubbed the Hwasong-18, was tested in December 2023. Fuelled by solid-propellant and fired from a road launcher, it was also launched at a sharply raised angle and flew for 73 minutes, translating to a potential range of 15,000 km on a normal trajectory.

That is a distance that puts anywhere in the mainland United States within range.

South Korea announced on Thursday new export controls on materials needed by North Korea to produce solid-fuel missiles.

Asked about the missile launch, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said China "has always believed that peace and stability, and promoting a political solution to the peninsula issue is in accordance with the common interests of all sides."

Pyongyang's latest test came just hours after U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and his South Korean counterpart Kim Yong-Hyun met in Washington to condemn the North Korean troop deployment in Russia.

Neither Moscow nor Pyongyang has directly acknowledged the deployment, but Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia on Wednesday questioned why its allies like North Korea could not help Moscow in its war against Ukraine when Western countries claim the right to help Kyiv.

South Korea said the deployment directly threatened its security because the North would gain valuable combat experience in modern warfare and was likely to be rewarded by Moscow with "technology transfers" in areas such as tactical nuclear weapons, ICBMs, ballistic missile submarines, and military reconnaissance satellites.

North Korea launches new intercontinental ballistic missile days ahead of US election

The United States, for the first time, said on Wednesday (Oct 23) that it had seen evidence of North Korean troops in Russia. The US assessed that at least 3,000 North Korean troops were transported by ship to the eastern Russian city of Vladivostok in early-to-mid October.

The White House confirmed the soldiers were transported from North Korea's Wonsan region to the eastern Russian city of Vladivostok. They were then taken to multiple military training sites in the east of Russia, where they underwent training.

The White House Spokesperson John Kirby said while addressing the media that the troops would become "legitimate military targets" if they engaged in combat in Ukraine.

"If these North Korean soldiers decide to join the fight against Ukraine, they will become legitimate military targets," Kirby said.

He further added, "It would also demonstrate an unprecedented level of direct military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, with security implications in Europe, as well as the Indo-Pacific. As we've said before, Russia's cooperation with the North Korean military violates multiple UN Security Council resolutions which prohibit the procurement of arms from North Korea and military arms training. This move is likewise a violation."

US confirms North Korean troops in Russia, says they would be 'legitimate' targets in Ukraine

On Thursday, October 17, 2024, North Korea confirmed that its newly revised constitution officially designates South Korea as "a hostile state" for the first time. This announcement comes just two days after North Korea destroyed the road and rail links at the border that once connected the two countries.

North Korea Declares South Korea A "Hostile State" In New Constitution

North Korea on Thursday (Oct 17) announced a major change in its constitution: South Korea is now defined as a "hostile" state. This marks the first confirmation by Pyongyang of legal changes the nation's premier Kim Jong Un ordered earlier this year.
