BJP on Thursday hit out at the Congress after a delegation of the opposition party`s UK representatives met Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn and discussed the "human rights situation in Kashmir".

Terming it as "appalling" the BJP said India will give a befitting reply to the Congress for these "shameful shenanigans."

Meanwhile, the Indian Overseas Congress hit back at the "malicious" statement by the BJP, which it said was "another attempt to distract people from their failures."

"Our meeting with @jeremycorbyn was held to condemn the Kashmir resolution passed by his Party &amp; to reiterate that J&amp;K is an internal matter &amp; outside intervention will not be accepted," the Indian Overseas Congress tweeted.

Corbyn put out a tweet about the very "productive meeting" he had with the Congress delegation and called for "de-escalation" and end of "cycle of violence" in the region.

"A very productive meeting with UK representatives from the Indian Congress Party where we discussed the human rights situation in Kashmir. There must be de-escalation and an end to the cycle of violence and fear which has plagued the region for so long," the British politician posted.

Soon after, the BJP hit back at the Congress for raking up the Kashmir issue in the meeting.

"Appalling! @INCIndia owes it to the people of India to explain what its leaders are telling foreign leaders about India. India will give a befitting reply to Congress for these shameful shenanigans!" the party said on its official Twitter handle.

Congress leader Anand Sharma denied the BJP`s allegations and said that any issue pertaining to J&amp;K are purely India`s internal affairs.

"We are shocked by this misrepresentation and any unauthorised statement that has been made on behalf of the Congress party. The delegation of Indian Overseas Congress that met has neither a mandate nor any authorisation to speak on any matter which pertains to policies or India`s domestic issues.

&nbsp;They are supposed to be only confined to the Indian diaspora," said Sharma.

The Congress spokesperson added that: "The INC`s position is firm, consistent and clear as articulated in our working committee resolution of August 6."

"Any issue pertaining to Jammu and Kashmir are purely India`s internal affairs. So what the Congress party has to say is communicated officially here and no other entity, individual or a body has any authority to do so. We disown any such claim in entirety. I am conveying this to the leadership of the Labour Party," he said.

On September 26, Britain`s opposition Labour Party had passed an emergency resolution on Kashmir at the party`s annual conference in Brighton which calls for the entry of international observers into the region.

The motion was a response to the decision by the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to bifurcate Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories and withdraw the region`s special status under Article 370.

Even at that time, the BJP strongly condemned the move and termed it a blatant interference in India`s internal matter.

The UK government`s official stance on Kashmir is that it remains a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan.

Last month, Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan had quoted the Congress while launching an attack on New Delhi over the Kashmir issue. He had even mentioned the Congress party during his speech in the UN General Assembly in New York last month.

Just days ahead of President's Xi meeting with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/mamallapuram-zhou-enlai-in-1956-and-modi-xi-in-2019-254588">PM Modi in Chennai</a>, China called on "India and Pakistan to step up dialogue on disputes including the Kashmir issue to enhance mutual trust and improve relations."

"China and India are important neighbours to each other. Both are large developing countries as well as major emerging markets. Since the Wuhan Informal Summit last year, China-India relations have shown sound momentum of development," Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Geng Shuang said.

"The two sides have steadily advanced cooperation in various fields and properly manage differences and sensitive issues," the foreign ministry spokesman added.

"It serves the common interests of both India and Pakistan and represents the shared expectation of regional countries and the international community," the foreign ministry spokesman added.

China's statement comes as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping are due to meet in Chennai's seaside <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/mahabalipuram-preparations-in-full-swing-for-informal-summit-between-modi-jinping-254576">heritage town of Mamallapuram</a> for an informal summit from October 11 to 13.

Showing the so-called solidarity with the Kashmiris on its part, Pakistan has reached out to numerous countries, including the Middle East, and China, ever since the Indian Parliament last month revoked Article 370 and Article 35 (A) of the Indian Constitution that accorded special status to the region. However, the cash-strapped country has been repeatedly snubbed by the international community over its efforts after New Delhi time and again denied any third party interference in the issue, calling it to be a "strictly internal" matter of the country. The address assumes significance as it comes in the backdrop of tensions between India and Pakistan after New Delhi earlier this month abrogated Article 370 that granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir and divided the former state into two Union Territories. Pakistan has been rattled by the Indian government's move to strip the special status to Jammu and Kashmir and has found itself completely isolated. The country has tried to internationalise the matter but has been snubbed on all fronts. The international community has made it clear that the Kashmir issue is strictly New Delhi's internal matter. The Pakistan government has downgraded bilateral ties with India in the wake of the decision and said it will consider all steps to counter what it described "illegal steps" taken by New Delhi.

The United Kingdom and France have called Kashmir a bilateral issue and urged a resolution of the issue through dialogue. In a conversation between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and British PM Boris Johnson on Tuesday afternoon, both sides discussed the ongoing India-Pakistan tensions, with the latter urging dialogue to resolve the issue.

A UK government readout said,"The Prime Minister and Prime Minister Modi discussed the current situation in Kashmir. The Prime Minister made clear that the UK views the issue of Kashmir is one for India and Pakistan to resolve bilaterally. He underlined the importance of resolving issues through dialogue." Both the leaders will be present at the G7 summit in France over the weekend and "ahead of the G7, the Prime Minister and Prime Minister Modi agreed on the importance of working together to tackle climate change and other threats to biodiversity", the UK readout added. Meanwhile, the Pakistani foreign minister SM Qureshi spoke to French Foreign minister Jean-Yves Le Drian during which France reiterated its position on Kashmir that its a bilateral issue. "It is up to the two countries, under the framework of their bilateral political dialogue, to resolve this dispute so as to establish lasting peace", French readout on Le Drian-Qureshi talks said. Paris also urged both parties for "restraint, de-escalation, and easing the situation" in Jammu and Kashmir. Indian Prime Minister will be in France on Thursday for a state visit where he will meet French President Emmanuel Macron and later participate in at the 45th G7 summit where he is expected to meet his British PM Johnson and US President Donald Trump.

This has been going on for decades. And I will do the best I can to meditate or do something with both (India and Pakistan) of them but they are not exactly friends at this moment. India, on the other hand, has maintained that any bilateral talks between India and Pakistan on Kashmir will only be considered if Khan dialled down the rhetoric. India never asked the US to mediate. This is not the first time that Trump has made a similar proposal. Last month, Trump claimed that Modi has asked him to mediate on Kashmir. India categorically denied Trump's claim. New Delhi has time and again stated that Kashmir is an entirely internal matter and a sovereign issue. It said that any discussion on Kashmir will take place bilaterally and only with Pakistan. Trump's latest comments come just days after the government of India revoked article 370 that guaranteed special status to the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. The move rattled Pakistan. Islamabad sought an emergency United Nations Security Council meeting on Kashmir. But four out of the five permanent members of the security council did not support Pakistan's contentions. World powers maintained that Kashmir is India's internal matter.
