The Enforcement Directorate has registered a case against INX Media, its founder Peter Mukerjea and his wife Indrani under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

The Mukerjeas are currently facing a trial in Mumbai for conspiring to kill Sheena Bora, Indrani&#39;s daughter from an earlier marriage, in April 2012.

INX media money laundering case: Karti Chidambaram sent to 5-day police custody

A long legal battle is in the offing for senior Congress leader P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram as the father-son duo are in the radar of the probe agencies in another case concerning the Aircel-Maxis deal.

While Karti was arrested in connection with the INX Media case in which the CBI has alleged that he was paid USD one million bribe by the media company through foreign entities, Chidambaram&#39;s role in granting FIPB approval to a offshore firm in the Aircel-Maxis deal is also under investigation by the agency.

Karti is fighting legal battles in the Supreme Court, the Madras High Court and the trial court here, while Chidambaram has knocked at the doors of the apex court apprehending &quot;continued harassment&quot; to him and his family members through investigations being conducted by the CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED) in these two cases.

Chidambaram&#39;s plea in the apex court assumes significance as the CBI, in its charge sheet before a special court here in 2014 in the Aircel-Maxis case against former telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran and others, had said it was probing how the then Finance Minister (Chidambaram himself) had granted Foreign Investement Promotion Board (FIPB) approval to a deal involving a foreign firm when only the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) was empowered to do so.

However, the CBI and ED cases in the Aircel-Maxis deal could not withhold judicial scrutiny as the special court had in February last year discharged Dayanidhi Maran, his industrialist brother Kalanithi Maran and others saying the alleged charges were based on &quot;misreading of official files&quot;, speculation and surmises of the complainant.

In April last year, the CBI had informed the Supreme Court that it was probing Chidambaram&#39;s role in the alleged irregularities in grant of FIPB approval in Aircel-Maxis case.

During the hearing before the top court, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, who has filed a petition in the top court in this regard, had said he had received a reply from CBI stating it was probing &quot;all angles&quot;, including the FIPB clearance given to the deal by Chidambaram.

Swamy had filed a private complaint in the 2G spectrum allocation case and the alleged scam in the Aircel-Maxis deal that had cropped up during the CBI probe. 
On January 4 this year, the apex court had directed the Centre to file a status report on the probe being conducted in the Aircel-Maxis deal case.

The CBI had said in its charge sheet in the Aircel-Maxis case that Chidambaram had granted FIPB approval in March 2006 to Mauritius-based M/s Global Communication Services Holdings Ltd, a subsidiary of Maxis, owned by Malaysian business tycoon T Ananda Krishnan, who is also an accused in the case.

The CBI had claimed that M/s Global Communication Services Holdings Ltd had sought FIPB approval for 800 million USD for which only the CCEA was competent, but Chidambaram had given approval to the firm in March 2006.

&quot;Further investigation is being carried out into the circumstances of said FIPB approval granted by the then Finance Minister. The related issues are also being investigated,&quot; the agency had said in its charge sheet.

Though the court has discharged Marans and others in the case, further probe by CBI regarding FIPB approval is still going on. Similarly, the ED is carrying out separate probe in the Aircel-Maxis deal.

An FIR, filed by the CBI on May 15 last year, had alleged irregularities in FIPB clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds to the tune of Rs 305 crore in 2007 when Chidambaram was the Union finance minister.

While the CBI has alleged that Karti had received funds to the tune of Rs 10 lakh in the INX Media case, the ED has also registered a money laundering case in the matter.

Chidambaram, in his petition before the apex court, has said that his fundamental rights were being violated due to &quot;illegal&quot; investigations being carried out by the CBI and the ED and the central government has been &quot;misusing&quot; its probe agencies.

He has said that being the Finance Minister then, he had granted FIPB approvals in the INX Media case and the Aircel-Maxis case in the &quot;normal course of official business&quot;and in discharge of his functions, he has &quot;never allowed any member of his family, including his son, or any other person to interfere with or influence the conduct of official business&quot;.

INX Media & Aircel-Maxis: Long legal battle awaits Chidambarams

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), who arrested&nbsp;Karti Chidambaram on Wednesday morning at the Chennai Airport, brought him to Delhi.&nbsp;

Karti, Congress leader and son of former finance minister P Chidambaram, was arrested for violating the Foreign Exchange Management Act. The CBI team is now bringing Karti to Delhi.

According to sources,&nbsp;Chidambaram was arrested by the CBI sleuths at Chennai airport around 8am when he returned from London.

INX Media money-laundering case: Karti Chidambaram arrested in Chennai, brought to Delhi by CBI

The court was informed that on February 17&nbsp;an accused had stated before the magistrate that Karti Chidambaram had asked for a million dollars in a hotel.

Abhishek Manu Singhvi while defending his client, said that two summons were given for interrogating Karti and he appeared on both occasions.

Karti went twice last year when he was summoned for questioning which lasted for 22 hours, Singhvi informed the court.

Singhvi added further that since the last inquiry was made six months ago and till date, no summons were received, so CBI&#39;s contention that his client did not cooperate does not hold true.

Karti&#39;s lawyer said CBI&#39;s second argument for remand that he is constantly touring abroad does not hold ground. Did he run away, Singhvi asked the court.

Karti has travelled abroad so far with the permission of the court, he asserted, adding that he had told the court about his arrival date and left after the court&#39;s permission and returned back as well.

The investigating agency alleged that to wriggle out of the situation without any punitive action, INX Media entered into a criminal conspiracy with Karti.

The ED further alleged that the FIPB unit of the finance ministry had not only granted illegal approval but also misinformed the investigation wing of Income Tax Department.&nbsp;

The ED alleges that Bhaskararaman, a qualified CA, had been assisting Karti in managing his &quot;ill-gotten wealth&quot; in India and abroad.

The ED had said the investigation required the presence of Bhaskararaman for collecting vital evidence and other information which was within his special knowledge and exclusive domain.

Chidambaram, who is also a senior advocate, has claimed in his plea that as part of &quot;political vendetta&quot;, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) have made &quot;vexatious&quot; searches and issued the repeated summons in these cases.

&quot;The writ petition is being filed to defend and protect the petitioner?s fundamental rights under Article 14 (equality before law), 19 (freedom of speech and expression) and 21 (right to life and personal liberty) of the Constitution and to defend his right to privacy and the right to live, along with members of his family, in dignity,&quot; the petition said.

&quot;The CBI and the ED, as part of political vendetta, have made vexatious searches, issued repeated summons, unreasonably questioned persons for unconscionably long hours, unlawfully attached fixed deposits, maliciously leaked false information to the media and otherwise caused extreme harassment, anguish and humiliation to me and my son, and to other persons who are normal business and social friends of my son,? Chidambaram moves SC for protection of fundamental rights

He has also been told to return to India by February 28.

It has been alleged that Karti illegally took service charges for getting the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to the INX Media for receiving funds from abroad worth Rs 305 crore in 2007 when his father P Chidambaram was the finance minister in Congress-led UPA government.

A lookout notice issued by the CBI on July 18 prevented Karti from traveling abroad without the investigating agency&#39;s permission.

The apex court had rejected Karti&#39;s plea after the CBI opposed it, saying he might tamper with the evidence, which is very crucial for the ongoing investigation, in the country.

Earlier CBI opposed the former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram&#39;s son Karti Chidambaram&#39;s plea to the Supreme Court to travel aboard, saying it has serious apprehensions that he would tamper with evidence during his overseas stay.

The agency told the bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice AM Khanwilkar and Justice DY Chandrachud that it has incriminating evidence against Karti Chidambaram which it had already submitted to the court in a sealed cover.

However, junior Chidambaram, who had sought permission to go to Britain for his daughter&#39;s admission to Cambridge, told the court that the agency should prove that he has other accounts abroad, except the one he has already disclosed.

Top court refuses Karti Chidambaram's plea to move abroad

The CBI today (August 28) questioned former finance minister P Chidambaram&#39;s son Karti for the second time in a corruption case of alleged clearance given to a media group owned by Peter Mukerjea and his wife Indrani for bringing foreign funds into their venture, CBI sources said.

Karti arrived at the CBI headquarters here at around&nbsp;11.30am.

Three suspected associates of Karti, Bhaskar Raman, Ravi Vishwanathan and Mohanan Rakesh are also being questioned today in connection with the case,&nbsp;the sources said.

The agency is examining him in connection with a Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given to media group INX Media for receiving funds from Mauritius when his father P Chidambaram was the Union finance minister.

The lookout circulars were issued by the central government over a corruption case filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The top court has asked Karti Chidambaram, a businessman and Congress member, to join the CBI investigation in the corruption case against him. The court has directed him to appear before the CBI and has forbidden him from travelling abroad.
