Polish President Karol Nawrocki abruptly cancelled his visit to Africa while in mid-flight and returned to Warsaw on Friday as riot police were deployed around the country's Constitutional Court. The developments followed the suspension of the court's chief justice amid an escalating political confrontation between the centrist government and the nationalist right. Dozens of police officers guarded the court's entrance as supporters of the opposition right-wing Law and Justice party (PiS) gathered to protest the removal of Constitutional Court President Bogdan Swieczkowski. The court's official account on X described the development as a 'coup d'etat', while some demonstrators chanted ‘Tusk traitor’ as they criticised Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government. Several protesters held Roman Catholic rosaries and religious images while saying prayers. Police confirmed that three people had been arrested after attempting to enter the court complex. Tusk's government has been attempting for weeks to remove judges from the Constitutional Court who were appointed by the previous PiS administration, which governed Poland from 2015 to 2023. During that period, the court frequently ruled in favour of Polish legislation over European Union law. The EU accused Poland's highest court of being too closely aligned with the nationalist political authorities at the time. Also Read: Prediction markets are betting big on the US midterms.
Nawrocki returns amid political turmoil
Tusk promised to resolve Poland's dispute with Brussels after winning the 2023 election. However, the country's president, an independent politician aligned with the right wing, has blocked his appointments to the court. Former PiS prime minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski addressed the demonstrators and urged Nawrocki to take action. The president announced that he had cancelled his official visit to Senegal while already in the air and ordered his aircraft to return to Warsaw. According to media reports, he was expected to travel directly from the airport to the Constitutional Court. The suspension of Swieczkowski was announced by another judge, Anna Korwin-Piotrowska, who said the decision was necessary to restore the rule of law. Justice Minister Waldemar Zurek, who also serves as attorney general, told journalists that he had requested the removal of the legal immunity of Swieczkowski and his deputy, Bartlomiej Sochanski. "This court has become private property; we must restore its proper functioning," he added. Tusk defended the government's actions in a post on X."Restoring the rule of law is our duty," he said. “After years of PiS-led lawlessness, this is a difficult process, sometimes painful, and it requires decisive action. There is no other way.”

Conflict over Poland’s Constitutional Tribunal escalates in Warsaw: judge suspends its leadership and president cuts short Africa trip

A de facto power struggle has erupted within one of Poland’s most important state institutions in Warsaw today. For now, the outcome of this confrontation remains uncertain.

Judge Anna Korwin-Piotrowska called the police to the grounds of the Constitutional Tribunal, citing a potential threat to the safety of judges and staff.

Police did not enter the building, but a significant number of officers have been deployed in the surrounding area.

Korwin-Piotrowska suspended Tribunal President Bogdan Święczkowski and his deputy, Bartłomiej Sochański, for one month, temporarily taking charge of the institution herself.

Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, called the developments a “coup” and urged Polish President Karol Nawrocki to intervene.

Nawrocki has cut short his visit to Senegal and is returning to Poland.

The conflict stems from a deep division over the composition of the court. Donald Tusk’s government refuses to recognise the Tribunal’s rulings because of judges appointed under the previous PiS government.

Meanwhile, Nawrocki and Święczkowski refuse to recognise judges elected by the Sejm in 2026.

Korwin-Piotrowska is among them: the president refused to accept her oath of office, while Święczkowski had previously prevented her from participating in court proceedings.— NEXTA (@nexta_tv) October 30, 2026

Constitutional Court rejects suspension
The Constitutional Court's official website was inaccessible on Friday evening. Meanwhile, its official X account maintained that a 'coup d'etat' had taken place and insisted that Swieczkowski remained in office. The account also stated that Korwin-Piotrowska could not assume the role of interim chief justice because she had not been sworn in by the president. Amid the uncertainty surrounding the court's leadership, Korwin-Piotrowska defended the importance of the institution. "In modern Europe, a democratic state cannot function without a constitutional court (...) that acts as a guarantor of citizens' rights and freedoms."

Poland faces a constitutional court crisis as President Karol Nawrocki returns from an Africa trip amid coup d'etat claims, protests and political tensions

US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday (May 21) that the United States will deploy 5,000 additional troops to Poland, reversing earlier indications that a planned troop deployment had been canceled. Trump said the decision was influenced by his close relationship with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, a nationalist ally whom he publicly supported during last year’s elections. “I am pleased to announce that the United States will be sending an additional 5,000 Troops to Poland,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform. The president did not provide further operational details, but the announcement appeared linked to a previously uncertain deployment involving several thousand US troops to Poland. Last week, US officials indicated that a planned deployment of 4,000 American troops to Poland had been scrapped. The move was seen as part of the Trump administration’s broader effort to reduce overseas troop commitments and pressure NATO allies over defense contributions and support during the Iran conflict. Also Read: Iran rapidly rebuilding military capabilities, drone production faster than expected: US intelligence

Trump, in his Truth Social post, wrote, “Based on the successful Election of the now President of Poland, Karol Nawrocki, who I was proud to Endorse, and our relationship with him, I am pleased to announce that the United States will be sending an additional 5,000 Troops to Poland. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP.” Vice President JD Vance clarified on Tuesday (May 19) that the troop deployment had only been delayed rather than canceled, adding that Trump had not made a ‘final determination’. Vance also stressed that Europe must stand on its ‘own two feet’, echoing Trump’s repeated demands that European allies shoulder a greater share of their defense responsibilities. Trump has increasingly criticised allies that failed to support military operations in the Middle East or contribute to security efforts in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has effectively shut down. https://www.wionews.com/videos/raul-castro-indicted-in-us-rubio-asks-cubans-to-get-rid-of-government-1779385571929/embed Earlier this month, the Pentagon announced plans to withdraw 5,000 US troops from Germany after Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Iran was ‘humiliating’ the United States during negotiations. The latest troop announcement highlights growing tensions between Washington and some NATO allies as the Trump administration pushes for a stronger European military role amid ongoing geopolitical crises.
