A complete jury of 12 members, along with an alternate, was sworn in for the historic criminal trial in former US President Donald Trump's hush money case in New York City on Thursday (April 18). The jury was finalised after nearly 200 potential jurors were questioned by the two sides regarding how fair and impartial they could be towards the former president, who has criminal charges against him. After the 12 jurors were selected, state Judge Juan Merchan said, "We have our jury." The court still needs to select five more alternates. "I am hopeful we will finish tomorrow," said the judge, before he swore the jury in. The court had earlier excused two of the jurors seated. The panel comprises seven men and five women. The new jurors who were added to the panel on Thursday (April 18) include a product development manager, a physical therapist, a retired wealth manager and a speech therapist. A lawyer, a salesman, a teacher and a software engineer were sworn in as the jurors on Tuesday (April 16). Trump calls the case "ridiculous", "unfair" While leaving the court on Thursday (April 18), Trump showed dozens of media articles which criticised the Manhattan charges against him and said that the charges were "political" in nature. "It's a very unfair, very bad thing," said the presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, who is most likely to challenge President Joe Biden in November's election. "The whole world is watching this hoax. I’m supposed to be in a lot of different places campaigning. But I’ve been here all day on a trial that really is a very unfair trial," said the former president. Watch: Trump on Trial: Friend turned foe? The criminal trial, which is the first one in which a former US president is the defendant, started from an alleged hush-money payment made to a porn star. Before the 2016 elections, porn star Stormy Daniels was made a payment of $130,000 (£105,000) to purchase her silence regarding her alleged affair with Trump. (With inputs from agencies)

An Uzbek man, who was accused of killing eight people in a truck attack that took place six years ago in New York, was sentenced to life imprisonment after the jurors failed to agree on the punishment of the death penalty Monday.

Prosecutors had argued demanding capital punishment for Sayfullo Saipov, who was convicted in January of various murder and terrorism charges over the truck attack that happened on October 31, 2017.

Saipov was sentenced to a life term, devoid of any possibility of parole after the Manhattan federal court's jury failed to unanimously agree on the death penalty.

A rented pickup truck was driven by Saipov down a Manhattan bike path where New Yorkers were preparing to celebrate Halloween.

Among those killed was a group of five friends who had travelled from Argentina. Around 12 others were injured before Saipov was shot in the abdomen by the police.

It was termed the deadliest attack that took place in New York since the World Trade Centre buildings were brought down on September 11, 2001, Al-Qaeda hijackings.

Saipov, who had shifted to the United States in 2010, is believed to have acted as per the instructions of the Islamic State militant group, which called him one of its "soldiers”.

Saipov's trial was the first federal prosecution carried out during the presidency of Joe Biden in which capital punishment was sought by the Justice Department (DoJ).

The step was taken despite the incumbent US president's opposition to the death penalty and a moratorium on any federal execution, stated by Attorney General, Merrick Garland in July 2021.

According to the experts, the Justice Department appeared for appealing for capital punishment for terror offences only.

If the court had granted the death penalty to Saipov, then the authorities would only have been able to carry it out if the moratorium was lifted or when a future president is elected.

New York truck attacker escapes death penalty as jurors fail to agree

Comedian Bill Cosby denied a California woman`s claim that he sexually assaulted her at the Playboy Mansion in the mid-1970s in a recorded deposition shown on Wednesday to a jury considering one of the last legal cases against him.

Judy Huth, who is seeking unspecified damages in a civil lawsuit she filed in 2014, has testified that Cosby forced her to perform a sex act at the mansion when she was a teenager.

On Wednesday, jurors were shown a roughly 10-minute video that showed clips of Cosby answering questions from one of Huth`s attorneys during a deposition in 2015.

Cosby answered "no" to questions about whether he tried to put his hands down Huth`s pants and then took her hand and used it to masturbate, as she alleges.

He acknowledged that he would bring guests to the mansion but said he does not remember Huth or the friend who said she accompanied her that night. "I don`t know Ms. Huth," he said.

Asked if Huth`s account could have been accurate but Cosby had forgotten the incident, he said that was not possible because "this young lady is saying that she told me she was 15."

Cosby, now 84, said he never pursued sexual contact with anyone he knew was under 18. He is not expected to attend the trial in person.

In cross-examination of Huth, Cosby attorney Jennifer Bonjean challenged her account, including her revised timeline.

When the lawsuit was filed in December 2014, Huth said the incident occurred in 1974, when she was 15. She testified this week that she recently concluded that she had been mistaken about the year and now believes it happened in 1975.

Bonjean pressed Huth on Wednesday about past traumas in her life and antidepressant use, suggesting any emotional distress she suffered was unrelated to her time with Cosby.

Huth, now 64, testified that she was abused by a former partner and was a passenger in a car accident that left five people in another vehicle dead.

But she said her interaction with Cosby had the most impact. "Nothing as bad as that, that`s for sure," Huth said.
The civil trial in California is taking place 11 months after Cosby was freed from prison when Pennsylvania`s highest court threw out his sexual assault conviction in a different case.

Cosby is best known for his role as the lovable husband and father in the 1980s television comedy series "The Cosby Show," earning him the nickname 'America's Dad.'

But his family-friendly reputation was shattered after more than 50 women accused him of sexual assaults over nearly five decades.

In the ongoing defamation trial, jurors have started to begin discussing the claims of actors Johnny Depp and Amber Heard on Friday, media reports said. For the last six weeks, the former Hollywood couple has been making several conflicting revelations about their troubled marriage.

In closing arguments, Depp’s attorney Camille Vasquez said on Friday, "Mr. Depp experienced persistent verbal, physical and emotional abuse by Ms. Heard. We ask you to give Mr. Depp his life back by telling the world Mr. Depp is not the abuser Ms. Heard says he is." The allegations of Heard about abuse by Depp were "wild, over-the-top and implausible". She has ruined the reputation of Depp in Hollywood and among fans, Vasquez added.
