On Tuesday, Bailey sought to clarify the matter, telling The Hollywood Reporter that the "issue of opening an Academy office is something that has been talked about and tossed about in the press quite a bit since we`ve been here." 
 
Refuting some rumours, Bailey added that an office "is an extraordinary idea but the Academy is not a corporation, the Academy is a member-based organization and decisions are made by administration and staff along with the 54 members of the board of governors. This is an idea, it`s a germ of an idea, which we have talked about here with a number of people. There is a lot of enthusiasm for it." 
 
Bailey stated that the office in London covers the UK and European countries which have numerous Academy members while the New York office deals with many members on the East Coast."

Right now, there are 27 Indian members in the Academy so, again, it`s a germ of an idea [to have an India office," Bailey said.He added, "I can`t say anything more than that except that we are very excited with the enthusiasm. We`ll see what happens." 
 
Last year, as part of diversity push, the Academy added 928 new members, which also included Indian celebrities like Madhuri Dixit, Anil Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Shah Rukh Khan, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/ali-fazal-on-being-inducted-into-oscar-academy-diversity-also-means-breaking-stereotypes-150448">Ali Fazal </a>and producers Aditya Chopra and Guneet Monga, among others.

On being asked about how Indian membership could increase, Bailey said, "historically, members have been accepted when current members sponsored other members with two letters of support from people in their respective branch [such as film editing and cinematography." 
 
Bailey noted that since the Academy unveiled its 2020 initiative, with the idea to double the number of its women and diverse members by 2020, "we decided to do more proactive investigation and exploration of filmmakers around the world that the executive committees of the different branches could look at and ask questions to find out who they are. So instead of being passive, we have been reaching out." 
 
Bailey also highlighted that this means that it is also up to local industries, like in India, which can interact with the organisation and suggest more names."There is an aspect called committee-considered, and so many of our increasing international members of the last three years have been accepted into the Academy through the committee-considered list," he explained. 
 
Tawde had also tweeted that the Maharashtra state government had proposed to the Academy to include a bust of Dadasaheb Phalke, at the upcoming Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. Phalke made India`s first feature film, `Raja Harishchandra` in 1913.&nbsp;

Captivated by the beauty of the Taj Mahal, the monument of love, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World, Bailey told ANI that the experience is even better than a movie. "All Americans have an understanding of the importance, the symbolic and cultural aesthetic and beauty of the Taj Mahal. So, for us to actually see it live is like, better than a movie," Bailey told ANI.

The couple was received by the mayor of Agra, Navin Jain. During his interaction with the mayor, Bailey discussed the future collaboration between Indian and American cinema.

"Just in the few days that we have been here, Carol and I have begun to get an understanding of the richness, diversity and all the languages that Indian cinema is produced in. We are still just discovery since there are more movies made in India than anywhere else in the world, maybe 3 or 4 times more than we make in America. This is a strong signal to us that we very much want to increase the relationship with India," Bailey said.

Bailey has been the academy chief for the past two years. He recently attended the 56th Maharashtra State Film Awards as chief guest and is also expected to visit Delhi during his stay in India.

Talking about the Academy museum, he said, "The Academy museum is going to open early next year. We hoped that it would open by the end of this year, but due to various events we have decided to open it in March or April probably."

He added, "I am very proud to be here as the first President of the Academy to visit India. Carol and I come from the ground level of film-making... We bring a perspective and an understanding of the film-making process."

Asked about representation India cinema abroad, Bailey said, "I think that they need a much broader distribution in large parts of the world. I know there are Indian films they continue to show at Cannes and in Venice. But it`s very hard certainly in Europe and the US for these films to get much of the exhibition in the theatres... It`s such a rich tradition. Most of us only know Indian cinema today from a very limited perspective of musical and dance films of Bollywood, but there is so much more. There are ways to do it."

Bailey, 75, a cinematographer whose credits include &quot;Groundhog Day&quot; and &quot;The Big Chill,&quot; was elected to a four-year term as head of the Academy in August.

His brief tenure has been marked by the birth of the #MeToo movement started by actress Alyssa Milano and which went global, highlighting accusations of sexual abuse.

Harvey Weinstein, whose studio Miramax was behind hits such as &quot;Shakespeare In Love&quot; and &quot;Pulp Fiction,&quot; was expelled from the Academy in October following accusations of sexual harassment and abuse by dozens of women.

In December, the Academy adopted a code of conduct for its members.
