Indian athletes have been on a roll in the ongoing Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022&nbsp;edition&nbsp;in Birmingham. So far, the likes of Mirabai Chanu, Jeremy&nbsp;Lalrinnunga and few others have done the nation proud by winning medals in their respective sport.&nbsp;

Talking about the young sensation Lalrinnunga, the 19-year-old broke the CWG record in the men's 67kg category by lifting 140kgs in snatch and 160kgs in clean and jerk to&nbsp;become only the&nbsp;second Indian weightlifter to clinch the medal. Meanwhile, Samoa's Vaipava Ioane ended at the&nbsp;second spot with lifts of 127 and 166 kgs in the two rounds.

During the medal ceremony, Vaipava's special gesture for Jeremy made heads turn. Loane gifted his traditional Samoan garland to Jeremy and hugged the Indian teen sensation&nbsp;tightly.

Later, Jeremy dwelled on the special gesture from loane while speaking&nbsp;to the official Olympics website and pointed out, "Thoda thoda jaanta hai zyada nahi&nbsp;(He was my senior, but I knew him only a little, not that much).&nbsp;Unhone kuch unka traditional Samoa mein voh log bahut maanta hai, jo pehna that, voh gift diya mujhe&nbsp;(Vaipava was wearing the traditional Samoan garland, which he gave me as a gift)."

Jeremy further opined on his historic win and stated, "I am happy with my gold medal but I couldn't show my complete performance, how much hard work I have put in. We came in a month before and the training went really well. Unfortunately in the clean and jerk, I couldn't perform as much as I wanted to due to cramps, but I am happy."

19-year-old weightlifter&nbsp;Jeremy Lalrinnunga produced a brave performance in the&nbsp;men’s 67kg category at the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 to extend India’s dominance in weightlifting at the showpiece event.&nbsp;Lalrinnunga clinched gold with a record overall lift of 300 kg to bag the country’s second gold medal at the CWG 2022 so far.

Lalrinnunga went for a solid 140 kg lift in the snatch round and managed to successfully pull it off to gain a healthy lead of 10 kg over his nearest rival in the final ahead of the clean and jerk round. He ended up getting injured during the clean and jerk round but managed to lift an impressive 160 kg to finish on top of the podium.

Lalrinnunga also suffered from muscle cramps during the final but battled them to emerge victorious. He attempted to lift 165 kg in the clean and jerk round but ended up failing after suffering a muscle cramp. The 19-year-old was seen reeling in pain as he went down on the floor.

However, he braved the injury to return and complete a successful lift of 160 kg which was enough to secure his gold on his debut at the Commonwealth Games. He had set a Games record with his 160 kg lift in the snatch round and his 200 kg overall lift is also a record at the Commonwealth Games so far in the men’s 67kg category.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga battles injury to clinch India’s 2nd gold at Commonwealth Games 2022, creates new record

He is living an Olympic dream at 15 but Indian weightlifting sensation Jeremy Lalrinnunga has no time to stay in the moment as he has to bulk up in pursuit of a bigger Olympic goal in less than two years.&nbsp;

The Mizo teen, touted as the next best thing in Indian weightlifting, came up with a personal best effort in the 62kg category to clinch India's first gold medal at the Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires on Monday. He is happy beyond words but does not have the time to sit back and relish the moment for too long.&nbsp;

"I am feeling really happy that I won the gold medal here," Lalrinnunga told PTI from the Argentine capital.

"I am returning to Patiala on October 21. I have to train hard now for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. I am going to change my weight category to 67kg for the Olympics so I have to work harder," he added.

Son of a national-level boxer Lalneihtluanga, Lalrinnunga aspired to don the gloves too but shifted to weightlifting as it involved just power to excel, something he found fascinating.

"A new weightlifting academy opened in my village. The moment I saw it I wanted to try out the sport. I used to do boxing when I was younger but when I tried weightlifting I loved it. It's a sport that involves strength and that is the reason I love it," Lalrinnunga said.&nbsp;

He was eight when Lalrinnunga was enrolled at the Mizoram Weightlifting Academy. A year later he was picked by the scouts of the Army Sports Institute in Pune.&nbsp;

"I have been training at the Army Sports Institute since 2012," he said.

Starting off in the 50kg category, Lalrinnunga won the national gold but the teenager has struggled with maintaining his weight, jumping from 50kg to 62kg in a span of two years.

"As I was growing my height and weight was increasing. Then coach sir advised me to switch to 56kg.

"After shifting to 56kg also my body continued to grow and it was very difficult for me to maintain that weight, so we decided to go even higher switching to 62kgs."

However, weight issues were not the only obstacles in Lalrinnunga's Youth Olympics preparation, the teenager also contracted chicken pox months before the big event.

"I suffered from chicken pox in May so I had to gain back my strength for 62kg. My focus was on the Youth Olympics so I had to work very hard to recover and start training.

"I learned a lot of new techniques in the process. We focused mainly on strength training and perfecting the technique," Lalrinnunga said.&nbsp;

Asian Games champion shooter Saurabh Chaudhary wins gold at Youth Olympics

Newly crowned youth Olympic champion Jeremy Lalrinnunga wanted to follow the footsteps of his boxer father but no sooner did the teenager see the unadulterated use of strength in weightlifting he had his heart set on the sport.

The 15-year-old created history by clinching India's first ever Youth Olympics gold after lifting a personal best total of 274kg (124kg +150kg) in the men's 62kg weight category in Buenos Aires.

"I am feeling really happy that I won the gold medal here," Lalrinnunga told PTI from the Argentine capital.

As his father Lalneihtluanga was a national level medal-winning boxer, Lalrinnunga himself aspired to become a pugilist from an early age but that changed when he learned about weightlifting.&nbsp;

"A new weightlifting academy opened in my village. The moment I saw it I wanted to try out the sport. I used to do boxing when I was younger but when I tried weightlifting I loved it.

"It's a sport that involves strength and that is the reason I love it," Lalrinnunga said.&nbsp;

Soon after an eight-year-old Lalrinnunga was enrolled at the Mizoram Weightlifting Academy. A year later he was sent to the Army Sports Institute to train in Pune.&nbsp;

"I have been training at the Army Sports Institute since 2012," the Aizawl boy said.

"As I was growing my height and weight was increasing. Then coach sir advised me to switch to 56kg. After shifting to 56kg also my body continued to grow and it was very difficult for me to maintain that weight, so we decided to go even higher switching to 62kgs."

However, weight issues were not the only obstacles in Lalrinnunga's Youth Olympics preparation, the teenager also contracted chicken pox months before the big event.

"I suffered from chicken pox in May so I had to gain back my strength for 62kg. My focus was on the Youth Olympics so I had to work very hard to recover and start training. I learned a lot of new techniques in the process. We focused mainly on strength training and perfecting the technique," Lalrinnunga said.

With the Youth Olympics gold under his belt, Lalrinnunga is already gearing up for the future. He is eyeing the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

"I am returning to Patiala in October 21st. I have to train hard now for the Tokyo Olympics. I am going to change my body weight category to 67kg for the Olympics so I have to work harder," Lalrinnunga said.
