She said China's first demand is that the Philippines remove the warship immediately and restore the reef to its original, uninhabited state.

Mao warned, "If the Philippines sends large amounts of construction materials to the warship and attempts to build fixed facilities and a permanent outpost, China will not accept it and will resolutely stop it in accordance with law and regulations."

Pending the towing, Beijing will permit Manila to send "living necessities, out of humanitarianism" to the Sierra Madre, but only if the Philippine side gives advance notice of the supply trips and "after on-site verification is conducted" by China, she added.

"I want to address those Americans who feel the loneliness and exhaustion of being the country that has upheld the international order,"&nbsp;Kishida&nbsp;said.

"The leadership of the United States is indispensable. Without U.S. support, how long before the hopes of Ukraine would collapse under the onslaught from Moscow? Without the presence of the United States, how long before the Indo-Pacific would face even harsher realities?"

Addresses to joint meetings of the Senate and House are an honor generally reserved for the closest U.S. allies, typically no more than once or twice a year. The last was by Israeli President Isaac Herzog on July 19, 2023.

Kishida&nbsp;is only the second Japanese prime minister ever to address a joint meeting, after Shinzo Abe on April 29, 2015.

His remarks were greeted several times by standing ovations, especially as he recounted the years of his childhood spent in New York and close Japanese-U.S. ties.

Kishida&nbsp;said the world was at a "historic turning point," with freedom and democracy under threat, emerging countries holding more economic power and climate change and rapid advances in artificial intelligence disrupting peoples' lives.

<h2>CHINA 'UNPRECEDENTED' CHALLENGE</h2>

He also warned about North Korea's nuclear program and exports of missiles supporting Russia's war in Ukraine. But the biggest challenge the world faces comes from China, he said.

"China's current external stance and military actions present an unprecedented and the greatest strategic challenge, not only to the peace and security of Japan but to the peace and stability of the international community at large,"&nbsp;Kishida&nbsp;said. "Ukraine of today may be East Asia of tomorrow."

Japan has consistently raised concerns about Chinese military activity close to its islands and neighboring Taiwan.

Taiwan, claimed by China as its own territory, has raised its alert level since Russia invaded Ukraine, wary of the possibility Beijing might make a similar move on the island, though it has reported no signs this is about to happen.

To stress the importance of Taiwan, Republican Representative Michael McCaul, chairman of the House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee, brought Taiwan's Representative to the United States, Alexander Yui, as his guest for&nbsp;Kishida's speech.

China's state-run Global Times newspaper said in an editorial this week that Japan and the U.S. were taking a leading role in efforts to "contain and suppress China."

Among these, six were located in hospital rooms with CPE-positive patients, while the remaining three were found in a nurse centre, a waste room, and an ice machine.

Genomic analysis found out&nbsp;the presence of bacterial strains such as "Klebsiella variicola, Klebsiella quasipneumoniae, and Escherichia coli."

Despite replacing all sinks in the pediatric ward with new ones properly disinfected with hydrogen peroxide, CPE contamination persisted, the team found.

Moreover, DNA sequences suggested that the resistance mechanism might have been transferred from one bacterial species to another within the hospital.

The team noted, "The discovery of the same bacterial species in sinks in adjoining rooms indicates that pathogen transmission may be possible from one sink to another via the drains and connected plumbing."

The President and First Lady welcomed Kishida Fumio and Kishida Yuko at the White House for a guest book signing and official gift exchange.

As the official gift, the President and First Lady presented a three-legged table that was handmade by a Japanese American owned company in Pennsylvania.

The 17-inch table was crafted from American black walnut wood – one of the most precious woods native to North America. It also included a plaque to commemorate the Official Visit.

Biden gifted to the PM a custom framed lithograph and a two-volume LP set, both of which were autographed by iconic American musical artist Billy Joel. The President also gifted Kishida a vintage vinyl record collection of great American music artists in a custom leather presentation box.

The US First lady gifted Kishida a framed painting of the Yoshino cherry tree that she planted with Kishida on the South Lawn last spring.

She also presented an autographed soccer ball that was signed by the US Women's National Soccer Team and the Japanese Women's National Football Team before the United States and Japan played in the SheBelieves Cup semifinal match in Atlanta, Georgia, last weekend.

The couples then went to BlackSalt, a seafood restaurant in the Palisades neighbourhood of Northwest DC.

The two leaders have met nearly a dozen times over the past three years in Tokyo and Washington and in cities around the world.

"This official state visit will build on the immense progress between our two nations that we've made towards creating a safer and more secure Indo-Pacific, as well as mutual prosperity for our peoples.

"Over the course of the visit, the president and the prime minister will highlight the high ambition of our alliance, in the defence and technology space but also across the board, deepening our partnerships on space, technology, economic investment, fighting climate change, coordinating global diplomacy, and strengthening our people to people ties," said US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

According to the NSA, the two leaders will announce measures to enhance defence and cooperation of forces.

"There will be major deliverables on space as we lead the way on space exploration and returning to the moon," Sullivan told reporters at a news conference.

"There will be announcements of significant research partnerships between our leading institutions on critical and emerging technologies such as AI, quantum, semiconductors, and clean energy. All of this will strengthen our economic ties and economic security as we announce significant commercial deals as part of the state visit," he said.

Japan is one of the largest providers of economic assistance and budget support to Ukraine, one of the largest investors in development and infrastructure in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands.

The visit will highlight Japan's continued role in global diplomacy and development and the coordination that the US and Japan have together with significant deliverables on global assistance and investment both inside and outside the Indo-Pacific, Sullivan said.

"We will also announce new initiatives to further foster our cultural connections and promote ties between current changemakers and future generations of leaders," he said.

Following his visit, Kishida will initiate the evening that will carry through tomorrow, he said.

"President Biden will welcome President Marcos of the Philippines to the White House on Thursday for his second bilateral meeting at the White House in as many years,” Sullivan said.

Biden is also slated to host the first ever trilateral leaders summit between the United States, Japan, and the Philippines three closely aligned maritime democracies with increasingly convergent strategic objectives and interests.

"Just this past week, our three countries and Australia held joint naval drills in the South China Sea. When I met with my Japanese and Filipino counterparts in Tokyo last June, we agreed to enhance our nation's trilateral partnership, and this week is a culmination of months of effort since that meeting in Tokyo last June," he said.
