Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched the Jal Jeevan Mission mobile application- which aims to improve awareness among stakeholders and for greater transparency and accountability of schemes under the initiative.

The Prime Minister said that the Jal Jeevan Mission has been empowering women of the country by saving their time and efforts which was earlier consumed in covering long distances to fetch drinking water.

During an interaction with the Prime Minister, various Gram Panchayat heads and Pani Samitis/ Village Water and Sanitation Committees (VWSC) representatives told PM Modi that through the Jal Jeevan Mission every household in their villages has now a tap connection that provides them with clean drinking water.

During the interaction, the Prime Minister was informed that women in villages now invest their time in educating their children and participating in other activities which generate income.

On the 150th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi PM Modi also launched Rashtriya Jal Jeevan Kosh, where any individual, institution, corporate, or philanthropist, be it in India or abroad, can contribute to help provide tap water connection in every rural household, school, anganwadi centre, ashramshala, and other public institutions.According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister` Office on Friday, nationwide Gram Sabhas on Jal Jeevan Mission will also take place during the day today.

The Gram Sabhas will discuss planning and management of village water supply systems and also work towards long-term water security.Pani Samitis play a key role in planning, implementation, management, operation and maintenance of village water supply systems, thereby providing clean tap water to every household on a regular and long-term basis.

Out of over 6 lakh villages, Pani Samitis/ VWSCs have been constituted in around 3.5 lakh villages. More than 7.1 lakh women have been trained to test the quality of water by using Field Test Kits.

On August 15, 2019, Prime Minister announced the Jal Jeevan Mission to provide clean tap water to every household.

At the time of the launch of the mission, only 3.23 Crore (17 per cent) rural households had a tap water supply.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, in the last two years, more than five Crore households have been provided with tap water connections.

As of date, about 8.26 Crore (43 per cent) rural households have a tap water supply in their homes.

Every rural household in 78 districts, 58 thousand Gram Panchayats and 1.16 lakh villages are getting tap water supply.

Till now, tap water supply has been provided in 7.72 lakh (76 per cent) schools and 7.48 lakh (67.5 per cent) anganwadi centres.

To realize the Prime Minister`s vision of `Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas`, and following the `bottom up` approach, Jal Jeevan Mission is implemented in partnership with States with a budget of Rs. 3.60 lakh Crores.Further, Rs. 1.42 lakh Crore has been allocated to PRIs as a tied grant under the 15th Finance Commission for water and sanitation in villages for the period 2021-22 to 2025-26.&nbsp;

Increasing access to the improved and sustainable water supply is critical to developing human capital to unleash the growth potential of rural areas.&nbsp;

The projects will provide household tap water connections in all rural households of 2,995 villages and will benefit about 42 lakh population of these districts.&nbsp;

Village Water and Sanitation Committees/ Paani Samiti have been constituted in all these villages, who will shoulder the responsibility of operation and maintenance. The total estimated cost of the projects is Rs 5,555.38 Crore. The projects are planned to be completed in 24 months.

The Prime Minister will also interact with Village Water &amp; Sanitation Committee/ Paani Samiti Members during the event. The Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Shri Yogi Adityanath will also be present on the occasion.

The Central government initiated the Jal Jeevan Mission to provide safe and adequate quantity drinking water to every rural household of the country by 2024 with the motto "Har Ghar Jal". The programme also implements source sustainability measures as mandatory elements, such as recharge and reuse through greywater management, water conservation, rainwater harvesting.

The Jal Jeevan Mission is based on a community approach to water and has extensive Information, Education and Communication as a key component of the mission. It looks to create a Jan Andolan for water, thereby making it everyone's priority.

There are about 19 crore households in India. Only 24% have Freshwater Household Tap Connections (FHTCs). The mission aims to provide 14, 33, 21,049 households with FHTC through the partnership of all stakeholders including inter alia the State Governments, Panchayat Raj Institutions and local communities.

PM Modi to lay the foundation stone for rural drinking water supply projects in UP on November 22

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that his government would invest Rs 3.5 lakh crore in five years to cater to the need of water for drinking and irrigation purposes, reported news agency ANI.

"I will put maximum emphasis in the next five year on the water under the Jal Jeevan Mission. We are planning to spend Rs 3.5 lakh crore in the next five years so that our mothers and sisters, and farmers don`t have to face the shortage of water. Our effort is to ensure that farmers do not have to rely only on weather," Modi was quoted as saying in an election rally.

The traditional water system in villages should be revamped and a new system should be developed where the household water is recycled and is used for irrigation, Modi said.

"It is imperative that we revive the old systems of water management, which used to exist in villages. We want to create systems that can help in recycling household water and which can be used for irrigation. And I`m hopeful that the country will be successful in doing so by 2024," said Modi.

Slamming the opposition parties, Modi said its leaders are busy fighting among themselves and cannot give stability to Haryana.

"When the BJP government in Haryana was taking decisive steps for the development, what was the opposition doing? They could not fight with us. So they were busy fighting among themselves. They destabilised their parties for self-interest. Can they give stability to Haryana," asked Modi.

He said that the opposition has no right to ask for votes in Haryana as it has given the share of the state water to Pakistan during its rule at the Centre.&nbsp;

He said that the "water over which Haryana farmers have the right will not flow into Pakistan now.

"The water over which Haryana farmers have the right was allowed to go to Pakistan. What right they have to seek the vote from you? But I am determined that the water over which you have the right will not flow to Pakistan now," said Modi.

The assembly elections in Haryana are scheduled to be held on October 21. The votes will be counted on October 24.
