Instead, it presents Ranaut as herself and in so many scenes she is just playing haughty star that she has become who blows her own trumpet at the drop of a hat. Even some of the dialogues seem to just pad up Kangana's recently created image of a self-made star who doesn't need anyone to prove her worth in the film industry.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The late Jayalalithaa was known for her ability to break into a largely male-dominated political arena and create her powerful position there- so much so that the men who at one point of time shunned her, bowed down to her in respect and fear as she became the CM. There is a lot of material available of the late politician and writer KV Vijayendra Prasad never really delves deeper and instead present the known facts in a more dramatised manner in 'Thalaivi'. The result is that the film never hits you or leaves an impact about the leader, instead, it presents Kangana in a larger than life persona. Rajat Arora's melodramatic lines just accentuate Kangana's star persona and does nothing to aid the actual story.&nbsp;</p>

The first half is spent in establishing the bond that the two shared and how Jayalalithaa as a newbie in the film industry was made comfortable by then the legend MGR. Their affair too is never explicitly detailed in the film and it is mostly suggestive, perhaps keeping in mind the sentiments attached to the two stalwarts. In one of the early scenes in the film, Jayalalithaa - as the leader of the opposition - is questioned about her relationship with the late leader and heckled in the state assembly by DMK party leaders. The scenes appear twice but nowhere does Kangana's character answer the burning question. In other occasions their love is explained with spiritual metaphors- 'God cannot be loved by one, God is loved by all," says MGR in one scene. In another Jayalalithaa compares herself to Radha, Lord Krishna's favourite consort.&nbsp;</p>

The screenplay mostly skirts around incidents and leaves a lot to the interpretation of the audience. From MGR and Jayalalithaa's mid-day meal schemes to their alliance with Congress to her campaigning while still recovering from a serious accident- all are shown but none in great detail.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While the film is about Kangana Ranaut playing Jayalalitha, it is Arvind Swami who shines the most as MGR and gets the late leader's mannerisms perfectly. It is also a delight to watch Swami in a full-fledged role after a long time. There is Madhoo who plays Janaki Amma and while her scenes are limited, pairing the former 'Roja' couple brings back memories of the 90s. The other actor who delivers is Raj Arora who plays MGR's right-hand man Veerappan and who dislikes Jayalalithaa's closeness with his leader. The other actors - especially the women- have limited screen time because only one woman is allowed to shine.&nbsp;</p>

Despite the prosthetics, the makeup - we get flashes Kangana the star, who delivers sermons and gyaan on social media often these days or who struts out of the airport waving at the camera with Z plus security surrounding her. <p>The actor-turned-politician, who passed away on December 5, 2016, due to cardiac arrest, is fondly referred to as 'Puratchi Thalaivi', which means 'revolutionary leader'.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Titled "Thalaivi" in Tamil and "Jaya" in Hindi, the biographical drama will be directed by Vijay, one of the top filmmakers from South who has helmed movies like "Madrasapattinam" and "Deiva Thirumagal".</p>

<p>"Jayalalithaa ji is one of the biggest female success stories of this century. She was a superstar and went on to become an iconic politician,it's a great concept for mainstream film. I am honoured to be a part of this mega project," Kangana said in a statement. Vijay said he is aware of the responsibility of making this film and the team will deal it with utmost care and honesty.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Briefing reporters about the deposition of Vijayabaskar before the Justice A Arumughaswamy Commission of Inquiry here, counsel for V K Sasikala, N Raja Senthoor Pandian said that the Minister made this submission related to foreign treatment during cross-examination.</p>

<p>Asked whether any minister at the October 19, 2016 cabinet meeting had spoken about shifting Jayalalithaa abroad for treatment, the Health Minister replied that such a topic did not come up for discussion, the counsel said.</p>

<p>One of the questions that came up in the proceedings before the Commission was whether treatment for Jayalalithaa at a hospital abroad was considered or not.</p>

<p>"Vijayabaskar replied that such a topic (on shifting her abroad for treatment) did not come up at the Cabinet meeting and there were no circumstances to warrant such a discussion," Pandian said.</p>

<p>Vijayabaskar, who was both examined and cross-examined Monday, said he had seen Jayalalithaa at close quarters when she was wheeled away for the tracheostomy procedure on October 7, 2016, at Apollo Hospital, according to Pandian.</p>

<p>On an Apollo doctor's statement to the Commission that Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam had seen Jayalalithaa on October 7, 2016, at the hospital, the Minister replied that the doctor's deposition would be correct, he said.</p>

<p>In the past, Ministers like Dindigul C Sreenivasan had said that they had no access to see the late leader during her 75-day hospitalisation.</p>

<p>The Minister's answers were also consistent with that of Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan's depositions on all aspects, including foreign treatment, Sasikala's counsel said.</p>

<p>A counsel for the Commission had alleged in December 2018 that Radhakrishnan colluded and conspired with Apollo Hospital and "inappropriate treatment" was provided to the late leader.</p>

<p>The panel counsel had also alleged that the senior health official was against taking Jayalalithaa abroad for treatment.</p>

<p>Both the hospital and the secretary had strongly refuted the allegations.</p>

<p>Vijayabaskar, in his brief remarks, told reporters that he extended his full cooperation to the Commission and answered all questions posed to him.</p>

<p>In September 2017, the Tamil Nadu government had constituted the Arumughaswamy Commission of Inquiry under the Commissions of Inquiry Act, 1952.</p>

Nithya Menen looks strikingly similar to young Jayalalitha in the first poster of 'The Iron Lady'

<p>The Apollo Hospitals today informed the Madras High Court that it does not have the biological samples of J Jayalalithaa collected during her treatment in 2016.</p>

<p>In an affidavit filed before Justice S Vaidyanathan, hearing a petition by a woman who claimed herself to be the biological daughter of Jayalalithaa, the hospital said all the collected samples had been used up completely during her treatment period.</p>

<p>It said Jayalalithaa's condition was challenging to treat due to multiple co-morbidities and in view of this all biological samples collected from her were used to run a battery of tests to rule out and/or confirm various medical conditions.</p>

<p>"I respectfully state that all biological samples collected from the late Chief Minister were used up completely during her treatment period...No biological samples belonging to the late Chief Minister are available with hospital as on date," the affidavit by a hospital official said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It was filed in response to a directive by the judge yesterday.</p>

<p>Jayalalithaa was admitted to the hospital on September 22, 2016 following complaints of fever and dehydration, but developed complications later. She died on December 5, 2016.</p>

<p>On February 23, the judge had issued notice to Apollo Hospitals on a sub-application by the petitioner, who sought a direction for a DNA test to establish her parentage.</p>

<p>The woman had claimed she had been given in adoption to Jayalalithaa's sister and her husband decades ago and she came to know about it from her foster father in March last year before he died.</p>

<p>With the hospital saying there was no biological samples of Jayalalithaa, her counsel submitted that DNA test can be done on Deepa, daughter of the late chief minister's brother J Jayaraman.</p>

<p>The judge posted the matter to June 4 for further hearing.</p>

<p>Deepa and her brother Deepak have submitted that the petitioner has to approach only the Civil Court as she had not furnished any proof in support of her claim.&nbsp;</p>

The Apollo Hospitals today informed the Madras High Court that it does not have the biological samples of J Jayalalithaa collected during her treatment in 2016. In an affidavit filed before Justice S Vaidyanathan, hearing a petition by a woman who claimed herself to be the biological daughter of Jayalalithaa, the hospital said all the collected samples had been used up completely during her treatment period. It said Jayalalithaa's condition was challenging to treat due to multiple co-morbidities and in view of this all biological samples collected from her were used to run a battery of tests to rule out and/or confirm various medical conditions. "I respectfully state that all biological samples collected from the late Chief Minister were used up completely during her treatment period...No biological samples belonging to the late Chief Minister are available with hospital as on date," the affidavit by a hospital official said. It was filed in response to a directive by the judge yesterday. Jayalalithaa was admitted to the hospital on September 22, 2016 following complaints of fever and dehydration, but developed complications later. She died on December 5, 2016. On February 23, the judge had issued notice to Apollo Hospitals on a sub-application by the petitioner, who sought a direction for a DNA test to establish her parentage. The woman had claimed she had been given in adoption to Jayalalithaa's sister and her husband decades ago and she came to know about it from her foster father in March last year before he died. With the hospital saying there was no biological samples of Jayalalithaa, her counsel submitted that DNA test can be done on Deepa, daughter of the late chief minister's brother J Jayaraman. The judge posted the matter to June 4 for further hearing. Deepa and her brother Deepak have submitted that the petitioner has to approach only the Civil Court as she had not furnished any proof in support of her claim.
