Israel is willing to decrease its original demand for the release of 40 hostages held by Hamas in exchange for a temporary ceasefire in Gaza, media reports said.

Israel is willing to decrease its original demand for the release of 40 hostages held by Hamas in exchange for a temporary ceasefire in Gaza, media reports said. Israel is now reportedly ready to negotiate for the release of 20 hostages after an offer proposed by Qatari, Egyptian and US negotiators was refused by the terror group, which may have released many abductees if finalised. It was reported by many Hebrew media sites on Thursday evening (April 25) that Israel is now willing to finalise a deal to release only 20 hostages in the first phase of the truce, as long as they are either women or men who are seriously ill and over 50 years old. The release of 40 hostages in those categories was envisioned in the last proposal sent to Hamas, however, the terror outfit denied keeping so many hostages alive in those categories. Also Read: Israel to go ahead with Rafah invasion even as Egypt warns of humanitarian crisis Because of the ongoing deadlock, Israel's war cabinet authorised the negotiating team on Thursday (April 25) to discuss a flexible approach to the truce with an Egyptian delegation. The Egyptian delegation will reach Tel Aviv for additional talks on the matter on Friday (Apr 26), said the Hebrew news sites. The Israeli negotiators in the earlier round insisted that 40 living hostages were falling under the category of female, elderly or sick and if Hamas said that this wasn’t true, then it should agree to release hostages from categories, which are men and soldiers under the age of 50, to meet the benchmark of 40. War cabinet discusses Rafah offensive amid truce talks Israel's war cabinet held a meeting at military headquarters in Tel Aviv on Thursday (April 25) as the country prepared for the Rafah offensive. Israel may agree with release of less than 40 hostages in first phase of truce: Reports

The US troops have started construction of a maritime pier off the coast of Gaza that aims to speed the flow of humanitarian aid into the enclave when it becomes operational in May.

In March, President Joe Biden announced the construction of a pier to aid in the delivery of humanitarian supplies to Gaza, responding to aid officials' requests for Israel to relax restrictions on land routes.

However, it's uncertain if this initiative will effectively boost the flow of aid, especially as international officials caution about the potential for famine in northern Gaza. Israel's six-month-long military campaign against Hamas has caused extensive damage to the densely populated Gaza Strip, leaving its 2.3 million residents in a humanitarian crisis.

A Biden administration official, speaking to reporters on condition of anonymity, said humanitarian aid coming off the pier will need to pass through Israeli checkpoints on land. That is despite the aid having already been inspected by Israel in Cyprus prior to being shipped to Gaza. Israel wants to prevent any aid from getting to Hamas fighters that boosts their war effort.

The possibility of checkpoints brings up concerns about potential delays, even after aid has landed. The United Nations has consistently voiced concerns about the difficulties in getting aid into Gaza and distributing it throughout the territory.

"I can confirm that US military vessels, to include the USNS Benavidez, have begun to construct the initial stages of the temporary pier and causeway at sea," Pentagon spokesperson Major General Patrick Ryder told reporters.

The pier will at first handle 90 trucks a day, but that number could go up to 150 trucks daily when it is fully operational. The United Nations said this week that the daily average number of trucks entering Gaza during April was 200 and that there had been a peak on Monday of 316.

The northern Gaza Strip remains at risk of famine, the UN deputy food chief said on Thursday (Apr 25), urging for an increased flow of aid and asking Israel to permit direct access from its southern Ashdod port to the Erez crossing.

In a statement, the Israeli military said it would provide security and logistics support for the pier.

An Israeli military brigade, which includes thousands of soldiers, along with Israeli Navy ships and Air Force would work to protect US troops who are setting up the pier.
