US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has urged Israel to come up with a post-war plan for Gaza and warned that the absent of it could trigger lawlessness chaos and a comeback by Hamas in the Enclave. Israel-Hamas war: Gaza war may continue through rest of year: Tzachi Hanegbi

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu is facing increasing pressure from his war cabinet as Israel's assault on Gaza continues. Many believe that he is not doing enough for Israel. On Wednesday, war cabinet observer MK Gadi Eisenkot accused Netanyahu of failing Israel in matters of both security and economy. He urged that elections be held by the end of the year, delivering a stark indictment of the war-time govt he is part of. Has Netanyahu lost his balance? Has personal political survival become more important for the Israeli Prime Minister than Israel itself?

Gravitas: Has Netanyahu lost the balance? Political survival more important for Bibi than country?

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's colleague in his cabinet has accused him of "failing miserably" as the country grapples with domestic, geo-economic and geopolitical consequences of war in Gaza amid relentless human rights violations in the blockaded Palestinian enclave.

Knesset member Gadi Eisenkot, an observer in Israel's war cabinet and a former military chief, said Netanyahu has failed miserably on security and economy fronts and that there must be elections before the end of this year.

The latest note of dissidence comes as Israel took control of the crucial Egypt-Gaza corridor that may potentially choke the limited aid supply route to the strip. Besides, Israeli attack on a Rafah camp — that killed about 45 civilians — have already led to global outcry against Israeli wartime heavy-handedness with an unprecedented humanitarian toll in the region.

Eisenkot's youngest son was killed in combat in Gaza Strip last year in December. He added that Netanyahu was misleading citizens with slogans of "total victory" against Hamas and choosing not to be realistic about the complexity of the war in Gaza that began last year on October 7 when Hamas militants stormed into southern Israel and killed about 1200 people and took more than 250 people hostage.

"Anyone who says that we will disband a few battalions in Rafah and then return the hostages is sowing a false illusion," he said. "It will take three to five years to stabilise [Gaza] and then many more years to build an alternative to Hamas."

There is growing global outrage over Israel's military offensive in Rafah. Yet, Israel has escalated its assault on the southern Gaza City, where about 1.3 million Palestinians had sought shelter before the operation began. The European Union is even considering sanctions against Israel. Despite widespread condemnation, President Joe Biden is not changing his policy toward Israel. US military is temporarily removing the humanitarian aid pier off Gaza's coast after the structure broke off, as per a statement by the Pentagon on Tuesday (May 28).

This comes as a section of the pier had detached and repairs to the pier are necessary before Washington continues to deliver the critical aid to Gazans.

"Over the next 48 hours, US forces will remove the pier from its anchored position on the coast and tow it back to the Israeli coastal city of Ashdod to begin repairs," Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh said.

This floating pier, part of the Joint Logistics Over-the-Shore (JLOTS) operation, was first announced on March 8 after President Joe Biden tasked the military with leading a temporary humanitarian aid mission.

It became operational on May 17 and costs an estimated $320 million for the first 90 days and involves about 1,000 US service members.

Pentagon spokesperson Singh outlined the repair timeline saying, "Centcom anticipates repairs to the pier to take approximately one week."

Vessels ran aground

The necessity for repairs arose after rough seas on May 25 caused three of the four vessels associated with the pier to run aground. In addition to this, the harsh sea conditions and a North African weather system caused part of the trident pier to detach from its anchored position.

However, Singh highlighted the pier's importance in aid delivery during the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

"The pier proved highly valuable in delivering aid to the people of Gaza. Thus, upon completion of the pier repair and reassembly, the intention is to re-anchor the temporary pier to the coast of Gaza and resume humanitarian aid to the people who need it most," she said.
