Iran's Khamenei Warns Israel After Hassan Nasrallah's Killing

Israelis rejoiced Saturday at the news that Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah had been killed while also offering mixed takes on whether this would make them safer in the long term.

Military officials announced on Saturday morning that Nasrallah, who headed Hezbollah for more than three decades, died in a Friday strike targeting the group's headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Even before Hezbollah officially confirmed his death on Saturday afternoon, Israelis on Tel Aviv's waterfront promenade said the news came as a welcome relief amid escalating clashes along the Israel-Lebanon border.

"Absolutely fantastic news, it should have been done a long time ago," said David Shalev, a resident of Israel's commercial hub.

Although he cast doubt on whether Nasrallah's killing would end the fighting in the north, he said it sent a clear message to Israel's foes in the region: "Don't screw with us."

Hezbollah began firing into northern Israel one day after Hamas's unprecedented attack on southern Israel last October 7 triggered the ongoing war in Gaza.

In recent days Israel has shifted the focus of its operations towards eliminating Hezbollah's military leadership and "cleaning" the northern border, from which more than 60,000 Israelis have been displaced for nearly a year.

The escalation brought heightened security risks to central Israel, with Hezbollah on Wednesday announcing it had launched a ballistic missile targeting the Israeli spy agency Mossad's headquarters near Tel Aviv.

In the coastal city of Rishon LeZion in central Israel, Shuli Diaz on Saturday called Friday's strike on Nasrallah "an amazing move".

She said she hoped the Hezbollah leader's death would bring peace after more than a year of war triggered by the October 7 attack.

Hezbollah's expanding arsenal presents a significant threat to Israel, as the militant group has reportedly amassed a vast stockpile of advanced weaponry, including precision-guided missiles and drones. This buildup is seen as a direct response to the ongoing tensions in the region and Israel's military actions. Analysts warn that Hezbollah's enhanced capabilities could lead to more lethal and accurate attacks, complicating Israel's defense strategies. The group’s arsenal not only increases the risk of escalation but also heightens fears of a larger conflict, as both sides remain on high alert. Israel's military leadership is closely monitoring these developments, preparing for potential confrontations as Hezbollah continues to strengthen its position along the Lebanese border.

Yemen's Houthis said on Friday in a statement that they had fired "a ballistic missile and a drone" deep into Israel.

"In support of Palestine and Lebanon, we carried out a military operation against an Israeli target in the Jaffa area, Tel Aviv, using a ballistic missile, and launched a drone attack on another vital Israeli target in the coastal Israeli city of Ashkelon," the statement, aired by the Houthi-run al-Masirah TV, quoted Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea as saying.

The two operations, occurring on Thursday night, "achieved their goals successfully," Sarea noted, vowing to continue strikes against Israeli targets to support the resistance of "brothers in Palestine and Lebanon," Xinhua news agency reported.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military confirmed earlier in a statement that militants in Yemen launched at least one missile toward Israel overnight between Thursday and Friday, setting off air raid sirens across central Israel, including Tel Aviv.

The army said the missile was "successfully" intercepted and that the details were still under review, reporting no casualties.
This latest Houthi attack on Tel Aviv follows two previous ones targeting central Israel - a drone attack in July that killed one person and a missile attack earlier this month that caused a fire in an empty area in Kfar Daniel, another location in the region, according to Israeli media outlets.

The Houthi group, which controls large swathes of northern Yemen, has been attacking "Israeli-linked" shipping near the country's coastline since November 2023, allegedly to support Palestinians in their conflict with Israelis.
