Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in his first speech after the US election, criticised the Biden administration for its policies and judgement regarding Israel's ongoing war against Hamas, Iran and its proxies.&nbsp;

Speaking at the Knesset plenum on Monday (Nov. 18), Netanyahu said, “The US had reservations and suggested that we not enter Gaza. It had reservations about entering Gaza City, Khan Younis, and, most critically, strongly opposed entry into Rafah,” The Times of Israel reported.&nbsp;

“President Biden told me that if we go in, we will be alone. He also said that he would stop shipments of important weapons to us. And so he did. A few days later, Blinken appeared and repeated the same things and I told him we will fight with our nails," the Israeli PM was reported saying.&nbsp;

Netanyahu further criticised the US response after Iran's drone and missile attacks on Israel.&nbsp;

“Again, we were told by our friend that there is no need to respond. And I said that sitting and not reacting is not acceptable, and we responded," The Times of Israel reported Netanyahu saying.&nbsp;

<h2>'A specific component damaged'</h2>

Netanyahu further claimed in his speech that Israel's late October attack on Iran damaged "a specific component" of the Islamic Republic's nuclear programme.

The PM said that the Israeli counterattack last month inflicted real damage on Iran’s ballistic missile production capability,&nbsp;and also affected its nuclear programme.

“It’s not a secret, it has been published&nbsp;that a certain component of their nuclear programme was hit in this attack," Netanyahu told the Israeli parliament.

He further added&nbsp;that Iran’s plan for a nuclear weapon is still on. “We’ve delayed it… but it has progressed. Iran has advanced its enrichment.&nbsp;The imperative to stop Iran’s march to the bomb is on us,” he said.

Israel-Lebanon War: Israeli Strikes Hits Beirut's Southern Suburbs

Around 70 per cent of Israelis want a hostage deal with Hamas, even if that requires ending the war, a poll by Channel 12 on Friday (Nov 15) suggested.&nbsp;

The poll asked Israelis what is more important, a hostage deal or continuing the war in Gaza?&nbsp;

Close to 69 per cent of Israelis said the hostage deal is more important whereas 20 per cent of respondents said continuing the war holds more importance.&nbsp;

A slim majority said in the poll that a hostage deal has not been yet on the table primarily because of political reasons.&nbsp;

The Times of Israel reported that even a few Likud voters, among 46 per cent, also said in the poll that they support a hostage deal that ends the war.&nbsp;

36 per cent of the respondents said they prefer that the war continues whereas 18 per cent said they were unsure.&nbsp;

The poll asked Israelis why they thought a hostage deal was still not on the table even after around thirteen months into the war since October 7, 2023. &nbsp;

52 per cent of respondents said according to them the prime reason behind this was politics.&nbsp;

Some 36 per cent said the deal had not been reached because of substantive reasons.&nbsp;

In October, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was reported telling Likud lawmakers that Israel could not accept Hamas' demand to end the war in exchange for the hostage deal, according to The Times of Israel.&nbsp;

Netanyahu claimed that a hostage deal would allow Hamas to retain in Gaza in some form.&nbsp;

But the Israeli prime minister is expected to make way for the deal due to the constant political pressure from far-right political partners to ignore which can make him lose power, The Times of Israel reported.&nbsp;

The poll also asked Israelis who could be the better replacement for Netanyahu.&nbsp;

Around 37 per cent of respondents said they would prefer former Israeli prime minister Naftali Bennett whereas 35 per cent remained Netanyahu supporter.&nbsp;

25 per cent of respondents said they preferred neither of them as Israel's ideal prime minister.&nbsp;

When the poll asked who was more suitable as prime minister, Netanyahu or National Unity Party leader Benny Gantz, 37 per cent picked Netanyahu and 30 per cent picked Gantz, while&nbsp;30 per cent chose neither of them.&nbsp;

The poll results came amid the unverified reports that Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara may try to sideline Netanyahu from the post of prime minister as he will undergo a corruption trial next month.

The poll had a question on Netanyahu's corruption trial as well in which it asked Israelis if they thought Netanyahu could serve as prime minister and manage his criminal case at the same time.

Around 50 per cent said he could not, but 42 per cent said he could manage both.&nbsp;

Nearly 70% Israelis favour hostage deal over continuing Gaza war: Poll

A senior Hamas official said Friday (Nov 15) the Palestinian militant group was “ready for a ceasefire” in besieged Gaza. Hamas political bureau member Bassem Naim told news agency AFP that he wanted US President-elect Donald Trump to press Israel to “end the aggression”.

“Hamas is ready to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip if a ceasefire proposal is presented and on the condition that it is respected” by Israel, said the Hamas official. “We call on the US administration and Trump to pressure the Israeli government to end the aggression,” he added.

Naim added that he was in favour of a proposal that would achieve two things:

<ol>
	<li>A definitive ceasefire in the Gaza</li>
	<li>Withdrawal of the Israeli military from the Palestinian territory</li>
</ol>

Naim’s statement comes after the latest round of negotiations collapsed in mid-October. Israel has long maintained it will not agree to longer truces, with more disagreements revolving around the future role of Hamas and Israel’s military presence in Gaza.

Hamas ‘ready for ceasefire’; top official requests Trump to press Israel for peace

The United Nations has stated that Israel's actions in Gaza may be consistent with reports of genocide, amid escalating violence in the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict. The UN’s comments come after increasing concern over civilian casualties and the destruction of infrastructure in Gaza. Israel has denied the allegations, defending its military operations as necessary to combat terrorism.

The darling of most American media until November 5, Kamala Harris is suddenly off the headlines. But she will go down in history as the valiant fighter who came tantalisingly&nbsp;close to becoming the first woman US president.

Had she won&nbsp;against Republican President-elect Donald Trump, Harris would have also been the first Asian and Indian-American to occupy the White House.

That was not to be.

One wonders why she lost the election.

While I wrote here earlier that she is unlikely to win (link below), the 226 electoral votes she got against Donald Trump's 312 – the majority mark being 270 – is quite impressive for a late-start campaign.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/opinions/kamala-harris-for-president-after-biden-exits-race-vice-president-enters-what-are-her-chances-743300">Also read:&nbsp;Kamala Harris for president: After Biden exits, his vice president enters race, but can she win?</a>

That late start was indeed one of the key issues.

Even some Democrats must have felt that she leapfrogged the proper process – the Democratic primaries – and was thrust into the limelight when incumbent president and Democratic nominee Joe Biden pulled out after days of inner-party squabbles.

<h2>How the Democrats ruined it for Kamala Harris</h2>

If she were in the Democratic primaries, could her fate have been different?

That's a big if.&nbsp;

Suppose Harris was on the ballot for primaries. Even while being the incumbent vice president, she would have had to criticise Biden, and by extension, her own government.&nbsp;

As it happened, there were no serious contenders against Biden since he formally announced his re-election bid.

His Democratic primary opponents: author Marianne Williamson, Representative Dean Phillips and Robert F Kennedy Jr, exited the race one way or the other.

RJF Jr, from the hallowed and mostly Democratic Kennedy family, was the only temporary jolt for the party machine. Having started as a Democratic contender, RFK Jr switched to independent and eventually pulled out, only to support Trump, and is being rewarded with a role in the upcoming Trump administration.

Biden had an impressive number of delegates going into the Democratic Party Convention in August.

But a lot happened in July.

It was a tight situation for Democrats when, having gone into election mode after Biden won the required delegates to be declared the presidential candidate at the convention, they realised the 81-year-old was not a good pick, after all.

Biden's endless gaffes, slips and falls made many question&nbsp;his physical and mental capabilities to run for the top office once again.

His fumbling and rambling answers during the presidential debate with Trump in June made him look weak.&nbsp;

And then, Democrats went into a tizzy, creating the unprecedented situation of pressurising a candidate, who had done one presidential debate with the opponent,&nbsp;to exit the race.

Media reports about Biden's failing health followed, and Democrat donors threatened to pull campaign cash if Biden didn't exit.

Despite issuing nice-looking health report cards and his own assurances that he's fit to run for office again, many Democrat voters were still not convinced.

Or so the party thought.

Nancy Pelosi, the Democrat dame and speaker emeritus, as well as other senior leaders including, reportedly, ex-president Barack Obama, tried to convince Biden to quit the race.

Eventually, he relented, but in hindsight, that was too late, too little.

<h2>Harris campaign: A dash towards defeat</h2>

While there were reports of a 'palace coup' in which Harris was already putting in place a team in case Biden decided not to run, the time left for a robust campaign was too little.

In what raised many eyebrows, Biden 'transferred' all the delegates he had amassed to Kamala and her running mate Tim Walz and the Democratic Convention named them the candidates in a&nbsp;&nbsp;'roll-call nomination.'

The whole thing was mocked widely, particularly in the right-wing media, who painted Harris (it seems successful) as an imposter.

Having a rather forgettable running mate in Walz didn't help matters either for Harris.&nbsp;

Her media blitzkrieg of unusual appearances at TV and web shows were seen by many as ambushes.

The host of Call Her Daddy, a rather non-political show, was criticised for having invited her as a guest.

Fox News ran a campaign on how Kamala didn't address an open press conference, instead choosing to do one-on-one interviews seen as stage-managed affairs.

Also read:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/what-kamala-harris-said-in-concession-speech-while-trump-plans-first-100-days-in-white-house-774159">Kamala Harris delivers defiant concession speech as Trump wins 2024 presidential election</a>

And then, there were the 'word salads'.

Many of her answers to serious questions were rather convoluted, particularly America's support to Israel in its war against Hamas, and to Ukraine against Russia.

On the Israel question, it emerged that CBS 60 Minutes edited out parts of her interview – or re-recorded it &nbsp;– to make the answer more palatable.

Trump and his surrogates went to town to expose her on these.&nbsp;

Trump, whose track record is anti-war – not because of any noble ideal, but because he doesn't want to fight in or pay for wars where American interests are not directly under attack – criticised US funding to Ukraine's war efforts.

He kept on saying in campaign speeches that he is the only one who could end the wars.&nbsp;

Many uncommitted voters, part of the silent majority, appear to have believed him.

Arab- and Muslim-Americans were particularly riled by the Biden administration's failure to stop the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, which was invaded by Israel after the October 7 terror attack by Hamas.

The Harris campaign's communication efforts were annoying at best and outrageous at worst.

They couldn't advise her not to laugh out loud so much.

That led to 'cackling Kamala' jokes and memes, which Trump and his supporters exploited to the hilt.

There were gems like the advert appearing to suggest women reject Black men if they are not voting Democrat.

In their speeches for Harris addressed to African Americans, Barack Obama and his wife Michelle appeared to come across as condescending.

It was like, here are some entitled African-American leaders telling the Blacks how to live their lives, do their jobs, and vote.

That may have flipped many Blacks to vote for Trump.

On the economy, she appeared out of touch with the cost of living reality of middle-class and working-class Americans, despite insisting on all possible occasions that she comes from a middle-class background.

As practically the immigration tzar of the Biden administration, Harris had not much to boast of.

Many Latin American voters, it appears, may have voted for Trump because they also share the same worries and fears about migration from lawless lands in the continent as much as the white majority who Trump considers his base.

Trump succeeded in making Harris look weak on illegal migration from the southern border, as caravans of asylum seekers poured in.

That leaves us with women and young voters.&nbsp;

Quite stunningly, it emerged as per exit polls that fewer women voted for Harris than they did for Biden in 2020.

Abortion, the main issue Democrats thought would galvanise women towards Harris, did not work.

Neither did Harris' efforts to paint Trump as a dictator and anti-woman.

It might seem improbable, but Trump's escape from an assassination attempt, and his non-committal stance on banning Chinese-owned TikTok may have drawn more youngsters to him.

The TikTok ban move by the Biden administration was a risky one politically. The Democrats didn't understand how much American kids loved the short video-sharing platform. For them, it was a form of communication and self-expression for a generation.

While these may not be the only reasons, it is clear that Trump was preferred over Harris by many in Gen Z and millennials.&nbsp;

Also, note that there was an effort ahead of the Democratic primary to put 'uncommitted' as an option.

This means many of the Democratic voters were not ready for Biden.

It is quite possible that some of them may have voted for Trump.

In summary, while much of the reasons for her defeat had to do with circumstances, Harris didn't help her own campaign.

Now as per custom, the vice president faces the ignominy of signing the document that will declare Trump as the next president after the joint Congress session on January 6, right on the fourth anniversary of the Capitol riots instigated by Trump in rejection of the 2020 election outcome.

He kept on saying in campaign speeches that he is the only one who could end the wars. That leaves us with women and young voters. While these may not be the only reasons, it is clear that Trump was preferred over Harris by many in Gen Z and millennials. Israel's opposition leaders have called for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to step down, declaring him unfit to serve due to his controversial handling of various national issues, including the ongoing conflict with Gaza and internal political divisions. The United Nations removed a quilt panel artwork after facing backlash claiming it called for the extermination of Israel. As per Fox News reports, the painting had a map of Israel without the West Bank or Gaza partition along with the Palestinian flag. On the left side of the map in the painting, the phrase "From the river to the sea" was written followed by the right side that has the other part of the phrase that said "will be free". The phrase "From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free" from the 1960s has become a slogan for Palestine supporters against the Israeli occupation in Gaza after the October 7th attack that sparked the Israel-Hamas war. The display was part of an exhibition called "Peace Flags" which was a way to "re-purpose fashion waste for positive impact," the UN said. The UN told Fox News that a staff member informed the organisation a few displays, along with the one with the phrase, could not be displayed. After which the painting was kept covered in the second week of October but "someone removed those covers" earlier this week. He further added, "After firmly addressing the UN leadership this exhibition was fixed, and these antisemitic drawings were removed from the walls. We will stand up for truth, and each time we witness acts of antisemitism and hypocrisy, we will confront them head-on." (With inputs from agencies)

An Israeli airstrike in northern Gaza on Monday (November 04) night killed at least 20 people, most of whom were women and children, claimed Palestinian authorities on Tuesday.

The strike hit a residence in Beit Lahiya, a town close to Israel’s border, where several families who had been displaced were taking shelter, said local media reports.

The Israeli military said that the target was a weapons storage site used by a militant. They added that “numerous steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians.”

According to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry’s emergency services, the victims included eight women and six children. Additional airstrikes across Gaza on Tuesday morning killed another 10 people, health officials confirmed.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) have ordered a full evacuation of Beit Lahiya, along with the nearby town of Beit Hanoun and the densely populated Jabaliya refugee camp.

Israel’s opposition has accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of not being transparent about the Israel Defense Forces’ casualties in the ongoing war with Hamas in Gaza. Opposition leader Yair Lapid claimed Monday (Oct 29) that more than 12,000 soldiers have been affected to date since the war started on October 7 last year. "Eleven thousand soldiers were injured and 890 others killed,” Lapid claimed.

The figure suggested by Lapid is slightly above the official death toll of 772 soldiers; whereas the government says around 5,100 soldiers have been injured.

"There are limits to how much we accept the alternative facts,” Lapid said, arguing that his figures are "correct".

He also warned that the number of casualties will only increase if the Netanyahu government “doesn’t do anything”.
