"When I said a couple of weeks ago that the IPL should be stopped this year, there were emotions behind it. And it was that there is a national catastrophe that is taking place in India. People are dying. And I made the appeal because there were 4 lakh cases being reported a day. During such times, IPL cannot take place, the pomp and show cannot take place," Akhtar said on his YouTube channel.

"I didn’t have a problem with people not making money. People have been making money since 2008. If they don’t make money for a year, what trouble will they get into? People are dying and you cannot have pomp and show. It’s a national disaster. So as a neighbour, I was requesting that the IPL should be stopped."

Akhtar also pointed out that bio-secure bubbles are not the way going forward. He pointed out the flaws of bio-bubbles during PSL and then pointed out the similar outcome during IPL.&nbsp;

"IPL was never viable. We made a bio-secure bubble in the PSL and it completely flopped. India tried and the same happened there. In UAE and England, we would have had it. Over here, even people working in hotels are not safe. They don’t remain in bio-secure bubble. International cricket can take place in a bubble, but not franchise cricket because the entire world comes. The IPL is not a small event," Akhtar added.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday officially announced that the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 stands&nbsp;suspended till further notice due to the evolving global health concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.&nbsp;

The increased suspension of IPL 2020 comes after the lockdown measures implemented by the Government of India to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic which has wreaked havoc not only in India but across the world. After going through the current situation, the IPL Governing Council of the BCCI came to a conclusion that suspending the 13th edition of IPL, until further notice, is the best possible way to move forward.

BCCI, in the statement released on Thursday, stated that the health and safety of the nation and everyone involved in the game remain its top priority while adding that franchise owners, broadcasters, sponsors and all the stakeholders came to a general conclusion that the tournament will only commence when it is safe to do so.

The Indian cricket board further stated that it will continue to monitor and review the situation regarding a possible start date and will continue to take guidance from the Government of India, State Governments and other State Regulatory bodies.

The health and safety of the nation and everyone involved in our great sport remains our top priority and as such, the BCCI along with the Franchise Owners, Broadcaster, Sponsors and all the Stakeholders acknowledge that the IPL 2020 season will only commence when it is safe and appropriate to do so.&nbsp;
