The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have hit the stores in India on September 18. What followed were hours-long queues and massive crowds outside the Apple stores as people rushed to get their hands on the newly launched device. But amid the launch-day excitement, some buyers said they were making significant financial commitments to purchase the new phones. People travelled to different cities, and some even sold gold just to buy the phone.According to an India Today Tech report, a Delhi man said that he sold gold to buy an iPhone 18 Pro for his wife at the Apple Store in DLF Mall of India in Noida. The man was among those waiting outside the store before it opened at 8 am. He said he wanted to surprise his wife with the phone. Another man at the store had travelled from Punjab to buy an iPhone 18 Pro Max for himself and an iPhone 18 Pro for his fiancée. They had been waiting outside the store since 6 am and reportedly spent over Rs 3.5 lakh on the two phones.According to the Apple website, the latest models can be purchased through their online store and six retail outlets across the country.
Festive shopping faces a price test
The launch comes as India’s wider consumer-electronics market enters the festive shopping season with prices under pressure. Rising memory and component costs have pushed up prices of smartphones, laptops and other electronic goods, while analysts expect higher prices to weigh on upgrade volumes.According to a Moneycontrol report, Amazon India has also acknowledged some softness in electronics volumes. The company has signalled that rising prices are encouraging consumers to hold on to existing devices for longer. The company expects electronics sales to grow in value during the festive period, even as longer upgrade cycles affect volumes. Amazon is therefore focusing on affordability through exchange offers, EMI and no-cost EMI options during the festive sales season.

Why Apple is making the Dynamic Island smaller

Foxconn Technology Group, the largest manufacturer of Apple’s iPhone, has recalled hundreds of Chinese engineers and technicians from its production facilities in India. The move is expected to hamper the tech giant’s plans to ramp up its production in India. The withdrawal of Chinese staff, who are critical to production line setup and technical oversight, comes amid the rising tensions between the nations. The move will affect Apple’s production facilities in southern India, as only Taiwanese support personnel remain onsite. According to a Bloomberg report, the majority of the Chinese workers deployed at the company’s facilities in India were told to return two months ago. Since then, more than 300 workers have left the plants. It is not clear why the Chinese staff was recalled. Earlier this year, Bloomberg reported that “officials in Beijing verbally encouraged regulatory agencies and local governments to curb technology transfers and equipment exports to India and Southeast Asia.” The move is seen as discouraging companies from shifting manufacturing out of China. Foxconn’s move to recall Chinese employees could affect the production of the latest iPhone 17, of which the company plans to expand manufacturing in India. However, no major impact has been seen yet, the Bloomberg report said. However, “assembly line efficiency could suffer during the critical ramp-up period for next-generation iPhone production,” it added. Beijing’s strategy is said to extend beyond the recall of personnel. It also includes restricting the export of specialised equipment and technical expertise essential for the manufacturing of high-end electronics. “China’s actions come as countries like India and Vietnam aggressively court global technology companies seeking to diversify their supply chains away from Chinese dependence,” Bloomberg reported. Earlier, Apple CEO Tim Cook underscored the importance of Chinese technical talent in the supply chain of the iPhone. “The irreplaceable expertise of Chinese assembly workers,” he said, is not only about cost advantages but “fundamental to maintaining production standards.” Top intelligence sources told CNN-News18 that the move is part of China’s plan to foil India’s aim of becoming a global manufacturing hub. This may also impact India’s reputation in the world as a reliable supply chain partner. India accounts for about 20 per cent of the global iPhone production, which marks an impressive shift given that the large-scale manufacturing only started four years earlier in the country. Apple is aiming to produce most of its US-bound iPhones in India by the end of 2026.

How Nokia went from market king to cautionary tale: Explainer
The years of dominance
At the start of the 2000s, Nokia was the undisputed leader in mobile phones. Known for durable hardware and long-lasting batteries, it held more than 40 per cent of the global market. The Finnish brand’s simple menu design and affordable handsets put mobile communication within reach for millions. Nokia’s strong supply chain and large patent portfolio further cemented its position as the world’s top phone maker.
Missed software shift
Nokia’s success was built on hardware expertise, yet that strength masked a serious weakness: software. The company relied on its ageing Symbian operating system, which was hard for developers to use and slow to update. When Apple introduced the iPhone in 2007, consumers discovered touchscreens, a fluid interface and an easy-to-use app store. Soon after, Google’s Android offered manufacturers a free, flexible platform that quickly attracted both developers and users. Inside Nokia, decision-making became slow. Separate business units competed for influence, and leaders hesitated to abandon profitable legacy models. Engineers produced promising prototypes, but many never reached shops because managers feared upsetting existing product lines. By underestimating the importance of a rich software ecosystem, Nokia lost ground just as the smartphone era was taking shape.
Fall and Microsoft rescue attempt
In a late effort to catch up, Nokia struck a deal with Microsoft in 2011, adopting Windows Phone for its new Lumia range. Reviewers praised the hardware, yet the limited app catalogue failed to attract customers already invested in iOS and Android. Market share continued to slide; however, in 2014 Microsoft bought Nokia’s handset division for about 7 billion US dollars to rescue it. Within two years, Microsoft also exited the mass-market phone business, ending Nokia’s reign in mobile devices. Nokia has since reinvented itself as a major player in 5G network equipment and digital infrastructure, but its former dominance in consumer handsets is gone. The episode shows that even an industry leader with strong cash reserves can falter when it reacts too slowly to disruptive change.
Lessons for today’s tech firms
Nokia’s story underlines three key points: Hardware alone is not enough; users value seamless software and services.Speed matters; large firms must cut internal barriers to act quickly.Past success does not secure the future; continuous adaptation is essential.

Nokia was once the top phone brand, however it failed to keep up with smartphones. It stuck to old software while Apple and Android moved ahead. Slow decisions and missed chances led to its fall. Now, it focuses on 5G, not phones. A lesson in staying up to date.

How Nokia collapsed and why it couldn’t compete with the iPhone and other smartphones?

Apple is going all in on India—and it’s not just about production anymore. It’s about survival. Between March and May this year, a staggering 97 per cent of iPhones exported by Apple supplier Foxconn from India were shipped to the United States, according to exclusive customs data reported by Reuters. That’s nearly double the usual average and signals a strategic redirection: Apple is now using India as its primary export base to dodge rising US tariffs on China.
India to US: A one-way iPhone highway
The numbers are eye-opening. Foxconn’s iPhone exports from India touched $3.2 billion in just three months. Almost all of it went to the US—up from a 2024 average of just 50 per cent. And May 2025 alone saw exports worth nearly $1 billion, marking the second-biggest monthly shipment ever, after the March peak of $1.3 billion. This shift underscores how Apple is repositioning India not just as a backup to China, but as a front-line base to serve its most lucrative market.
Trump’s new tariffs trigger supply chain panic
At the heart of this pivot lies a political shockwave. US President Donald Trump announced a 55 per cent tariff on Chinese goods earlier this week, escalating the trade standoff with Beijing. India, in contrast, faces only a 10 per cent baseline duty—though it’s still lobbying Washington to scrap a proposed 26 per cent ‘reciprocal’ levy, which Trump had temporarily put on hold. Caught in the crossfire, Apple is racing to protect its bottom line. With over 60 million iPhones sold annually in the US, staying dependent on Chinese manufacturing would spell crippling price hikes for American consumers.
From Chennai to California: Apple speeds things up
Apple isn’t just shifting where it builds—it’s overhauling how fast it delivers. To accelerate India-based exports, Apple chartered cargo planes to fly out billions of dollars’ worth of iPhones—including the latest iPhone 13, 14, 16 and 16e models—directly to the US. The company has also pushed for faster customs clearance at Chennai airport, lobbying authorities to cut processing times from 30 hours to just 6 hours, Reuters had earlier reported.
India’s rise—and its cost
Analysts say the export boom is just the beginning. “We expect iPhones made in India to account for 25 to 30 per cent of global shipments this year, up from 18 per cent in 2024,” said Prachir Singh, senior analyst at Counterpoint Research, quoted by Reuters. But India’s rise as a smartphone hub still faces hurdles. High duties on imported components continue to inflate production costs, limiting India’s appeal as a full-scale manufacturing alternative to China.
Trump vs Apple
Despite the export gains, Apple isn’t exactly winning praise from Washington. In May, Trump publicly criticised Apple CEO Tim Cook for expanding in India. “We’re not interested in you building in India. India can take care of themselves. We want you to build here,” Trump reportedly told Cook, as cited by Reuters. The message is clear: Washington wants iPhones made in America. But for now, India is Apple’s best bet to keep prices stable in its largest market. Apple’s India strategy has taken on new urgency. Once seen as a slow but steady ‘China plus one’ option, India is now the epicentre of Apple’s trade war survival strategy. With production lines humming and exports climbing, the world’s most valuable company is betting big on Indian soil—even if it ruffles feathers in the White House. (With inputs from the agencies)
