Rakesh Ranjan Lal, Deputy Inspector General of the Border Security Force (BSF) in the Gokul Nagar sector of Tripura, has expressed concern over new ganja plantations in forest areas along India's border with Bangladesh.

According to a senior BSF official, the volume of new plantations is growing in lockstep with the BSF's efforts to discover, seize, and destroy them.&nbsp;

Lal said at a press conference at sector headquarters, "Ganja plantation is a major concern in the forest zone.We are putting forth our best effort.In the forest areas, our success rate in detecting and seizing Ganja is higher.At the same time, new plantations are being established at a rapid rate.As a result, we must establish a balance and confront the border issue."&nbsp;

On being asked whether the BSF is eager to devise any special technique to fight this problem, he said, "Definitely, we have enough technical backup to fight this out but I have reservations to divulge all these things in front of the press.

"He had also appreciated the role of the Bangladesh border`s guarding force in battling the border crimes and said that the relations between both the forces had been "excellent" so far.&nbsp;

"Both the forces have their own limitations but we work in close coordination to control border crimes", said Lal.

"In the year 2021, smuggled commodities like ganja, illegal syrup, narcotic drugs, animals, and other miscellaneous articles worth over Rs 270 million were confiscated," the BSF DIG stated, presenting details of the recently conducted operations.&nbsp;

"In the series of such operations, he said, acting on specific BSF intelligence input, on December 28, 2021 in the evening hours, BSF troops successfully seized 29,580 Yaba tablets of estimated market value of Rs 1,47,90,000 near Indo-Bangladesh Border Fence, behind Lucherbari school under Anandpur, Sonamura, of Sepahijala district.Besides that, he added, on the intervening night of December 28 and 29 BSF troops also succeeded in seizing various other contraband items having collective market value of Rs. 15,78,138.Apart from that, the BSF troops also detained four Bangladeshi nationals and an Indian tout from Srimantapur border outpost area.

"Further, on specific BSF intelligence input, troops of Srimantapur (BOP) foiled a trans-border infiltration attempt and apprehended four Bangladeshi Nationals along with an Indian tout. During preliminary questioning, they revealed their identity as Abdul Jalil, Helena Begum, Baby Akhtar, Md Jakharia, all residents of Surjya Nagar, under Bangladesh`s Commilla district. An Indian tout Rafikul Islam was also detained during the same operation. An FIR has been lodged and all the apprehended persons were handed over to the local police", he added.

Fresh ganja cultivation on forest land near Indo-Bangladesh border cause of concern: BSF

The government informed the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that a total of Rs 1138.48 crore has been spent in fencing the International Border between India and Bangladesh during the last five years, reported news agency ANI.&nbsp;

The total length of the International Border is 4096.70 km and fencing has been completed for 2803 km so far, the Lok Sabha was informed.

The probable date of completion is December 2020, the report added.&nbsp;

The aforementioned information was given by the Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai in a written reply to a question in the Lower House of Parliament.

"The schemes for creation of border infrastructure works, on Indo-Bangladesh Border, like fence, road, floodlight and Border Out-Posts (BOPs) are in progress. Border guarding forces conduct regular patrolling, lay nakas and establish observation posts and carry out anti tunnelling exercise to stop illegal infiltration," Rai said.

"However, illegal migrants are able to enter in a clandestine and surreptitious manner, mainly due to difficult riverine terrain in parts of the international border with Bangladesh which are not amenable to physical fencing," he stated.

Between 2014 and 2019, the number of infiltrators apprehended in West Bengal reduced to 379 from 2,260.&nbsp;

In Assam, the numbers came down from 101 to 94 while in Meghalaya, it decreased from 64 to 11.&nbsp;

In Mizoram, the number of infiltrators apprehended has been reduced to seven from eight and in Tripura, the numbers lowered to 101 to 94.&nbsp;

"On the intervening night of 10/11 July, a group of around 25 smugglers from Bangladesh made a forcible attempt to smuggle about 10-15 cattle into Bangladesh through Border Out Post-Angrail near Bangaon, 64th Battalion of BSF in North 24 Parganas. BSF troops deployed intercepted &amp; challenged," said a release by BSF.

"They directed high beam light on BSF Constable Anisur Rehman and lobbed one country made a bomb which blasted near him. The Constable fired one round of non-lethal PAG gun towards smugglers. Smugglers lobbed another country made bomb towards him which blasted on his right hand," the release added.

"Constable Anisur Rehman was evacuated to Govt Hospital Bangaon and later to Medica Hospital, Kolkata. His right hand was amputated. However, as per intelligence report, one Bangladeshi smuggler had sustained an injury but managed to flee away to Bangladesh," the release further said.

"Two Pilot projects have been taken up to replace the existing "old design/composite fencing" with a new "anti-cut and anti-rust" modular fencing (New Design Fence).&nbsp;

While the pilot project for the construction of New Design Fence in 3 km border length in Assam has been completed, another pilot project in 7.18 km border length in Punjab has been approved and work has been awarded.

It has been decided to deploy technological solutions in the form of Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System (CIBMS), in difficult terrain on Indo-Pakistan Border (IPB) and Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB).

The CIBMS involves integration of manpower, sensors, networks, intelligence and command and control solutions and includes inter alia Electro-Optic Sensors (high-resolution day and night cameras), Radars and other devices.
