At the time of the gruesome incident, Rathee was accompanied by his nephew Rajesh, according to media reports. Rajesh was reportedly sitting in the front seat of the car when Rathee was shot, while the killer was said to have been sitting in the rear seat.&nbsp;

The assailants, according to media reports, told his nephew that they were “sparing his life” so he could return home and inform everyone about the attack.&nbsp;

As of Monday, the police did not have any definitive leads but are reportedly reviewing CCTV camera footage from nearby areas in a bid to identify the shooters.&nbsp;

A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against four people – Naresh Kaushik, Ramesh Rathi, Sathish Rathi, and Rahul, said Haryana Police officials, earlier on Monday.&nbsp;

“We are collecting evidence from all CCTV cameras and also checking the suspected vehicle,” said Jhajjar DSP Shamsher Singh.&nbsp;

He added, “We have registered an FIR on the basis of the complaint received. Five teams have been constituted with 2 DSPs to arrest the accused. Investigation is underway. We are collecting physical and scientific evidence.”&nbsp;

<h2>CBI probe to be conducted</h2>

On Monday, the Haryana home minister said that a CBI probe will be conducted into the murder of the INLD chief.&nbsp;

This comes after many in the opposition parties, including senior INLD leader Abhay Chautala accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government of neglecting to provide sufficient security to Rathee despite knowing the threat to his life.&nbsp;

Chautala, on Monday, also demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Home Minister Vij.&nbsp;

“The two-time MLA, who is our state unit chief, was not provided with security. In writing, representations had been made to senior police officers and state home minister that he was facing threats and should be provided with security,” said the senior INLD leader.&nbsp;

“If the House is only satisfied with a CBI probe, then I assure the members that we will hand over the case to the CBI,” Vij said in the Haryana Assembly on Monday.&nbsp;

He also noted that saying that the entire law and order machinery of the state has collapsed is incorrect.&nbsp;

Haryana opposition leader Nafe Singh Rathee, who was the state president of the Indian National Lok Dal, and a party worker were killed when unidentified assailants came in a car and sprayed bullets on their SUV in Bahadurgarh near Delhi on Sunday, a senior party leader said.

Three private gunmen hired by Rathee for security also suffered injuries in the attack, said reports.

The attack, which came weeks before the Lok Sabha elections, raised political temperature and drew sharp reactions from opposition parties, which alleged a breakdown in law and order in the BJP-ruled state.

Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij said he spoke to officials and ordered them to take immediate action in the matter.

INLD leader Abhay Chautala told PTI news agency that Rathee and a party worker accompanying him were shot dead.

Three private gunmen, whom Rathee had hired for security, also received injuries, Chautala said, adding, "No police security had been given to him."

Chautala later visited the hospital in Bahadurgarh where the bodies were kept.

Speaking to reporters there, he demanded a CBI probe into the incident.

Rathee, aged around 70, was travelling in an SUV when the assailants, who were in a car, attacked him in Bahadurgarh town in Jhajjar district.

"A volley of bullets was sprayed at him," Chautala said.

Doctors at the hospital said that Rathee had suffered injuries in neck, stomach, spine and thigh and suffered heavy blood loss.

Rathee was elected MLA from Bahadurgarh twice in 1996 and 2005. 
 
Rathee himself faced a series of criminal charges including cheating, breach of trust, forgery, and criminal conspiracy, among others.

In January 2023, the Haryana Police filed an FIR against Rathee and five others in connection with the alleged suicide of local BJP leader Jagdish Numberdar.&nbsp; 
 
A lookout circular was issued by the Jhajjar district police to prevent Rathee from leaving the country.&nbsp; 
 
As per reports, police suspect the involvement of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and his close aide Kala Jathedi in&nbsp;the fatal attack on Rathee&nbsp;and initial inquiries point to some property disputes.

Chautala accused the government of failing to provide Rathee with security despite there being a threat to his life and demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Home Minister Anil Vij.

"The two-time MLA, who is our state unit chief, was not provided with security. In writing, representations had been made to senior police officers and state home minister that he was facing threats and should be provided with security," he said.

"Rathee had earlier told me that that he was informed by some police personnel that he faces threat. Later, I also spoke to SP Jhajjar over the phone and brought this to his notice....Had he been provided with security, such a situation would not have arisen," Chautala said.

He also said that law and order has broken down in Haryana and that has been proved yet again.

Jhajjar Superintendent of Police Arpit Jain told reporters that teams of the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) and the Special Task Force (STF) of the police were looking into the incident.

"Multiple teams are probing. We are probing all angles and we will try to arrest the accused soon," he said.

The opposition Congress and Aam Aadmi Party also hit out at the Manohar Lal Khattar government over the incident.

Senior Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda while expressing grief at Rathee's killing, said, "The news of INLD state president Nafe Singh Rathee being shot dead in Haryana is very sad. This reflects the law and order of the state...Today no one is feeling safe in the state."

Another senior Congress leader, Kumari Selja, alleged that anarchy has increased so much in the state that fearless miscreants fired several rounds of bullets at Rathee.

The BJP has created a jungle raj in the state, she alleged.

The by-poll was necessitated following the death of INLD MLA Hari Chan Middha, whose son Krishna Middha recently joined the BJP and is the saffron party's candidate for the byelection. The INLD is banking on Umed Redhu to retain the seat.

The JJP has put its weight behind Digvijay Chautala, the younger son of jailed leader Ajay Singh Chautala, who broke away from the INLD and floated the party.

Twenty-one candidates including two women are in the fray.

The polling began at 7 am and will continue till 5 pm.

In the final two hours of polling, there was a rush outside booths, especially in rural parts of the assembly constituency, as voters queued up to exercise their franchise.

Officials here said 15 per cent polling was recorded in the first two hours and by 3 pm, the poll percentage had crossed 60 per cent.

"The poll percentage at 3 pm was 60.12," an official said, adding that no untoward incident was reported.

Nearly 1.7 lakh people, including 80,556 women, are eligible to vote, the officials said.

There are 71 polling booths in rural areas of this constituency and 103 booths fall in urban areas.

Nearly 3,000 police personnel were put on duty, a senior police official said.

Besides,500 home guards and over 200 personnel drawn from the CRPF and the Rapid Action Force were also deployed.

The officials said additional police personnel were deployed at sensitive and highly sensitive booths.

The Jind assembly segment has been divided into 24 sectors, with six deputy superintendents of police being made in-charge to oversee security arrangements.

Counting of votes will take place on January 31.

Arch rivals BJP, Congress, INLD and JJP are eyeing the results as a self-assessment exercise ahead of Lok Sabha polls this year.
