Mandeep said that while they were crossing the Panama jungles, they were "face-to-face" with crocodiles and snakes.&nbsp;
They were told by their fellow travellers that if they asked too many questions, they could be shot.&nbsp;
"For 13 days, we moved through the treacherous route that included 12 canals. Crocodiles, snakes &ndash; we had to bear all. Some were given sticks to deal with the dangerous reptiles," he added.

Singh further stressed that their food was half-baked 'rotis' and sometimes noodles, adding that proper food was a distant thing for them.&nbsp;

Currently, two men accused of running a smuggling ring on either side of the US-Canada border are awaiting trial, scheduled for Monday (Nov 18).

The accused were identified as Harshkumar Patel alias "Dirty Harry", an experienced smuggler, who was coordinating things from Canada, and Steve Shand, a driver recruited by Harshkumar, was on the US side.&nbsp;

Both were accused of being part of a sophisticated human smuggling operation, which has been feeding a fast-growing population of Indians illegally living in the US.&nbsp;

However, both have pleaded not guilty.&nbsp;

On his last trip in January 2022, Shand was about to pick up 11 more Indian migrants, including the Patels. However, only seven survived the extreme cold.

The smuggling network was reportedly charging up to $90,000 per person. Meanwhile, many families like the Patels sold their farmlands or used heavy savings to fund these journeys.&nbsp;

It wasn’t until much later that the Canadian authorities found the Patel family who had died due to the extreme cold.

Manu Saigal, General Staffing Directorat Adecco India, noted that given the current circumstances, the potential that India’s experts bring to the global stage cannot be ignored. However, the delays that skilled Indian workers encounter when applying for employment-based green cards not only hamper their personal goals but also create a barrier for companies hoping to capitalise on their skills.

“The uncertainty and protracted processing times act as a deterrent for highly skilled individuals, who could otherwise contribute significantly to their host countries,” she added.

There were 80,324 petitions pending as of March 2023, representing a total of around 171,635 persons, including the spouses and children of the workers. 289,000 people were waiting for the processing of their green card applications, and another 1.3 million people were on hold.

“Efficient immigration policies play a pivotal role in capitalising on the capabilities of international talent. Streamlined processes for green card allocations could unlock India’s workforce potential even further, allowing companies to access the right skills at the right time. Reforming immigration systems can help strike a balance between safeguarding national interests and nurturing global talent mobility,” Saigal said in a statement.

She continued by saying that while it is true that India is becoming a talent hotspot, it is crucial to solve the problems caused by prolonged wait times for green cards for both individuals and the global business landscape.
