Lenders to the airline agreed on July 19 to provide interim financing to help it cover legal and other costs as bankruptcy resolution experts seek a buyer.

Last month, Ministry of Corporate Affairs ordered an investigation into embattled Jet Airways over alleged mismanagement of funds, in another headache for the airline that halted operations in April after running out of cash.

The ministry ordered the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) to carry out the probe, according to a government order seen by Reuters.

Separately, a government source told Reuters that the airline's former chairman, Naresh Goyal, had approached Delhi High Court to quash an order by authorities that stops him from travelling abroad. The government plans to oppose Goyal`s plea, the source added.

Low-cost airline GoAir has put a new management team in place as it embarks on an aggressive expansion plan to capture the space vacated with the grounding of Jet Airways.

Miranda Mills, a former executive of Airbus and Rolls Royce, has been appointed as the new Chief Operating Officer. She will join in August and will report to Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Jeh Wadia.

Mills bring with her over 25 years of experience in the aerospace industry.

Sanjay Gupta will be the new Chief Financial Officer while Arjun Dasgupta will take over as the Vice President for International Operations, the company said in a statement.

The other appointments include Samir Patel who will head network planning, Harjinder Singh Bhasin (airports), Shabnam Syed (marketing and e-commerce), Graham Parker (revenue management) and Richard Nanton (flight operations).

GoAir operates about 285 flights a day to 24 domestic destinations and has four international services.

On Thursday, it announced five new international services to the Gulf region, two to Bangkok and eight new domestic services.

The carrier with 11.1 per cent domestic market share is expanding its India operations from Hyderabad with eight new flights covering cities such as Cochin, Chennai, Jaipur, Bengaluru, Chandigarh and Patna.

Its new international services are Delhi-Abu Dhabi, Mumbai-Abu Dhabi, Mumbai-Muscat, Delhi-Bangkok, Kannur-Dubai, Mumbai-Bangkok and Kannur-Kuwait.

"We have embarked on an aggressive expansion plan and the new flights are a manifestation of that strategy," said Wadia.

"This is a milestone moment for us to have announced seven new international destinations within a year of commencement of our international operations. The global and regional expansion has been planned to allow quick and convenient connections for passengers and is a reflection of our continued journey towards excellence," he said.

GoAir has 51 aircraft and plans to expand its fleet further. Till date, it has flown over 73.3 million passengers since its inception. The company aims to touch the magic figure of 100 million passengers in the next two years.

Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has done the safety audit of five airlines, including Air India, and has listed out security concerns in these carriers, said Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Thursday.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Puri said, "The implementation of Safety Management System (SMS) was found to be deficient. Quantum of Digital Flight Data Recorder (DFDR) data analysed under Flight Operations Quality Assurance (FOQA) was not as per the Indian safety regulators'&nbsp;requirement."

"Inspection schedules were not revised as per the latest Maintenance Planning Document (MPD). Maintenance Control Centre was found not to be maintained as per the required manpower. Flight crew rostering software was not upgraded," he added.

The Civil Aviation Minister further said, "Untrained staffs were found manning check-in counters. The other staff at counters too were found to have inadequate knowledge for the handling of Dangerous Goods despite being trained in Dangerous Good Regulations (DGR). DGCA found that there was a delay in carrying out the corrective actions for the FOQA exceedances."

"DGCA has directed the operators to take corrective action," he said.

Puri said, "The DGCA proactively works towards improving the safety level of civil air transport in the country."

"The DGCA regularly conducts safety audits of scheduled and non-scheduled airline operators in the country as per the annual surveillance plan. The last five safety audits conducted were of Air India Express, SpiceJet, Air India, Indigo and GoAirways," his reply reads.

On the question of whether there are any plans or any private airline came before the DGCA for its revival, Puri said, "No such proposal for revival from any private airline has been received by the DGCA."&nbsp;

"The disabled SpiceJet aircraft, which was stuck in Runway-27 RESA has been pulled out on Runway surface at 11:10 PM yesterday," Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) spokesperson said.

Officials had been trying to pull the aircraft and operationalise the main runway which was shut after the city-bound SpiceJet SG 6237 skidded off the runway while landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport on July 2.

All passengers of the flight on Jaipur-Mumbai route were deplaned normally and are safe.

The incident led to the shutdown of the main runway of the Mumbai airport with flights cancelled or diverted to the nearby airports. An alternate runway was put into operation at the airport.&nbsp;

"There is an initial report of one of its captains Mr Rohit Bhasin who is also working as a regional director picking up a wallet from a duty-free shop in Sydney. Air India has instituted an enquiry into this incident and has placed the captain under suspension," a spokesperson of the airline said.

The suspension order issued by the airline on Saturday stated: "It has been reported by regional manager Australasia that you allegedly committed an act of shoplifting from a duty free shop at Sydney airport before the departure of flight AI301 of 22nd June 2019, from Sydney airport for which you were rostered as one of the Commander."

"Without prejudice to any disciplinary action to be initiated against you and pending enquiry, you are hereby placed under suspension with immediate effect," the order stated.

The spokesperson said, "Air India lays the highest stress on the proper conduct of its staff and has a zero-tolerance policy towards acts of impropriety."&nbsp;

The cash-strapped company became the first domestic airliner to go into bankruptcy after the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) admitted an insolvency petition filed by SBI on behalf of 26 lenders on June 20.

"Pursuant to an order dated June 20, 2019, of NCLT Mumbai Bench, Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP) has been initiated for Jet Airways (India) as per the provisions of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016," Jet Airways said in a regulatory filing Sunday.

It further said that upon initiation of CIRP, the powers of the Board of Directors of the company have been suspended and shall be exercised by the Interim Resolution Professional.

Jet Airways owes more than Rs 8,000 crore to banks, and thousands of crores more in arrears to vendors, lessors and employees.&nbsp;

The airline formally stopped flying on April 17 and banks voted for bankruptcy on June 17.

Harried bankers Monday decided against <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/jet-airways-shares-continue-to-face-massive-selling-pressure-tumble-over-18-per-cent-227881">an outright sale of Jet Airways</a> to the lone bidder, instead voted to send it for bankruptcy to recover their Rs 8,000 crore dues.

The once largest private sector airline started over 25 years ago by airline-ticketing-agent-turned-entrepreneur Naresh Goyal, stopped flying on April 17 after it ran out of cash and the unpaid lessors took away most of its 100-odd operational airplanes.

The decision of the lenders to seek bankruptcy process through the NCLT comes exactly two months after the airline stopped flying on April 17, after being on the fringe since last July.

The nascent bankruptcy process has been fraught with inordinate delays with only a fraction of the cases have been resolved within the timeline, while the asset in on the books of the once the largest airliner are just fraction of its dues which run into over Rs 36,000 crore.

After a meeting of the 26 lenders here Monday, SBI in a statement said, "after due deliberations, the lenders have decided to seek resolution for Jet Airways under the bankruptcy code since only a conditional bid was received".

The statement further said the move was necessitated as the prospective investor wants some Sebi exemptions for a possible deal which can be worked out better under the bankruptcy laws.

The Etihad-Hinduja consortium had reportedly shown interest but not given a concrete proposal yet, forcing the lenders to take the NCLT plunge as they have asked for a large haircut from the lenders.

The decision also comes amidst reports of Goyal being put on a lookout notice by federal law enforcement agencies and also launching a money-laundering probe against him.

The grounding of Jet Airways, which was the largest full-service carrier left over 23,000 employees unpaid for months in the lurch, and also sent airfares soaring by over 40 per cent on average. And even after two months, prices are yet to normalise.

As the cash crisis worsened and lenders refused any lifeline to the airline under promoter chairman Goyal, who was forced to give up control on March 25, when lenders had in principle agreed to infuse Rs 1,500 crore for equity. But that never materialised, as bankers were chary of the fate of the February 12 circular of the RBI which was being heard at the Supreme Court.

Finally, on April 2, the apex court struck down the contentious circular, sealing the bank-led process to resolve the crisis at the airline.

The Abu Dhabi carrier Etihad has been holding 24 per cent in the airline since November 2013 after investing Rs 2,062 crore but is not interested in increasing the stake further or having management control of the airline.

With the March 25 resolution, Etihad's 24 per cent stake was halved and it lost its board representation as well along with Goyal and his wife Anita.

Anyway, the airline remains an asset only as a legal entity as its liabilities far outweigh the negligible assets. While its liabilities and debt are over Rs 36,000 crore, the only key assets are its two Heathrow airport slots and the minority stake in its loyalty programme called JPMiles.

Also, most of its domestic airport slots have been given away to other airlines by the government and so are some of its slots at some key international airports.

On the aeroplane assets side, Jet had only 16 on its book as the rest of its 123 fleet were on lease and most of them have been de-registered and taken away by the foreign lessors already.

The Jet shares are at multiyear lows and plunged 17 per cent Monday after exchanges last week put curbs on trading in its stock on June 12. In the past three trading sessions alone, the stock lost as much as 55 per cent of its value.

Monday the stock dived close to 17 per cent to close Rs 68.30 on the BSE with a market cap of just under Rs 776 crore, whose benchmark also plunged 1.25 per cent.

When banks converted a part of their debt into equity when the stock was trading over Rs 250 apiece. The conversion price was fixed at a nominal Re 1, though.

With bankers now opting for NCLT, the fate of the previous petitions from two operational creditors seeking bankruptcy could be expedited.

On June 10, two operational creditors--Shaman Wheels and Gaggar Enterprises-- had taken the airline to the Mumbai bench of the NCLT seeking bankruptcy and on June 13 the tribunal, which is yet to admit the petitions put off the matter for further hearing to June 20.

The airline owes Rs 8.74 crore to Shaman Wheels and Rs 53 lakh to Gaggar Enterprises.

Jet Airways owes over Rs 8,000 crore to a consortium of 26 banks led by the State Bank, which now run the airline, while it has a much larger debt pile by way of accumulated losses to the tune of Rs 13,000 crore and vendor dues of over Rs 10,000 crore and salary dues of over Rs 3,000 crore.

It can be noted that on April 8 through 12, bankers had put the airline on sale-offering 33 to 75 per cent stake-of which the lenders own 51 per cent now-to interested parties and received four preliminary bids.

While SWIP has around 800 members, there are about 500 employees with JAMEVA.

"The contribution from employees would be realised from their future earnings and increased productivity... As per our initial estimate, the contribution of employees group over a hypothetical 5-year Employee Stock Ownership Programme (ESOP) is likely to be upward of Rs 4,000 crore.

"In addition, we are also confident of securing an investment commitment of up to Rs 3,000 crore from outside investors," the letter, dated April 29, said.

Budget carrier IndiGo continued to be the largest player with a market share of 46.9 per cent ferrying 54 lakh passengers during the month, while its closest rival SpiceJet was a distant second with 13.6 per cent of the total traffic pie carrying 15.81 million in March.

Significantly, the national carrier Air India, which has a number of aircraft on the ground for quite some time now, had the dubious distinction of cancelling the maximum number of flights or 8.94 per cent of its scheduled departures, followed by JetLite and new entrant Star Air.

The passenger load factor in March has shown falling trend compared to February due to the end of the vacation period.

The plea, filed through advocates Shashank Deo Sudhi and Shashi Bhushan, said, "It is common knowledge that all competitor airlines have exorbitantly increased their airfares and the toothless and vulnerable consumers are constrained to suffer not only in terms of money but also in terms of mental harassment of unprecedented scale."

Citing media report, it said more than Rs 360 crore of the passengers/consumers hard earned money is under threat due to non-refund of ticket value.

"The passengers have to not only purchase alternative tickets at a highly exorbitant cost but also go through lots of anxieties and mental agony. This has resulted in profiteering by other airlines at the cost of the passengers and till date no relief has been announced by the respondents (Ministry and DGCA). It is on record that such a situation was existing for more than two years, but was intentionally allowed by the authorities without any concern for passengers and other affected parties," the plea claimed.

It also said an amendment to the existing laws and appointment of an effective regulator is the need of the hour to protect the interest of passengers and regulate airfares in an open and transparent manner to avoid such events in future.

The Monday meeting with lenders was reportedly expected to take a final decision on the quantum of funds to be infused immediately to avert a possible shut down.&nbsp;

Similar airfares are being displayed on websites for an entire week. Bipin Singh, who is a frequent traveller, said he had to pay a heavy fare for travelling today from Mumbai to Delhi by GoAir flight G8-319.

"I booked a ticket from Mumbai to Delhi today morning for over Rs 25,000. There was chaos at the Mumbai airport due to the suspension of Jet Airways flights," he told ANI.

Last month, the DGCA had said no diktat was issued to the airlines on hiking airfares. "We have just advised them that to increase their capacity to keep airfares in check," it added.

The Indian aviation market has seen a sharp increase in airfares in the past few months due to the suspension of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft as well as the ensuing Jet Airways crisis.

In India, Jet Airways has five Boeing 737 MAX while Spice Jet has 12 aircraft of this make. The aircraft were grounded following the Ethiopian Airlines crash.

Meanwhile, a senior DGCA official said the aviation regulatory body is reviewing the hike in airfares on specific routes across the country.

The 737 MAX jets came under scrutiny after 346 people lost their lives in two deadly plane crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia.

On March 10, 157 people on board an Ethiopian Airlines flight - a Boeing737 MAX jet - lost their lives after their flight crashed just a few minutes after it took off from Addis Ababa.

In October last year, a Boeing 737 MAX Lion Air flight crashed in Indonesia, claiming the lives of all 181 people on board.

Investigations are ongoing into both the incidents.&nbsp;

In India, Jet Airways has five Boeing 737 MAX while Spice Jet has 12 aircraft of this make. The aircraft were grounded following the Ethiopian Airlines crash. Meanwhile, a senior DGCA official said the aviation regulatory body is reviewing the hike in airfares on specific routes across the country. The 737 MAX jets came under scrutiny after 346 people lost their lives in two deadly plane crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia. On March 10, 157 people on board an Ethiopian Airlines flight - a Boeing737 MAX jet - lost their lives after their flight crashed just a few minutes after it took off from Addis Ababa. In October last year, a Boeing 737 MAX Lion Air flight crashed in Indonesia, claiming the lives of all 181 people on board. Investigations are ongoing into both the incidents.

According to a newspaper report on Sunday, Jet's lenders, led by the State Bank of India, are considering a proposal to infuse 10 billion rupees ($144.55 million) to keep the airline afloat.

The money is expected to be disbursed after the Jet management submits an operational plan on how it intends to use the money till May 7, the report said.&nbsp;

The lenders, who have been seeking a new investor to take a stake of up to 75 per cent in the airline, hope to complete the selection of bidders by May 7.

Initial bids were to be submitted by the end April 10, but SBI extended the deadline to April 12.

Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways, which owns a 24-per cent stake in the airline, private equity fund TPG Capital, government-owned sovereign fund National Investment and Infrastructure Fund and ousted chairman Naresh Goyal are among those to have submitted bids, the Business Standard reported.
