An Indian farm labourer, Satnam Singh, succumbed to his injuries in a hospital on Wednesday (June 19) after being abandoned by the roadside with a severed hand, an injury sustained while working on a farm in Latina, Italy, about 50 km from Rome.&nbsp;

Satnam Singh’s arm was reportedly severed during a work accident. Instead of receiving immediate medical attention, he was dumped near his house. This incident has been condemned by Italy’s Labour Minister Marina Calderone as an "act of barbarity."

The Indian Embassy in Italy confirmed Singh’s death and announced the tragic development on its official social media account, stating, "The Embassy is aware of the very unfortunate demise of an Indian national in Latina, Italy. We are in contact with local authorities. Efforts are underway to contact the family and provide consular assistance."

Addressing the Italian parliament, Minister Calderones said, "The Indian agricultural worker who suffered a serious accident in the countryside of Latina and was abandoned in very serious conditions...has died."

Reports indicate that Satnam, approximately 31 years old, was working without legal papers.&nbsp;

The announcement was for 14 crops including paddy, ragi, bajra, jowar, maize and cotton which will have a financial implication of ₹2 lakh crore (approx $23.97 billion) for the government and entail a gain of Rs 35,000 crore ($4.19 billion) to farmers over the previous year.&nbsp;

Vaishnaw told reporters that the MSP for 'common' grade paddy has been raised ₹117 ($1.40) to ₹2,300 ($27.57) per quintal, while for the 'A' grade variety it has been hiked to ₹2,320 ($27.81) per quintal for the upcoming Kharif season. The highest absolute increase in MSP over the previous year has been recommended for oilseeds and pulses.&nbsp;

Indian government approves Minimum Support Price on 14 Kharif season crops

India's image in Canada has taken a hit as positive views related to the country dropped&nbsp;by 11 points since March 2023,&nbsp;according to new data from the non-profit Angus Reid Institute.&nbsp;

The Angus Reid Institute was founded in October 2014 by pollster and sociologist Dr Angus Reid and provides public opinion polling among other services. Some reports suggest that the non-profit is biased in its reporting.&nbsp;

In the latest report on India-Canada, the institute suggested that only 33 per cent of Canadians have a favourable opinion of India while a majority of 54 per cent view it unfavourably.

This decline follows a report from the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians (NSICOP) which highlighted concerns about interference in Canadian elections by both China and India.&nbsp;

In its 2019 review, the Committee noted that the "most significant perpetrators of foreign interference in Canada were the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Russian Federation" and that other states, "including India, Pakistan and Iran engaged in foreign interference activities."&nbsp;

Notably, India has strongly refuted the claims terming them "baseless". Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal had said, "We have seen media reports about the Canadian commission inquiring into. We strongly reject all such baseless allegations of Indian interference in Canadian elections."
