Google-owned video streaming platform YouTube said Tuesday (Mar 26) it removed 2.25 million videos in India during the fourth quarter of 2023 (October-December). The videos were removed over non-compliance of its community guidelines. During the same period, YouTube removed over nine million videos worldwide. The video platform in a statement said its actions helped users stay away from harmful content.

"Since the earliest days as a company, our Community Guidelines have protected the YouTube community from harmful content," the company said in a statement. "YouTube’s Community Guidelines are enforced consistently across the globe, regardless of the uploader, where the content is uploaded or how the content was generated," it added.

The statement added that when content is removed from YouTube, it’s removed globally. It added that policy violations are identified using a combination of machine learning and human reviewers.

Role of machine and AI

It added that more than 96 per cent of the now-removed videos globally were initially flagged by machines rather than humans. It also claimed that above 53 per cent of those videos were removed even before they received the first view and over 27 per cent of the videos were removed between one and 10 views.

"YouTube removed over 20 million channels in Q4 2023 for violating our Community Guidelines (globally)," YouTube said in its statement. "The overwhelming majority of these channels were terminated for violating our spam policies, including but not restricted to scams, misleading metadata or thumbnails, video and comments spam," it added.

While we talk about how nations like Japan and China are grappling with a demographic crisis, new research has highlighted that India might not remain immune to the worldwide trend if immediate actions are not taken. A global study published last week in The Lancet journal stated that the fertility rate in India has fallen drastically, from 6.2 in 1950 to just under 2 in 2021. What’s more alarming is the projection that the rate will further drop to 1.29 by 2050 and 1.04 by 2100.

It is to be noted that a fertility rate of 2.1 is generally considered a replacement level. With increased life expectancy and a falling fertility rate, India can face a severe demographic crisis, similar to what is unfolding in China and Japan.

Top challenges for India

Greying society has its own set of complex challenges. The government is forced to divert more funds towards healthcare and social security while it is left with a shrinking working population to boost economic growth.

This also leads to wealth gaps in society. It is believed that the falling fertility rate fuels a preference for male children over girls, which could further exacerbate the demography crisis.

Experts say India needs to act now.

"While these challenges are still a few decades away for India, we need to start acting now with a comprehensive approach for the future," Poonam Muttreja, chief of the Population Foundation of India, was quoted as saying by Nikkei Asia.

"Economic policies stimulating growth and job creation, alongside social security and pension reforms, will also be essential in adapting to and mitigating the impacts of declining fertility rates," she added.

The middle-income trap

If New Delhi fails to overcome these challenges, India could very well be headed towards the middle-income trap. This happens when once-brisk economies stagnate before reaching high-income status.

India is still a relatively young nation with a median age of little over 30. Its population is also increasing continuously, with the United Nations expecting the total population to rise to over 1.6 billion by 2050.

The Allahabad High Court, Lucknow Bench, has made a significant decision, declaring the 'UP Board of Madarsa Education Act 2004' unconstitutional due to violations of secular principles. Justices Vivek Chaudhary and Subhash Vidyarthi presided over the case.

While the ruling has been announced, a detailed judgment is awaited, which will shed more light on the specifics of the decision and its implications. The matter was reserved for a verdict on February 8

What is the 'UP Board of Madarsa Education Act 2004'?

Passed by the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly in 2004, it is an "act to provide for the establishment of a Board of Madarsa Education in the State and for the matters connected therewith or incidental thereto."

How will this ruling affect students?

The court has directed the Uttar Pradesh Government to formulate a scheme ensuring that students currently enrolled in Madrasas can seamlessly transition into the formal education system.

The backstory of the case: How did this start?

The Allahabad High Court verdict came after Anshuman Singh Rathore filed a writ petition, challenging various aspects of the Madrasa Board's functioning, including its management by the Minority Welfare Department, involving both the Union of India and the State government.

In October 2023, the Uttar Pradesh government formed an SIT to probe madrassas' funds from abroad and also surveyed the Islamic education institutions in the state.

Earlier, the court had expressed concerns about potential arbitrariness in the administration of educational institutions, emphasising the need for transparency and adherence to principles of equal opportunity and secular governance.

Legal representation

Advocates Aditya Kumar Tiwari and Ghulam Mohammad Kami represented the petitioner, while a team of advocates represented the respondents, including Afzal Ahmad Siddiqui, Amrendra Nath Tripathi, Anand Dwivedi, Iqbal Ahmad, Mahendra Bahadur Singh, Mohd. Kumail Haider, Sanjeev Singh, Shailendra Singh Rajawat, Sudhanshu Chauhan, Syed Husain, and Vikas Singh.

One of Tamil Nadu's space startups will launch its maiden rocket on March 22, making history. Agnikul Cosmos Private Limited, a space start-up with its headquarters in Chennai, will launch its first rocket, the Agnibaan Sub Orbital Technology Demonstrator (SOrTeD), from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh.

It may be noted here, Agnibaan SOrTeD will be India’s first launch from a private launchpad. It is also going to be India’s first semi-cryogenic engine powered rocket launch and the world’s first single piece 3D printed engine designed and built indigenously.

The startup founded in 2017 by Srinath Ravichandran, Moin SPM and Satya Chakravarthy, Agnikul Cosmos became the first company in India to sign an agreement with Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) under the IN-SPACe initiative to have access to the space agency’s expertise and its facilities to build Agnibaan in December 2020.

Commenting on the launch, Mr. Chakravarthy, co-founder and advisor, Agnikul Cosmos, and professor at the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, told The Hindu, “This would be India’s first liquid oxygen-kerosene rocket flight in India, from India’s first privately developed launchpad, in Sriharikota.”

"This would be India's first liquid oxygen-kerosene rocket flight in the country, from India's first privately developed launchpad, in Sriharikota,” said Chakravarthy, co-founder and advisor of Agnikul Cosmos and professor at the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras
“Significantly, we would be flying our original world’s most integrated single piece 3D printed rocket,” he added.

"This is a sub-orbital launch, but it is not a sounding rocket," he said further.

It is equipped with a gimballed thrust vector control and a full suite of closed loop feedback guidance and control. Because of this, it is the first private launch in India that needs a flight termination mechanism and a safety distance from the launchpad that was determined by doing tens of thousands of worst-case simulations.

With the exception of stage separation, Chakravarthy clarified, "this mission attempts to validate the guidance, control, and navigation system, the launch release hold mechanism, the entire command sequence operated by the onboard computer, telemetry and tracking."

He made note of the fact that a post-flight analysis of every subsystem's performance will come after the mission. The preparations for the orbital trip are the nearest future plan.

Agnikul is the second rocket in India to be privately developed. The first rocket developed privately in India, Vikram-S, took flight from the ISRO launchpad in Sriharikota in 2022. Built by the Hyderabad-based startup Skyroot Aerospace Private Limited, the 6-meter-tall vehicle reached a maximum height of 89.5 kilometers before launching and splashing down into the Bay of Bengal around five minutes later.
