<p>India said that the UN Human Rights body's 'concerns' about the country's&nbsp;Lok Sabha Elections 2024 later this summer were&nbsp;'unwarranted'. India's response came during the general debate on the oral update by the UN Human Rights agency's&nbsp;High Commissioner&nbsp;Volker Türk.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking at the&nbsp;55th session of the Human Rights Council, Türk said that India's general elections will be "unique in scale" but added that he was&nbsp;"concerned by increasing restrictions on the civic space – with human rights defenders, journalists and perceived critics targeted – as well as by hate speech and discrimination against minorities, especially Muslims".&nbsp;</p>

<p>India's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Arindam Bagchi, said that Türk's concerns about India's elections&nbsp;are "unwarranted and do not reflect the reality of the largest democracy in the world."</p>

<p>"In any democracy, argumentation is natural. It is imperative that those in positions of authority do not allow their judgement to be clouded by propaganda," Bagchi added.</p>

<p>Referring to the nature of India's democratic polity, Bagchi said that the country's constitutional values are backed by&nbsp;"fiercely independent institutions, including a robust judiciary, that aim to protect the rights of all."</p>

<p>"Our electoral process has been characterised by a high degree of people’s participation and full faith in the electoral mandate by all. In fact, we are privileged that many across the world seek to learn from our experience and aspire to emulate it," Bagchi added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Brazilian Ambassador Aranha Correa do Lago told WION, “It was a great pleasure to be reunited with her since we had worked together at the Johannesburg Summit for Sustainable Development in 2002. I am thrilled that we will work together again, this time to make the Brazil-India relationship even stronger and more diverse.”</p>

<p>Mexican envoy Federico Salas on the informal meet said, "India is keen on strengthening ties with Latin America".</p>

<p>This is the first in-person meeting of most of the envoy of the Latin American countries with the new secretary East.</p>

<p>Venezuelan Envoy Coromoto Godoy told WION, "A wonderful interaction during lunch with the new Secretary East. She had this warm gesture of inviting us for lunch to meet all head of missions personally and to reiterate MEA’s interest in working closely with our region."</p>

<p>Adding, "A very experienced diplomat with a solid career that makes us predict she will achieve great success as Secretary East. Undoubtedly an example of the excellence of women in Indian diplomacy."</p>

<p>India has been reaching out to Latin America, a number of high-level visits have happened from India including that of PM Modi to Brazil for Brics, Argentina for G20 and Mexico for a bilateral visit in 2016.</p>

<p>Addressing a UN General Assembly session on 'Report of the International Atomic Energy Agency' Friday, First Secretary in India's Permanent Mission to the UN Sandeep Kumar Bayyapu said India attaches importance to the IAEA's work in different fields of nuclear science and supports its programme on nuclear fusion.</p>

<p>"Nuclear power remains an important option to meet the challenges of increased energy demand, address concerns about climate change, redress volatile fossil fuel prices and ensure security of the energy supply," he said.</p>

<p>In this context, the IAEA's recent International Ministerial Conference on nuclear power in Abu Dhabi played a significant role in bringing policymakers, scientists, technologists and environmentalists together to examine the prospects of nuclear power.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bayyapu stressed the need of the IAEA to continue its programmes of support to member states who are embarking on or expanding their nuclear energy programmes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It also needs to support member states in enhancing their capacity to build public acceptance for nuclear energy, he said.</p>

<p>The IAEA's programmes and achievements under nuclear applications in food and agriculture, human health and nutrition, water resources management, protection of the environment are helpful in meeting the needs of developing countries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Advanced fission reactors, including fast reactors, contribute towards more efficient use of nuclear fuel, and towards reducing radioactive waste volumes, he said, adding that India participated actively and exchanged information on new developments and experience in the field of fast reactors and related technologies during the International Conference on Fast Reactors and Related Fuel Cycles held in the Russian Federation in June last year.</p>

<p>"International collaboration under the IAEA would help provide a much wider resource base for future nuclear technology development," Bayyapu said.</p>

<p>India had hosted the 27th IAEA Fusion Energy Conference (FEC-2018) last month in Ahmedabad. The conference provided a forum for the discussion of key physics and technology issues as well as innovative concepts of direct relevance to the use of nuclear fusion as a source of energy.&nbsp;</p>
