<p>Other U.S. officials and scientists say the injuries may be the product of a psychological illness, or even pesticides.</p>

<p>Pompeo, who was the CIA director before leading the State Department, said the government was still examining multiple theories in what he described as “a very complicated situation.”</p>

<p>“There is not yet any complete U.S. government analysis which definitively tells us precisely how these all came to be, whether they’re part of a single cohort,” Pompeo said at a news conference.</p>

<p>“There are significant U.S. government resources now, what, three-plus years on, devoted to getting to the bottom of this and then holding those responsible accountable — should we determine that that’s required,” he said.</p>

<p>Pompeo was responding to a reporter’s question about what the State Department was doing to protect diplomats, and why there appeared to be deep disparities in the response to the episode in Cuba compared to the one in China. Pompeo took umbrage at the question.</p>

<p>CIA Director Gina Haspel is not convinced Russia carried out attacks that caused the illnesses, officials said. Russia has denied any role.</p>

<p>The investigations led to some lawmakers criticizing the Trump administration over the reported mistreatment of diplomats and spies. The lawmakers are also calling for Pompeo and other top officials to stop concealing information on the suspected attacks.</p>

<p>Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., said Tuesday that the articles were “deeply troubling and should spur the Trump administration to do everything in its power to protect federal employees from these attacks and investigate the full scope of this threat.”</p>

<p>“These findings should put an end to the foot-dragging, evasiveness and obstruction at the State Department to deliver benefits to all of these injured federal employees and their families, and get to the bottom about what happened,” she added.</p>

<p>A half-dozen U.S. officials told The Times that the Trump administration’s responses to the suspected attacks varied based on political considerations.</p>

<p>The State Department has refused to provide basic information to Congress about the episodes — even obscuring the number of U.S. government employees and family members affected worldwide. Lawmakers and scientists also fear the department is trying to bury a detailed report on the episodes it received in August from a committee at the National Academies of Sciences.</p>

<p>At Italy's Oglio Po hospital, 25 out of 90 doctors are infected with the coronavirus, compounding the strain faced by a health system overwhelmed by the world's second biggest outbreak.</p>

<p>Adding in nurses, technicians and other employees, a fifth of the hospital's personnel has tested positive, hospital director Daniela Ferrari said.</p>

<p>They and healthcare workers like them almost certainly unwittingly spread the virus before needing treatment or quarantine themselves, researchers and unions say.</p>

<p>The picture is the same at other hospitals, among family doctors and in nursing homes - exacerbated, unions, sector leaders and medics say, by them not having enough masks and gloves when the outbreak was detected a month ago.</p>

<p>In Lombardy, the Italian region with the highest number of cases and deaths, at least two hospitals became vehicles of contamination, with patients infecting medical staff who then spread the disease as they travelled around their communities before a stringent lockdown was imposed.</p>

<p>"Patients infected other patients and doctors who then went out and contaminated others," Remuzzi said.</p>

<p>At a national level, 4,268 health workers - or 0.4 percent of the total - had contracted the virus as of March 20, according to the National Health Institute.</p>

<p>In Lombardy's northeastern city of Bergamo, 134 family doctors out of 600 - or 22% - had fallen sick or were quarantined, Guido Marinoni, the head of the local association of general practitioners, said. Three doctors have died.</p>

<p>In the city's nursing homes, the situation was even worse, with 1,464 health workers infected out of 5,805, he said. Bergamo has been so overwhelmed that the army has stepped in to move bodies to other provinces as the cemetery was too full.</p>

<p>Marinoni said that for the first two weeks after the disease was first detected in northern Italy on Feb. 21, family doctors lacked masks and gloves and so were easily contaminated by coughing and feverish patients who went to see them without knowing they had the coronavirus.</p>

<p>"It's like fighting a war with a toy gun. I hope the rest of Europe learn from the good things Italy did, but also from our mistakes."</p>

<p>The head of the government's coronavirus relief effort says Italy needs 90 million masks a month and it has "activated all possible channels" to achieve that.</p>

<p>The 29-year-old's parents were using smokeless briquettes to warm their home for the first time that night: A government-issued fuel,&nbsp;made of coking coal from the southern Gobi region and washed coal powder,&nbsp;it has been linked to deaths and ill-health.</p>

<p>Since residents started using the briquettes in October, there have been seven other deaths,&nbsp;mainly children, pregnant women, and the elderly. Nearly one thousand have been hospitalised in Ulaanbaatar's outer slum districts, prompting fears the fuel can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Gerel's grieving mother, Jargalsaikhan Mishigdorj, warns the fuel should be used with care.</p>

<p>"We are working under an enormous amount of pressure," she says.</p>

<p>The city's emergency unit said issues were easing once people were told the "correct ways to burn the briquettes".&nbsp;</p>

<p>They said public service workers were spending time in the ger district to teach people about the new fuel as well as to report if any raw coal was still being used.</p>

<p>Its the latest example of governments in Asia struggling to find a safe, workable solution to replacing coal, in a region that is battling toxic levels of air pollution.</p>

<p>In India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's promise to provide cooking gas connections to millions of rural residents has been beset by corruption.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In neighbouring China, three million homes near Beijing were ordered to switch from coal to gas or electric heating in 2017, but a difficult transition left many without any heating at all.</p>

<p>Ulaanbaatar is the world's coldest capital and only half of the residents have central heating, and Ulaanbaatar regularly exceeds World Health Organisation recommendations for air quality.</p>

<p>The government has been trying to force low-grade coal out of commission to reduce the thick air pollution that has plagued the city.&nbsp;</p>

<p>And experts say there is evidence that the move is already having a positive impact on the environment.</p>

<p>Sonomdagva, associate professor at the National University of Mongolia, told AFP that PM 2.5 -- tiny particles that get into the lungs and bloodstream -- had decreased by 40 per cent compared with October last year.</p>

<p>"However, an incredibly long and warm autumn, plus the usage of the new refined fuel, and fear of suffocation meaning people use only wood (for fuel) can also be reasons of the 40 per cent decrease," he said.</p>

<p>Byambajargal Losol, a physicist at the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/first-time-in-a-decade-mongolian-president-to-visit-india-250052">Mongolian Science Academy</a>, told AFP that he believes the smokeless briquettes are the best way to reduce air pollution -- but that more needs to be done to help their safe use.</p>

<p>"People are using briquettes just like the old raw coal and burning it the same way," he said, adding: "The briquettes are thick and compact so they require twice as much oxygen to burn, compared to raw coal."</p>

<p>The state-owned factory that produces the briquettes said families should also clean their stoves before burning the new fuel.</p>

<p>All of them have been back in Canada for a year but still suffer from what has become known as "Havana syndrome," a mystery illness with symptoms including strong migraines as well as visual and auditory disorders.</p>

<p>According to CBC, which interviewed five of those affected, the first symptoms appeared in the spring of 2017 — but they say that Ottawa waited more than a year before helping everyone.</p>

<p>Questioned on the subject on Wednesday while she was in Washington, foreign minister Chrystia Freeland said the safety of diplomats remained a top priority.</p>

<p>"I am not going to comment on the specifics, but I do want to reiterate that I have met with some of these diplomats and, as I said to them, their health and safety needs to be our priority and they have my true sympathy and concern," she said.</p>

<p>On January 30, Canada announced it had reduced its staffing at the embassy to about half as a result of the unexplained symptoms.</p>

<p>Former England manager Glenn Hoddle was taken to hospital after falling 'seriously ill' at the BT Sport studio on Saturday.</p>

<p>"Our friend &amp; colleague Glenn Hoddle was taken seriously ill at the BT Sport studio this morning. Everyone of us is right with you Glenn, sending love &amp; strength," BT Sport presenter Jake Humphrey posted on his official Twitter feed.</p>

<p>Hoddle, who spent the bulk of his playing career with Tottenham Hotspur and also played for Chelsea, Monaco and Swindon Town, works as a pundit for BT Sport and also works for ITV Sport for England games.</p>

<p>BT Sport presenter Mark Pougatch subsequently confirmed that the broadcaster had cancelled its football results show.</p>

<p>"You will understand why there's no BT Sport Score this afternoon. All our thoughts are with Glenn Hoddle and his family," he said on Twitter.</p>

<p>An elegant midfielder Hoddle won 53 caps for his country before managing the team from 1996-1999.</p>

<p>He was celebrating his 61st birthday on Saturday.</p>
