New Zealand batter Glenn Phillips has found himself in hot waters after breaching an ICC rule during the ongoing first Test against Bangladesh in Sylhet. The right-arm off-spinner came under scanner for using saliva on the ball twice during the 34th over – something that is now banned post-Covid outbreak.

As per the Law 41.3 of the game&nbsp;that came into effect on October 1, 2022, players are not allowed to use saliva on the ball. If a player of a particular team is found guilty of doing so, their team would be penalised five runs.

"When cricket resumed following the onset of Covid-19, playing conditions were written in most forms of the game stating that applying saliva to the ball was no longer permitted. MCC's research found that this had little or no impact on the amount of swing the bowlers were getting.&nbsp;

Players were using sweat to polish the ball, and this was equally effective. The new Laws will not permit the use of saliva on the ball, which also removes any grey areas of fielders eating sugary sweets to alter their saliva to apply to the ball. Using saliva will be treated the same way as any other unfair method of changing the condition of the ball,” the law states.

Meanwhile, Mominul Haque admitted being aware of the same and even informed the authorities.

"We are aware of it (Phillips using saliva), and we have informed (the authorities,” the Bangladesh batter said.&nbsp;

Although the Bangladesh Team manager admitted observing the same during the match, New Zealand’s Kyle Jamieson said he was informed about it after the third day’s play. Besides, both on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Paul Reiffel didn’t take any action then.&nbsp;

“The first I heard of it was about 35 seconds ago. So, yeah, I have no idea what happened, or when it was, or what was seen," Jamieson told reporters after the third day's play. "Yeah, I didn't see it. I'll have to go back and watch the footage. But, yeah, I didn't see it."

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Tuesday confirmed interim changes to its playing regulations, which includes a ban on the usage of saliva and scrapping of neutral umpires. The ICC Chief Executive Committee (CEC) ratified the recommendations from the Anil Kumble-led Cricket Committee in a bid to protect the safety of players and officials when cricket resumes.

Apart from the ban on usage of saliva, the ICC also allowed COVID-19 replacements as teams will now be allowed to substitute players displaying symptoms of COVID-19 during a Test match. The Match Referee will approve the nearest like-for-like replacement in like with the concussion substitution.&nbsp;

In line with concussion replacements, the Match Referee will approve the nearest like-for-like replacement. However, COVID-19 replacement won’t be applicable in ODI and T20I cricket.&nbsp;

Players will not be permitted to use saliva on the ball and if a player mistakenly applied saliva then the umpires will show some leniency in the initial phase but subsequent instances will result in the team receiving an official warning. A total of two warnings are allowed per innings and will be followed by a five-run penalty to the batting side. The umpires will clean the ball before play resumes whenever saliva is applied to the ball.

The CEC also announced an additional unsuccessful DRS for each team in each innings of the match keeping in mind that the less experienced umpires.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, additional apparel logos have also been approved by the CEC for the next 12 months. As of now, logos on chests are only allowed in ODIs and T20Is.
