Hurricane Ian makes landfall in Florida with catastrophic force

Twenty-three migrants went missing after their boat sank off the coast of Florida due to Hurricane Ian on Wednesday (September 28), said US Border Patrol. The officials said on Twitter that Border Patrol agents responded to a migrant landing in Stock Island, Florida. US Coast Guard has initiated a search operation for the 23 missing people.

Ian's thrashing of Cuba left at least two people dead, both deaths occurring in the hard-hit western province of Pinar del Rio. A woman died after a wall collapsed on her and a man died after his roof fell on him, state media said.

The hurricane hit Cuba at a time of dire economic crisis. Blackouts and long-running shortages of food, medicine and fuel were likely to complicate efforts to recover from Ian.

On Tuesday, seven migrants from Cuba were taken into custody after they made it to shore in Pompano Beach, Florida, U.S. authorities said.

"Do not risk your life by attempting this journey at sea. Storm surge along with King tide can create treacherous sea conditions even after a storm passes," officials said on Twitter on Tuesday when announcing those detentions. Hurricane Ian, which gained the extremely dangerous Category 4 status, is nearing landfall along southwest Florida, with the top winds attaining the speed of 155 mph, just shy of the 'most dangerous' Category 5 status, the regional weather centre said on Wednesday morning. According to reports, catastrophic winds and rain lashed the state's heavily populated Gulf Coast, with the Naples to Sarasota region at "highest risk" of a devastating storm surge. “Conditions rapidly deteriorating along the southwest Florida coast,” the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Wednesday morning. It warned that the hurricane could push as much as 12 feet of ocean water ashore in Florida, and urged people to evacuate the danger zone. Earlier, US Air Force's hurricane 'hunters' said that Ian intensified over Gulf of Mexico's warm waters after pummeling Cuba on Tuesday and bringing down the country’s electricity grid. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis urged the people living along the coast to immediately rush to safety and stay there. “This is going to be a nasty, nasty day [or] two days,” DeSantis said, reports Los Angeles Times newspaper. “Do what you need to do to stay safe. If you are where that storm is approaching, you’re already in hazardous conditions. It’s going to get a lot worse very quickly. So please hunker down,” he said. Meanwhile, some parts of southern Florida have been feeling the storm’s first effects, with tropical storm-force winds and at least two tornadoes reported in Broward County, including at North Perry Airport, where planes and hangers were damaged. While Key West witnessed major flooding due to storm surge, along with power outages. Hurricane Ian with the top speed of 39 mph (63 kph) first reached Florida at 3 am (local times), and the first hurricane-force winds were recorded at 6 am. According to the hurricane centre in Miami, Hurricane Ian went through a natural cycle when it lost its old eye and formed a new eye, which means that the storm got stronger and larger hours before it was set to make landfall, making it even more of a menace. Hurricane Ian, just shy of 'most dangerous' Category 5 status, nears landfall in Florida

Hurricane Ian has become an extremely dangerous Category 4 storm as it prepares to make landfall on Wednesday evening somewhere along Florida's Gulf Coast, forecasters said. Residents on Tuesday boarded up homes, packed up their vehicles and headed for higher ground. Ian is threatening to bring a deadly storm surge and more than a foot of rain to some areas.

Ian is likely to impact the entire state and the areas in its direct path are expected to see widespread damage and winds of well over 100 mph, USA Today reported. More than 2.5 million Floridians were under evacuation orders or warnings.

Also Read | Hurricane Fiona swamps Puerto Rico, island faces massive power outage

Governor Ron DeSantis has warned of the potential for devastating Hurricane Harvey-like flooding that struck the Houston area in 2017. “It is a big storm, it is going to kick up a lot of water as it comes in. In some areas there will be catastrophic flooding and life-threatening storm surge,” DeSantis told a news conference.

Flash and urban flooding are expected later in the week across central and northern Florida, southern Georgia and coastal South Carolina. Some residential buildings could be "uninhabitable" for weeks or even months due to structural damage caused by hurricane-level winds, the National Weather Service in Miami said.

Florida's relatively flat topography means that water could take several days to fully drain.

Ian made landfall in Cuba's Pinar del Rio Province early on Tuesday, prompting officials early on to cut power to the entire province as a precautionary measure and evacuate 40,000 people from low-lying coastal areas, according to local media reports. Hurricane Ian has become an extremely dangerous Category 4 storm as it prepares to make landfall on Wednesday evening somewhere along Florida's Gulf Coast, forecasters said.
