<p>Scientists at Harvard University have created an artificial fish that flaps its tail using energy generated from cells of human heart. The fish is made of plastic, paper, gelatin and two strips of heart muscle cells. The experiment was carried out by Harvard scientists along with those from Emory University.</p>

<p>The findings from the study have been published in the journal Science. Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) has even tweeted about the study posting a video of the artificial fish swimming around.</p>

<p>The researchers hope to gain insights about advancing understanding about improvements in pacemakers.</p>

<p>“The benefit of this fish project is that we are still trying to master the craft of using live cells as an engineering substrate,” said Kit Parker as quoted by The Guardian. He is one of the lead authors of the study.</p>

<p>“The heart is extremely complex and it’s not enough to mimic the anatomy,” added Parker, a Seas professor. “One must recreate the biophysics in order to have the robust behavior required of building engineered hearts for children born with malformed hearts.”</p>

<p>Parker has expressed hopes that the teams becomes successful in keeping these cells and tissues alive for more than four and a half months.</p>

<p>A human heart was flown nearly 700 km, the distance between two southern Indian cities, Kochi in Kerala and Chennai in Tamil Nadu, to save the life of a 51-year-old patient. The speedy transportation enabled a successful transplant, which was performed on late Sunday evening. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Harvested from a brain-dead person, the heart was transplanted to a 51-year-old male, who had been suffering from a condition known as Dilated Cardio Myopathy (DCM), which decreases the heart's ability to pump blood. The recipient had been on an organ registry waiting list, since February this year. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The donor, a 30-year-old male from Kochi, had failed to respond to treatment, after suffering a traumatic brain injury due to a road accident. He was hospitalised on October 19. He was declared brain dead on Saturday, following which his family was counselled and then consented for organ donation. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>An alert for the heart organ was sent to Tamil Nadu Organ registry, which was later allocated to Rela Hospital in Chennai, as per the standard registry protocol. While the heart was allocated to Tamil Nadu, the remaining organs were allocated to hospitals in Kerala. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

This smooth transit was facilitated by a special Green corridor, a traffic-free route for road quick transport, that was made ready by Kochi Police and Chennai Police in the respective cities. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>What do extreme-duration swimming and extreme duration spaceflight have in common and how are they different? Both are associated with the removal of gravitational loading of the musculoskeletal system and the absence of weight-bearing activities.</p>

<p>Water immersion and supine bed rest ground-based models for spaceflight, initially increase central blood volume as a result of reversed hydrostatic gradients but over time lead to diuresis partially through avail natriuretic peptide stimulation and antidiuretic hormone inhibition.</p>

<p>During spaceflight, the loss of a gravitational gradient results in&nbsp;a similar short-term rise in preload followed by a compensatory decrease in blood volume and a long-term reduction in the period. Without countermeasures, extended spaceflight results in cardiac atrophy and orthostatic intolerance.</p>

<p>A human heart was recently harvested from a patient in San Diego, after which it was transported all the way to Los Angeles in a helicopter.</p>

<p>Now, it's safely inside the body of the recipient. But it went through a lot to get there. The heart actual heart was involved in a helicopter crash, was dropped by a clumsy medic. But it’s still alive and pumping.</p>

<p>There were three people in the chopper, but all three escaped without serious injuries, with the heart intact.</p>

<p>A rescue worker retrieved the organ from the helicopter, and handed it over to a medic at the hospital.</p>

<p>But that wasn’t enough. The hospital worker tripped over a metal plate, possibly debris from the helicopter crash. His colleagues came rushing over to secure the organ.</p>

<p>The hospital said that it had been successfully transplanted, and the patient is also doing very well.</p>
