US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on Saturday said that she had raised donations worth a record $154 million in September for the White House against Donald Trump.

Democrat Hillary Clinton accused Donald Trump Thursday of breaking the law by violating the US trade embargo with Cuba, slamming her rival as dishonest and willing to put his interests before the country.

Clinton said Trump&#39;s business interests in Cuba in the 1990s &quot;appear to violate US law, certainly flout American foreign policy,&quot; as she accused him of misleading American voters.

Newsweek earlier reported that Trump hotel and casino executives spent $68,000 while trying to get a foothold in Cuba during a trip in 1998.

That was well before the United States loosened its decades-old embargo and when expenditures in the Caribbean country were illegal without US government approval.

A former Trump executive who spoke to Newsweek on condition of anonymity said the company did not obtain a government license for its spending before the trip.

The issue plays into Clinton&#39;s main line of attack against her Republican rival.

Her campaign has framed the election as an existential moment for the republic: a choice between Clinton&#39;s safe pair of hands and the latent authoritarianism of an erratic and duplicitous mogul.&nbsp;

The issue could also cause Trump problems in the swing state of Florida -- where anti-communist Cuban Americans make up a vocal slice of the electorate.&nbsp;

Polls show the Democrat and Republican nominees running virtually neck-and-neck there.

Clinton video shows former Miss Universe claim Trump called her 'Miss Piggy'

Hillary Clinton wore&nbsp;a red trouser suit for the first 2016 US Presidential debate while Donald Trump appeared in a blue tie, which was an interesting colour reversal;&nbsp;red is usually associated with the Republicans and blue with the Democrats.&nbsp;

Mr Trump called Hillary &quot;Secretary Clinton&quot; during the&nbsp;debate, moderated by the anchor of NBC Nightly News Lester Holt and conducted at New York&#39;s Hoftsra university, while she called him &quot;Donald&quot;. But that was about as long as the cordiality lasted.&nbsp;

The exchange that came after was testy, with myriad interruptions and Mr Holt struggling to rein in the two nominees.&nbsp;

Shortly into the debate -- divided into three sections:&nbsp;achieving prosperity, America&#39;s direction, and securing America -- Mrs Clinton said Mr Trump&nbsp;began his career with a $14 million handout from his father. Trump responded by saying he had used the money to build a &quot;fantastic&quot; business empire, something that was worth a lot more today than the original sum. &nbsp;

The jabs became more frequent, a lot of them coming surprisingly from Clinton rather than from (considering his record) Trump.&nbsp;

There was a lot riding on this&nbsp;debate, with polls saying as many as 50 per cent&nbsp;of undecided voters would make up their minds about whom they would vote for&nbsp;depending on what they heard from the two candidates.&nbsp;

And in the end -- there are two more debates still to come, on October 9 and 19 -- the polls gave the first debate to Clinton.&nbsp;

A CNN/ORC poll said 62 per cent thought Clinton had won, while 27 per cent thought Trump had. And a poll by Public Policy Polling said 51 per cent thought Clinton had won, while 40 per cent gave it to&nbsp;Trump.

&nbsp;

Good beginning

The pundits said Mr Trump had begun well. And that he was &quot;effective&quot; when he said in the first section -- achieving prosperity -- that businesses, and jobs, were leaving America. (Trade and economy, the pundits said, were areas that Mr Trump felt strongly about. Mr Trump also talked about the enormity of America&#39;s national debt and how the country could no longer afford it.) &nbsp;

When manufacturers leave America but want to continue to sell their products in the country, Mr Trump said, he would tax those products. And, he added, he would work to stop those businesses from leaving in the first place.&nbsp;

Mr Trump said he would do so by slashing the corporate tax rate from 35 to 15 per cent, the biggest tax cut since Ronald Reagan&#39;s in 1981. And that would keep businesses in America and create thousands of jobs, he said.&nbsp;

That of course was a variant of the theory of&nbsp;trickle-down economics,&nbsp;and Mrs Clinton was quick to pounce on it, calling it &quot;trumped up trickle-down&quot;.&nbsp; 
She said her plan -- investment in small businesses because she said that&#39;s what creates new jobs -- had been vetted, unlike Trump&#39;s, and that it would create 10 million jobs&nbsp;while Mr Trump&#39;s would lead to the loss of 3.5 million jobs.&nbsp;

Some of that is misleading.&nbsp;

What the available data actually shows is that the American economy is expected to create 7.2 million jobs despite what Mrs Clinton, should she win, does. So it would be fairer to say Mrs Clinton&#39;s plan is expected to create about 3 million jobs while Mr Trump&#39;s is expected to cut 400,000 jobs.&nbsp;

&nbsp;

Mistakes

Mr Trump got more riled as the debate went on, taking, the pundits said, &quot;the bait&quot; each time Mrs Clinton dangled it in front of him.&nbsp;

The mistakes that he made, they said, included his response to Mrs Clinton when she said he had cheered on the housing collapse of 2008 so that he could make money off the crash.&nbsp;

&quot;That&#39;s business,&quot; Mr Trump replied.&nbsp;

Tinkering with the truth

As might have been expected with Mr Trump, there was also some amount of tinkering with the truth.&nbsp;

He said it was Mrs Clinton who started the controversy over whether or not President&nbsp;Obama had been born in the United States, and that it occurred&nbsp;while they were contending the 2008 Democratic Presidential nomination. He also claimed&nbsp;that her then campaign manager, Patti Solis Doyle, had sent a reporter to Kenya looking for President&nbsp;Obama&#39;s birth certificate. (President&nbsp;Obama has a Kenyan father. He was born in Hawaii, he released his birth certificate in 2011.)&nbsp;

Ms Doyle was on television a few minutes later, refuting Mr Trump&#39;s claim.&nbsp;

Mr Trump also claimed he had not supported the invasion of Iraq, which is untrue.&nbsp;

As expected there were staggering lies, interruptions, pre-scripted zingers and more. But Clinton won by letting Trump appear like himself

Hillary Clinton wore a red trouser suit for the first 2016 US Presidential debate while Donald Trump appeared in a blue tie, which was an interesting colour reversal; red is usually associated with the Republicans and blue with the Democrats. Mr Trump called Hillary "Secretary Clinton" during the debate, moderated by the anchor of NBC Nightly News Lester Holt and conducted at New York's Hoftsra university, while she called him "Donald". But that was about as long as the cordiality lasted. The exchange that came after was testy, with myriad interruptions and Mr Holt struggling to rein in the two nominees. Shortly into the debate -- divided into three sections: achieving prosperity, America's direction, and securing America -- Mrs Clinton said Mr Trump began his career with a $14 million handout from his father. Trump responded by saying he had used the money to build a "fantastic" business empire, something that was worth a lot more today than the original sum. The jabs became more frequent, a lot of them coming surprisingly from Clinton rather than from (considering his record) Trump. There was a lot riding on this debate, with polls saying as many as 50 per cent of undecided voters would make up their minds about whom they would vote for depending on what they heard from the two candidates. And in the end -- there are two more debates still to come, on October 9 and 19 -- the polls gave the first debate to Clinton. A CNN/ORC poll said 62 per cent thought Clinton had won, while 27 per cent thought Trump had. And a poll by Public Policy Polling said 51 per cent thought Clinton had won, while 40 per cent gave it to Trump. Good beginning The pundits said Mr Trump had begun well. And that he was "effective" when he said in the first section -- achieving prosperity -- that businesses, and jobs, were leaving America. (Trade and economy, the pundits said, were areas that Mr Trump felt strongly about. Mr Trump also talked about the enormity of America's national debt and how the country could no longer afford it.) When manufacturers leave America but want to continue to sell their products in the country, Mr Trump said, he would tax those products. And, he added, he would work to stop those businesses from leaving in the first place. Mr Trump said he would do so by slashing the corporate tax rate from 35 to 15 per cent, the biggest tax cut since Ronald Reagan's in 1981. And that would keep businesses in America and create thousands of jobs, he said. That of course was a variant of the theory of trickle-down economics, and Mrs Clinton was quick to pounce on it, calling it "trumped up trickle-down". She said her plan -- investment in small businesses because she said that's what creates new jobs -- had been vetted, unlike Trump's, and that it would create 10 million jobs while Mr Trump's would lead to the loss of 3.5 million jobs. Some of that is misleading. What the available data actually shows is that the American economy is expected to create 7.2 million jobs despite what Mrs Clinton, should she win, does. So it would be fairer to say Mrs Clinton's plan is expected to create about 3 million jobs while Mr Trump's is expected to cut 400,000 jobs. Mistakes Mr Trump got more riled as the debate went on, taking, the pundits said, "the bait" each time Mrs Clinton dangled it in front of him. The mistakes that he made, they said, included his response to Mrs Clinton when she said he had cheered on the housing collapse of 2008 so that he could make money off the crash. US presidential debate 2016: Clinton, Trump accuse each other of falsehoods

Here is the second part of my first post, &ldquo;Why I can&rsquo;t root for Hillary&rdquo;.&nbsp; In this I break down the logic behind not supporting Hillary for the US presidency. &nbsp;

First let me quantify a few qualities I believe a leader in this position should possess.&nbsp; Among others, here are some important ones I will focus on:

	<li>Strength to lead</li>
	<li>Builds trust</li>
	<li>Above suspicion</li>
</ul>

Although I will not question the true character of a person without ever meeting them in person, we do have a decision to make.&nbsp; The information we have to make that decision are: the work a candidate has done and the word he/she says. We try to relate that information to the characteristics we find important to be in that position.&nbsp;

Strength to lead 
The Madam Secretary has shown, on some very important issues that she does not lead the conversation when the topic is difficult.&nbsp;This can be seen pretty clearly on how she handled the decision about the Iraq War and her noncommittal position on equal rights for gay couples. &nbsp;

She voted for the Iraq war even though she didn&rsquo;t really want to send troops there. It can be seen in her senate speech, she voted for the war by saying &ldquo;a vote for it is not a vote to rush to war but a vote to put awesome power in the hands of our president, and we say to him to use these powers wisely.&rdquo;&nbsp; She pretty much voted for the war because it was the popular thing to do, and then excused herself of the consequences of making that decision by laying it all on the president.&nbsp; If it were only up to the president, why would you have a vote and why would the american people send you into office in the first place?

On the issue of gay marriage, it is easy to observe that she was adamantly against gay marriage on principle. She said in the senate, &ldquo;I believe that marriage is not only a bond but a sacred bond between a man and a woman&rdquo;.&nbsp;All of the sudden in a matter of a few years, it became very popular to fight for equality on this issue. Her argument changed overnight.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The theme here is she follows and does not lead.&nbsp;It seems at times her interest in self preservation is more important to her than the principle she is actually fighting for. &nbsp;

Builds Trust 
This too is not hard to assess.&nbsp; It is very well documented in polls that she is not one that people trust.&nbsp; There is a sense of questioning her real intention behind what she says given her history of shifting positions.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Furthermore, and maybe more importantly, part of the job of a leader is to be able to reach out to others who oppose your views to find common ground and move forward together.&nbsp;She is probably at the top of the list of people the opposing camp does not trust nor want to work with.&nbsp;In fact, she so states herself (sometimes with pride) that the opposing side has been after her for a very long time. Well, being an informed voter who wants to make progress, it would not be very smart to chose someone who the opposing side has almost not chance of getting along with to make progressive decision.&nbsp;It seems counter-intuitive to me to vote for her if we want to make progress and end the grid lock that already exists.

Above suspicion 
To be a leader, you have to have a brand that people believe in.&nbsp;So lets just say we look passed the trust issues and reduced probability of working with the other side, what else does she have left in her brand?&nbsp; Well, there just seems to be a number of scandals that are still waiting around to be addressed.&nbsp; She doesn&#39;t seem to have a brand that can ever move beyond suspicion. &nbsp;

First there is the corporate and Wall street money that floods her campaign contributions.&nbsp;We all know, no one is going to give someone millions of dollars and not expect anything in return.&nbsp;Thats pretty cut and dry.

Furthermore, she makes hundreds of thousands of dollars in speeches she gives to these corporate financial institutions.&nbsp;It doesn&rsquo;t take a genius to realise its a &ldquo;pay to play&rdquo; type of game.&nbsp;When questioned about these suspicions, she obviously denies any of that money having any influence on her, yet she refuses to release the transcripts of those speeches.&nbsp;Public policy is not a game to be played for self-interest.&nbsp; \If I was interviewed for a job and I&#39;m asked to validate the courses I&#39;ve taken or the work I&#39;ve done, I don&#39;t have an option to deny that validation. &nbsp;

Now lets get to the even more serious stuff like Benghazi, her email server with classified information, favours given to donors of the Clinton Foundation, etc.&nbsp; You can read about them yourself and have your own opinions but the point is that there are so many scandals that it is hard to ever put her above suspicion.

Those are the reasons why voting for her just doesn&rsquo;t make sense.&nbsp; Some of the common rebuttals to my argument above are that a) a non-vote for her is a vote for Trump (who is probably worse) b) Its always been that way since politicians are hard to trust, so get over it c) There is more at stake, lets just get a woman up in the White House d) Its always a choice between 2 evils, pick your poison, the other is worse.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Why I can't root for Hillary even if Bernie endorses her: Part II

Colin Powell, the former US secretary of state, called Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump a &ldquo;national disgrace&rdquo; and an &ldquo;international pariah&rdquo;, show a series of leaks of email exchanges.&nbsp; 
 
Powell&#39;s emails surfaced on the website DCLeaks.com. The former top diplomat confirmed the exchanges were his but did not comment further.&nbsp; 
 
In the emails leaked on Tuesday and Wednesday, Powell called Trump&#39;s conspiracy theory around President Obama&#39;s birth place racist.&nbsp; 
 
&ldquo;Yup, the whole birther movement was racist,&rdquo; Powell wrote to his former aide, which was first reported by Buzzfeed news.&nbsp; 
&ldquo;That&#39;s what 99 per cent believe,&rdquo; he added.&nbsp;

Hillary Clinton on Wednesday looked to head off further questions about her health, releasing new medical records showing she is &quot;fit to serve&quot; as president and recovering from &quot;mild&quot; pneumonia as she prepares to resume her campaign. 
 
The disclosure came as her Republican rival Donald Trump, in a media-savvy move, released new health data of his own during the taping of a nationally televised medical chat show set to air Thursday. 
 
Both candidates, among the oldest ever to run for the White House, were under intense pressure to share more medical information after Clinton fell ill during a 9/11 ceremony in New York on Sunday and was forced to leave. 
 
Recent opinion polls have shown the gap between the two candidates narrowing, with less than two months to go before the ellection day, and the presidential hopefuls disclosed fresh information in a bid to score points with undecided voters. 
 
In a detailed, two-page &quot;summary update&quot; on Clinton`s health, her personal physician Lisa Bardack wrote that the 68-year-old was bouncing back after a diagnosis of &quot;mild, non-contagious&quot; pneumonia. 
 
She &quot;is recovering well with antibiotics and rest&quot; after being laid low over the weekend, when she suffered from fatigue and a low-grade fever, although her vital signs remained normal, Bardack said. 
 
The Democratic White House nominee &quot;continues to remain healthy and fit to serve as president of the United States,&quot; she wrote, noting she is in &quot;excellent mental condition.&quot; 
 
After Clinton was seen stumbling limp-legged into her vehicle Sunday at Ground Zero, it took several hours for her personal physician to disclose she had been diagnosed with pneumonia two days earlier, drawing criticism of her campaign`s transparency. 
 
Clinton was at home in Chappaqua, New York for a third straight day Wednesday, recovering from a health scare that has rocked her bid to become America&#39;s first woman president. 
 
News of Trump&#39;s appearance on &quot;The Dr. Oz Show&quot; -- though it appeared to reveal little detail -- had earlier flooded the US airwaves on Wednesday, upping the pressure on Clinton to share more health data before returning to the trail Thursday with appearances in North Carolina and Washington.So far the 70-year-old Trump had released only four, gushing paragraphs on his health, written by his doctor Harold Bornstein in December 2015. 
 
Following the revelation of Clinton`s pneumonia, Trump vowed soon to release &quot;very, very specific numbers&quot; from a recent check-up with Bornstein.&nbsp; 
 
Team Trump had raised -- then dropped -- the possibility of releasing them during an appearance on &quot;Dr. Oz&quot;. 
But during the&nbsp;recording of the segment Wednesday morning, Trump finally did present its celebrity host with the results, according to a statement on the show`s website. 
 
In a snippet teased on the site, Mehmet Oz -- who is also a professor of surgery at Columbia University in New York -- is seen asking Trump: 
&quot;If your health is as strong as it seems... why not show your medical records? 
 
&quot;Well, I have really no problem in doing it,&quot; Trump responds. &quot;I have it right here. Should I do it? I don`t care.&quot; 
 
The Republican nominee goes on to pull the documents from his pocket, to cheers and applause from the show audience.A statement from the medical chat show said their hour-long one-one-one interview touched on Trump`s cardiovascular health, family medical history and history of cancer, among other topics. 
 
But the actual details revealed appeared to remain very generic. 
 
According to US media who attended the taping, Oz declared Mr. Trump &quot;slightly overweight&quot; at 267 pounds (120 kilos) for roughly six foot two inches (1.88 meters). 
 
Audience member Kelly Platt -- a pharmacist intern and Trump supporter -- told CNN that Oz deemed Trump`s cholesterol to have come down to a safe level, thanks to medication. 
 
Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook ridiculed Trump`s TV appearance. 
 
&quot;His Doctor Oz charade is as completely unserious as his original joke of a letter written in five minutes,&quot; Mook said. &quot;He continues to hide his taxes and business dealing behind fake excuses. After Clinton was seen stumbling limp-legged into her vehicle Sunday at Ground Zero, it took several hours for her personal physician to disclose she had been diagnosed with pneumonia two days earlier, drawing criticism of her campaign`s transparency. Clinton was at home in Chappaqua, New York for a third straight day Wednesday, recovering from a health scare that has rocked her bid to become America's first woman president. The Republican nominee goes on to pull the documents from his pocket, to cheers and applause from the show audience.A statement from the medical chat show said their hour-long one-one-one interview touched on Trump`s cardiovascular health, family medical history and history of cancer, among other topics. But the actual details revealed appeared to remain very generic. According to US media who attended the taping, Oz declared Mr. Trump "slightly overweight" at 267 pounds (120 kilos) for roughly six foot two inches (1.88 meters). Audience member Kelly Platt -- a pharmacist intern and Trump supporter -- told CNN that Oz deemed Trump`s cholesterol to have come down to a safe level, thanks to medication. Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook ridiculed Trump`s TV appearance. "His Doctor Oz charade is as completely unserious as his original joke of a letter written in five minutes," Mook said. "He continues to hide his taxes and business dealing behind fake excuses. Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton expressed regret after her comment on Trump&#39;s supporters prompted a negative reaction from Republicans. 
 
Clinton was apologetic about calling Trump&#39;s supporters &#39;deplorable&#39; but asserted that she will call out the &#39;bigotry and racist rhetoric&#39; in her rival&#39;s campaign. 
 
&quot;Last night I was &#39;grossly generalistic,&#39; and that&#39;s never a good idea. I regret saying &#39;half&#39; - that was wrong,&quot; Clinton said in a statement. &quot;I won&#39;t stop calling out bigotry and racist rhetoric in this campaign.&quot;

In a hardhitting post published on the blog,&nbsp;Humans of New York, the &nbsp;American politician spoke about how difficult it is for women in politics and the sexism she&#39;s faced from her Harvard law school days to her bid for the presidency. 
 
&nbsp;&ldquo;I&rsquo;m not Barack Obama. I&rsquo;m not Bill Clinton. Both of them carry themselves with a naturalness that is very appealing to audiences. But I&rsquo;m married to one and I&rsquo;ve worked for the other, so I know how hard they work at being natural. It&rsquo;s not something they just dial in. They work and they practice what they&rsquo;re going to say. It&rsquo;s not that they&rsquo;re trying to be somebody else. But it&rsquo;s hard work to present yourself in the best possible way. You have to communicate in a way that people say: &lsquo;OK, I get her.&rsquo; And that can be more difficult for a woman,&quot; says the former first lady in her post.
