"Students should wear formal and decent dress while on campus. They can wear half shirt or a full shirt and trousers. Girls can wear Indian and Western outfits. Students shall not wear any dress which reveals religion or shows cultural disparity. Jeans, t-shirts, revealing dresses and jerseys are not allowed," a notice hung on the college gate said. "Hijab, burka, naqab, stoles, caps and badges can be removed by going to common rooms on the ground floor and then only they can move throughout college campus," the notice dated June 27, 2024, added. Some students said they were denied entry to the campus because they were wearing jeans and t-shirts and were not aware of the new dress code. Nine female students described the prohibition as "arbitrary, unreasonable, bad-in-law, and perverse" in their petition. However, a division bench consisting of Justices AS Chandurkar and Rajesh Patil dismissed the case, stating they were not inclined to overturn the college's decision. The college said that the decision to outlaw the burka, naqab, and hijab was only a disciplinary action for the uniform dress code and had nothing to do with discrimination against Muslims. The hijab ban in schools and colleges of the southern state of Karnataka will continue&nbsp;as the Supreme Court of India on Thursday delivered a split verdict on the appeals against a high court decision upholding the state government's order prohibiting the wearing of&nbsp;headscarves in classes, and referred the matter to the Chief Justice of India for constituting a larger bench.

The two-judge bench differed on whether to uphold the ban on hijab in educational institutions or not.&nbsp;While Justice Hemant Gupta dismissed the appeals against the March 15 verdict of the Karnataka High Court that had refused to lift the ban and held that hijab is not part of "essential religious practice" in Islamic faith, Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia allowed the pleas and observed that it is ultimately a "matter of choice". 
 
"There is divergence of opinion," Justice Gupta, who was heading the bench, said at the outset while pronouncing the verdict on a batch of 26 petitions, reported the news agency PTI. 
 
On March 15, the Karnataka high court had dismissed the petitions filed by a section of Muslim students of the Government Pre-University Girls College in Karnataka's Udupi seeking permission to wear the hijab inside classrooms, ruling it is not a part of the essential religious practice in Islamic faith. 
 
The apex court had reserved its verdict on the pleas on September 22 after hearing arguments in the matter for 10 days. 
 
During the arguments in the top court, a number of counsel appearing for the petitioners had insisted that preventing Muslim girls from wearing the hijab in the classroom will put their education in jeopardy as they might stop attending classes.

The state government's order of February 5, 2022 was challenged by some Muslim girls in the high court.

Karnataka's&nbsp;education minister, BC Nagesh, said that the ban will continue until the Supreme Court makes a final decision.&nbsp;

Supreme Court gives a split verdict on Karnataka hijab row, ban to continue in schools, colleges

The Karnataka High Court ruled on Tuesday that because hijab is not an essential religious practice, students cannot object to reasonable uniform restrictions.

Several petitions contesting the ban on hijab in educational institutions were also dismissed by the Karnataka High Court.

Prohibitory orders were previously issued in Udipi, Shivamogga, and Kalburagi, among other districts in the state, under Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code.

The Hijab controversy began in January of this year, when six students wearing the hijab were allegedly banned from entering the Government PU College in Udupi.

Following this, the females sat outside the college in protest of being denied admission.&nbsp;

Following this, the boys of numerous Udupi colleges began wearing saffron scarves to class.

This demonstration expanded to other sections of the state, resulting in a slew of protests and agitations across the state.

As a result, the Karnataka government declared that all students must wear the uniform and that both the hijab and saffron scarf are prohibited until an expert committee rules on the matter.

The pre-university education board issued a circular on February 5 indicating that students may only wear the school uniform approved by the administration and that no other religious garb will be permitted in colleges.&nbsp;

The decree noted that if management committees do not mandate a uniform, students should dress in a manner that promotes equality and unity while not disrupting the social order.&nbsp;
