As India grapples with a massive heatwave, a weather station in Nagpur city in the Western Indian state of Maharashtra has recorded a mind-boggling temperature of 56 degrees Celsius. The Nagpur AWS (Automatic Weather Station), installed in the middle of the 24-hectare open agricultural field at Ramdaspeth, recorded the sizzling temperature. This comes days after an AWS in North-West Delhi recorded the maximum temperature at 52.9 degrees Celsius; however, officials suspect an error in the station's sensor may have led to the unusual reading.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) earlier on Thursday (May 30) said the highest temperature in the country was recorded at Sri Ganganagar (West Rajasthan) at 48.3°C.

Is data from AWS reliable?

According to experts, a thermometer-based temperature reading is always more reliable than a sensor-based reading. That's why, these AWS are more prone to giving wrong temperature readings if the sensors are placed wrongly or the heat exposure is not appropriate.

India is grappling with one of its worst heatwaves on record, with temperatures touching 50°C in many regions of north India. A 'red' warning has been issued for Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, west Uttar Pradesh, and Gujarat, indicating a "very high likelihood" of heat illness and heat stroke for all age groups.

India swelters under extreme heatwave; experts warn of 'heat risks'

With Delhi reeling under record-breaking temperature this month, a 40-year-old man from Bihar succumbed to heat stroke at Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital.

India heatwave: Did Delhi really witness 52.9°C? IMD says recording could be sensor 'error'

The summer of 2024 has witnessed a concerning rise of temperatures in India, up to a staggering 52 degrees Celsius in some parts. This extreme heat is a consequence of climate change, urbanisation and regional weather patterns. Looking at the previous years' patterns, it reveals a disturbing trend of increasing temperatures and more frequent heatwaves than ever before. Basically, it means the heat is here to stay.

A rising trend

Historically, India has experienced high temperatures in March to July. However, over the past few decades, there has been a noticeable rise in average temperatures and an increase in the frequency and intensity of heat waves.

For instance, the summer of 2016 saw record-breaking temperatures, with Phalodi in Rajasthan hitting 51 degrees Celsius. Subsequent years continued to break records, pointing towards a worrying trajectory of escalating heat all across India.

Impact of heat on health

The impact of this intense heatwave is multifaceted. It poses severe health risks to the population. Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can lead to heatstroke, dehydration, and exacerbation of pre-existing health conditions. The health ministry asked people to drink more water and keep themselves hydrated.

Vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and those with chronic illnesses are particularly at risk. Additionally, the healthcare system can become overwhelmed with the surge in heat-related illnesses.

Impact on the economy

The extreme heat affects agriculture, leading to crop failures and water shortages. According to IMD, wheat production was expected to have fallen by 4.5%, and in some regions, losses could be up to 15% since 2022.

This impacts food security and the livelihoods of farmers who depend on agriculture for their income. The economic consequences are significant, as reduced agricultural productivity can lead to higher food prices and increased poverty levels in rural areas.

Urban heat islands

The heat exacerbates the urban heat island effect, where cities become significantly warmer than their rural counterparts due to human activities and infrastructure.

This can lead to higher energy consumption as people rely more on air conditioning, further straining the power supply and increasing greenhouse gas emissions.

So we can say it’s a constant vicious circle. To reduce the heat we are using air conditioners, and that is one factor leading to increased global warming, which in turn results in more heat.

What can be done?

To mitigate these effects, both immediate and long-term measures are necessary. In the short term, public awareness campaigns can help educate people to protect themselves during heatwaves. Establishing cooling centres and ensuring access to clean drinking water are some of the key factors that can help.

In the long term, addressing climate change through reducing greenhouse gas emissions is essential.

Urban planning should incorporate more green spaces to cool cities naturally, and agricultural practices should be adapted to be more resilient to extreme weather.

Understanding and educating corporate companies about carbon footprints can help as well.

"Doing carbon foot-printing helps businesses become aware of the impact of their activities on the environment. Once the carbon footprint is understood, it becomes easier to set targets for emission reductions,'' said Diya Bose, ESG and sustainability associate at Kuwait-based PKC Advisory.

Kashmir Valley, the paradise on Earth, is witnessing an unprecedented heatwave. Valley has broken a record of 40 years this May with temperatures rising six degrees above the normal. The tourists who are visiting the valley to get respite from the heat wave in the rest of India are disappointed with the high temperatures and scorching heat.

Tourists coming to North Indian states like Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand are highly disappointed with heat waves not sparing these higher reaches as well. Kashmir, this year is no different than the rest of India. People who were expecting to witness icy winds and escape the scorching heat of the rest of the country are shocked to witness heat waves in the Valley as well. The MeT Department has predicted that the heat wave will continue for the next two weeks.

“I did not expect this hot weather at all. I am travelling with thermals, jackets and sweaters and when we landed here we realised that we won't be needing those clothes at all, It's actually as hot as our cities. It's a beautiful city but we are facing so much heat and that's creating a problem,” said Dr Nirav, a tourist.

Another tourist said that they had not heard Kashmir is a hot place. “The weather is hot because I don't live in India. It's quite hot for me, the heatwave but the place is pretty. I have not heard Kashmir being hot, I have always been told it's the Mini Switzerland but still the weather is quite hot and a drastic change. I was aware the weather is going to be very hot as compared to where I am coming from,” said Afneen, a tourist.

The MeT has said that there is no hope of any respite from the heat in the coming days. The weather is not only high in Srinagar city but also at tourist places on higher reaches like Pahalgam, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, Kokernag and Verinag. And the tourists who are visiting the Kashmir Valley are saying that they do not feel like visiting a hill station. Many tourists had come with winter clothes and jackets thinking they would require these clothes.

“It's very hot here and making it very difficult for us to travel around in the city. What to do? We have made plans already and we like the gardens and people are nice but due to the hot weather, it's becoming difficult. We are not enjoying it as much as we wanted to. We did not expect it to be so hot at all,'' said Archana Rastogi, a tourist.

Some tourists were disappointed and said they had read that the weather would be better next week but their holidays would be over by then. “Srinagar is pretty hot today, they are saying the weather will change in the next two days but by then we would have left. I have come here from Delhi, the last time I was here was in 1984. It was cold in Gulmarg, but the city side is very hot and it's enjoyable,” said Yogesh, a tourist.

With heavy snowfall and severe cold wave conditions seen in the middle of April and May, the valley is now facing a heat wave. “It's definitely a little cooler than my city but I did not expect it to be so hot. I expected it to be cooler. My woollens have only been used for my children and apart from that we have not used any,” said Gautam, a tourist. Under the Heat Wave Action Plan, the Jammu and Kashmir government has designated departments and nodal officers to help or assist affected individuals. The administration has urged residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect their health during this period of hot weather.

India: Kashmir Valley witnesses unprecedented heatwave, leaves tourists disappointed

Most parts of northwest India will not get respite from the scorching heat in June, even as there is a brief relief after three days due to western disturbances.

India heatwave: Red alert issued for Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana & Delhi

In some much-needed respite from “severe heat-wave conditions,” parts of Delhi-NCR (National Capital Region) received showers hours after the data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), showed that the Indian capital recorded the highest-ever temperature the country has experienced at 52.3 degrees Celsius, on Wednesday (May 29) afternoon.

Highest-ever temperature recorded in India?

The (IMD) had earlier reported “severe heat-wave conditions,” in the Indian capital after which it recorded an all-time high temperature in the Delhi suburb of Mungeshpur at around 2:30 pm (local time).

However, late Wednesday, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju took to X and said that the reading is "not official yet," adding that the record-breaking temperature in Delhi is "very unlikely."

"Our senior officials in IMD have been asked to verify the news report. The official position will be stated soon," said the Union Minister.

"The maximum temperature over Delhi NCR varied from 45.2° to 49.1°C in different parts of city, Mungeshpur reported 52.9°C as an outlier compared to other stations," said the IMD in a statement.

It added, "It could be due to error in the sensor or the local factor. IMD is examining the data and sensors."

If confirmed, the temperature in Delhi on Wednesday afternoon shattered the previously recorded set on May 19, 2016, when the Indian city of Phalodi, Rajasthan reached a sweltering 51 degrees Celsius.

Speaking about the record-breaking temperature, IMD regional head Kuldeep Srivastava said the city’s outskirts are the first areas to be hit by hot winds from Rajasthan.

“Parts of Delhi are particularly susceptible to the early arrival of these hot winds, worsening the already severe weather. Areas like Mungeshpur, Narela and Najafgarh are the first to experience the full force of these hot winds,” he told news agency PTI.

The temperature was more than nine degrees higher than expected, on the second day of record-breaking heat in the Indian capital.

The IMD has issued a red alert health notice for the city, with an estimated population of around 35 million people, warning of a “very high likelihood of developing heat illness and heat stroke in all ages,” with “extreme care needed for vulnerable people”.

Rain brings some respite to Delhiites

Hours after Delhi recorded the country’s highest-ever temperature at 52.3 degrees Celsius, parts of the Indian capital and the surrounding region received rain bringing some much-needed respite from the scorching heat.

The IMD predicted light-intensity rain and winds in parts of Delhi over the next two hours.

“Light intensity rain/drizzle and winds with speed of 20-30 Km/h would occur over and adjoining areas of isolated places of Delhi and NCR, Kharkhoda, Jhajjar, Sohana, Palwal, Nuh, Aurangabad, Hodal (Haryana) Jattari, Khair (U.P.) during next 2 hours,” said the IMD in a post on X.

While India is no stranger to scorching heat during summer, the increased severity of the heat waves which scientists have attributed to climate change, has worsened the situation and made heat waves longer, more frequent and more intense.

Dehradun records highest-ever temperature

The Indian city of Dehradun, Uttarakhand, on Wednesday also witnessed the highest-ever temperature in its history after the mercury shot up to 43.1 degrees Celsius.

India grappling with sweltering heat

Delhi on Tuesday (May 28) recorded its hottest day of the season so far, with mercury rising to 45.8 degrees Celsius- the third day in a row that the temperature in the city has crossed the 45-degree mark.

Delhi had recorded a high of 45.1°C on Monday, and 45.4°C on Sunday, the previous highs for the season.

The summer saga in Delhi and NCR, or national capital reigion, didn't stop here.

In Narela and Mungeshpur, two weather stations in outer Delhi, the temperature came close to breaching the 50-degree mark on Tuesday, with a maximum temperature of 49.9°C. This is the highest-ever maximum temperature recorded at an observatory in the Capital.

The previous highest maximum at a Delhi station was 49.2°C at Mungeshpur in May 2022, officials said.

Cities in the National Capital Region (NCR) saw the same streak of rising temperatures, with Faridabad recording a harrowing maximum of 48.4°C, followed by Noida at 47.3°C, Gurugram at 47°C, and Ghaziabad at 45.6°C.

The sweltering weather in the Capital is primarily driven by the dry and hot westerly winds, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said Tuesday.

Rains might bring some respite

The Met department has forecast similar weather to prevail in Delhi-NCR on Wednesday as well. But a possible dip in the temperatures is expected on Thursday, triggered by a western disturbance.

IMD also predicted a slight chance of drizzle in some parts of Delhi-NCR on Friday and Saturday, which might bring down the temperature further.

Dry and hot winds from the arid western part of the country, combined with a clear sky, led to a temperature soar on Tuesday in Delhi-NCR, as per IMD officials.

“As temperatures are beginning to rise in the western part of the country, particularly Rajasthan, we are seeing some impact on Delhi too, particularly its western side. Dry, hot westerly winds are blowing from Rajasthan towards Delhi and we also have clear skies in Delhi for the last few days. This is what is leading to such extreme high temperatures,” said Kuldeep Srivastava, a scientist at IMD.

Heatwave or heatwave-like conditions were recorded across Delhi-NCR, starting from Sunday.

IMD classifies it as a heatwave over any region when the maximum temperature is 4.5°C above normal and also above 40°C. It is a "severe heatwave" when the maximum is 6.5°C or more above normal.

India: IMD predicts heatwave days for June, National capital records 48°C

Finland has been experiencing unusually warm weather this May, prompting the Meteorological Institute to issue a heat warning on Monday.

Temperatures across large parts of the Nordic nation, the north of which lies above the Arctic Circle, are due to surge above 27C (81 F) starting on Tuesday (May 28), the institute said.

"This is probably the first time ever we have issued a heatwave warning in May", Iiris Viljamaa from the Finnish Meteorological Institute told AFP, adding that such alerts were normally issued in June at the earliest.

Scientists say that recurring heatwaves are a clear marker of global warming and that these heatwaves are set to become more frequent, longer and more intense.

"The Finnish climate has always seen changes in weather but now climate change is enhancing these kinds of weather phenomena," meteorologist Leena Laakso told AFP.

Research shows "extreme weather events will increase due to climate change," she said.

According to Laakso, the current temperatures were around 10C above average temperatures for May.

The Finnish warning is aimed at alerting people about increased health risks associated with daytime temperatures reaching 27C.

Especially the elderly, people with long-term illnesses and disabilities, babies and young children are advised to take shelter from the heat, the Finnish Institute of Health and Welfare said in a statement.

"In Finland we are used to cool weather and people start to have some health issues in this kind of weather already", said Viljamaa.

On Monday, temperatures between 24 and 28C were recorded, due to a high pressure system over the country, combined with a warm, dry air mass flowing from the south.

Twelve days in May had already exceeded 25 degrees, Viljamaa said.

The town of Salo in southwestern Finland on Saturday registered the country's highest temperature of the year so far, at 28.8C.
