<p>Europe, as per a recent report, is increasingly facing bouts of heat so intense that the human body is unable to cope, and subsequently, deaths related to heat have increased by 30 per cent in the last 20 years.</p>

<p>On Monday (Apr 22), the EU's Copernicus climate monitoring service and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) noted that extreme heat poses particular health risks to outdoor workers, the elderly, and people with existing conditions like cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.</p>

<h2><strong>Last year's extreme heatwave</strong></h2>

<p>In its report, Copernicus and WMO noted that in 2023, heatwaves pushed almost half — 41 per cent — of Southern Europe into strong, very strong or extreme heat stress. This, AFP reports, was the biggest area of Europe under such conditions in any day on record.</p>

<p>Last year, as far as the records go, was the hottest year globally, and Europe is the world's fastest-warming continent.</p>

Deaths due to heat at all-time high; heatwaves in Europe linked to 30% increase in fatalities

<p>A recent study has found that since 1970, both March and April became warmer across India, raising the likelihood of uncomfortable and possibly dangerous heat conditions. As a result, in some states, temperatures around Holi (Indian festival of colours)&nbsp;were more likely to exceed 40 degrees Celsius—a rarity in the early 1970s.</p>

<p>The study, conducted by Climate Central, a US-based group of scientists and communicators, analysed daily temperatures from January 1, 1970, to December 31, 2023, as reported by PTI.</p>

<h2><strong>Here are the findings</strong></h2>

<p>According to the study, the northern and western regions of India experienced the most significant warming during March compared to 1970 levels. Jammu and Kashmir exhibited the highest increase in average temperature, at around 2.8 degrees Celsius. In April, warming was more evenly distributed across India, with Mizoram recording the largest increase of approximately 1.9 degrees Celsius since 1970.</p>

<p>Looking at temperatures around Holi, the study noted that in the early 1970s, only three states—Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Bihar—had over a five per cent&nbsp;chance of experiencing temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius in late March. Presently, this count has risen to encompass nine states—incorporating the initial three states, along with Rajasthan, Gujarat, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh—with Maharashtra showing a significant 14 per cent&nbsp;probability.</p>

<p>The researchers analysed 51 cities across India and found that 37 of them, or almost 73 per cent, now have at least a one per cent chance of reaching temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius or higher. Additionally, 11 cities have a probability of 10 per cent&nbsp;or more. Bilaspur currently has the highest risk at 31 per cent, which is 2.5 times higher than in the 1970s.</p>

<p>Emergency services, on Thursday, took to X and said that they had requested assistance from the army’s emergency unit after the blaze which ignited on Wednesday afternoon (Oct 4) was categorised as a high-level emergency.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Firefighters backed by six water-dropping helicopters were battling the blaze, as per media reports, after the wildfire broke out in an area of steep ravines in the northeast of the island. According to the government of Tenerife, the same area was badly ravaged by the huge wildfire in August.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The seat of the fire “has been stabilised, we are seeing how it evolves to determine if in a few hours residents can return to their homes,” Blanca Perez, the island’s councillor in charge of emergencies, told local radio.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>‘Gone well’</strong></h2>

<p>Speaking at a business event in Madrid on Thursday, the Canary Islands regional leader, Fernando Clavijo said that while the August fire had been brought under control, they had never been completely put out as embers were still burning in the forest.</p>

He said the temperatures would be "quite widely spread" and warned that Wednesday night could be "a tropical night" with temperatures likely not dropping below 20 degrees Celsius.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the Met Office, temperatures could hit 31 degrees Celsius on Friday. However, the weather might become more cloudy. There are some chances of rain in North-West Scotland. "There's no indication at the moment of another strong heatwave after this," stated Claydon. As per him, the conditions might change over the weekend.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The temperatures could return to normal by the middle of next week. Due to climate change, heat waves have become more common and harsher. In 2022, the UK recorded temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius for the first time. Some scientists suggest such scorching weather is "virtually impossible without climate change."</p>

<p>The Met Office has also revealed why some "picturesque" sunsets occurred in the UK. Forecasters believe they were due to the "Saharan dust," expected to reach sections of the country later this week.</p>
