Dr Sudhir Kumar, senior consultant neurologist, Apollo Hospital, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad took to Twitter recently to report the incident and said the woman showed dizziness, nausea and vomiting symptoms initially, “which started during her hair wash with shampoo in a beauty parlour”.

What is Beauty Parlour Stroke Syndrome? 
 
The term was first coined by Michael Weintraub in 1993, in the Journal of American Medical Association after observing stroke symptoms in two elderly women after shampoo treatment in a beauty parlour. Salons across the world, typically bend the client's neck backwards while seated on a chair, resting the nape of the neck on the sink in order to wash their hair.&nbsp; 
 
Medically known as Vertebro-basilar insufficiency, the disorder is also referred to as Salon Sink Syndrome and Salon Wash-basin Syndrome. 
In 2016, The Guardian reported about a case where a man was paid compensation after he collapsed two days after getting his haircut at a salon in Brighton, UK. 
 
Symptoms of this syndrome can include severe dizziness, loss of balance and facial numbness. The body part which is under the control of the brain part that does not get oxygen also suffers damage. Not just women, but men too can suffer from this syndrome especially those who go for neck messages.&nbsp; 
 
However, Dr Kumar noted that stroke affecting vertebro-basilar artery territory can occur during shampoo hair-wash in a beauty parlour, especially in women with other atherosclerotic risk factors and undetected vertebral hypoplasia. “Prompt recognition and treatment can prevent disability," he added.

Should one stop getting a hair wash at salons? 
 
When asked what people can do to avoid such a stroke, Dr Sudhir Kumar said, “Women don’t have to stop going to parlours or washing their hair there! They can avoid keeping their necks in an awkward hyperextension. Or they can use a towel or for support instead of completely extending their necks. Sometimes these procedures can go on for 30 to 35 minutes, so that can be shortened.” 
 
In an interview to Self Magazine, Aneesh Singhal, MD, associate professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School and vice chair of Neurology at Massachusetts General Hospital noted that this type of stroke is not only restricted to hair wash or neck message at salons but can also occur to people when they’re at the dentist, playing tennis, undergoing chiropractic neck manipulation, and even while doing yoga. 
 
Singhal states that salon&nbsp;visits need not be curtailed but he advised avoiding "activities where the neck would be malpositioned for a long period of time—more than 10 or 15 minutes, but it could be even less."&nbsp;

"Companies are operating to what the law allows," she added. "There is extensive promotion and no way to know if they're being sold to people under 18.

"We need a regulatory framework that captures all nicotine products."

In a statement, the Department of Health and Social Care said: "We continue to review the impact of nicotine pouches, including by commissioning an expert committee to investigate their risks."

The Committee on Toxicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment (COT) is due to publish a report later this autumn.

A spike in gang violence has made it unsafe for people to leave their communities and a lack of fuel has shut down public transportation, gas stations and other key businesses including water supply companies.

Enfant sat next to her son’s body as she recalled how Joliva told her he was feeling sick earlier this week. She had already warned him and her two other sons not to bathe or wash clothes in the sewage-contaminated waters that ran through a nearby ravine in their neighborhood — the only source of water for hundreds in that area.

Enfant insisted that her sons buy water to wash clothes and add chlorine if they were going to drink it. As Joliva grew sicker, Enfant tried to care for him on her own.

“I told him, ‘Honey, you need to drink the tea,’” she recalled. “He said again, ‘I feel weak.’ He also said, ‘I am not able to stand up.’”

Cholera is a bacteria that sickens people who swallow contaminated food or water, and it can cause severe vomiting and diarrhea, in some cases leading to death.

Haiti’s first major brush with cholera occurred more than a decade ago when UN&nbsp;peacekeepers introduced the bacteria into the country’s biggest river via sewage runoff at their base. Nearly 10,000 people died and thousands of others were sickened.

The cases eventually dwindled to the point where the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/what-is-the-origin-of-the-covid-19-virus-new-report-supports-lab-leak-theory-529062">World Health Organization</a> was expected to declare Haiti cholera-free this year.

But on Oct. 2, Haitian officials announced that cholera had returned.

At least 40 deaths and 1,700 suspected cases have been reported, but officials believe the numbers are much higher, especially in crowded and unsanitary slums and government shelters where thousands of Haitians live.

Worsening the situation is a lack of fuel and water that began to dwindle last month when one of Haiti’s most powerful gangs surrounded a key fuel terminal and demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Gas stations and businesses including water companies have closed, forcing an increasing number of people to rely on untreated water.

Shela Jeune, a 21-year-old hot dog vendor whose 2-year-old son has cholera, said she buys small bags of water for her family but doesn’t know if it’s treated. She carried him to the hospital where he remains on IV fluids.

“Everything I give him to eat, he just throws it up,” she said.

Jeune was among dozens of mothers seeking treatment for their children on a recent morning.

Lauriol Chantal, 43, recounted a similar story. Her 15-year-old son would vomit as soon as he finished eating, prompting her to rush him to the treatment center.

While at the center, her son, Alexandro François, told her he felt hot.

“He said to me ... ’Mama, could you take me outside to wash me or pour water over my head?’” she said.

She obliged, but suddenly, he collapsed in her arms. The staff ran over to help.

Children younger than age 14 make up half of cholera cases in Haiti, according to UNICEF, with officials warning that growing cases of severe malnutrition also make children more vulnerable to illness.

Haiti’s poverty also has worsened the situation.

“When you are unable to get safe drinking water by tap in your own home, when you don’t have soap or water purifying tablets and you have no access to health services, you may not survive cholera or other waterborne diseases,” said Bruno Maes, Haiti’s UNICEF representative.

Perpety Juste, a 62-year-old grandmother, said one of her three grandchildren became ill this week as she fretted about how their situation might have led to her sickness.

“We spent a lot of days without food, I cannot lie,” she said. “Nobody in my house has a job.”

Juste, who lives with her husband, five children and three grandchildren, said she used to work as a house cleaner until the homeowners fled Haiti.

The increasing demand for help is squeezing Doctors Without Borders and others as they struggle to care for patients with limited fuel.

“It’s a nightmare for the population, and also for us,” said Jean-Marc Biquet, a project coordinator with the organization. “We have two more weeks of fuel.”

Life is paralyzed for many Haitians, including Enfant, as she mourned her son’s death. She wants to bury him in her southern coastal hometown of Les Cayes, but cannot afford the 55,000 gourdes ($430) it would cost to transport his body.

Enfant then fell quiet and gazed into the distance as she continued to sit next to her son’s body — too stunned, she said, to stand up.

While these gummy vitamins are helpful for children and tablet-averse adults who have trouble swallowing normal pills, their surging popularity has raised questions regarding their benefits to one's health.&nbsp;

Gummy vitamins have some of the common ingredients found in most candies which include, gelatin, cornstarch, water, sugar, and added food colourings. While they also contain several vitamins, and minerals such as calcium and vitamin D many people consume them to make sure they are getting all the nutrients they need, however, research suggests that those who eat a balanced diet do not need them.&nbsp;

On the other hand, doctors and dietitians have also warned against its sugar content which is bad for one's teeth. Additionally, while these gummies have some nutritional value, they do not have the regulatory standards that actual medication does.&nbsp;

Neha Vyas, a family medicine physician at Cleveland Clinic, indicated that gummy vitamins contain an average of two to eight grams of sugar per serving, while the recommended dosage is at least one or two pieces, said a report by The Wall Street Journal.&nbsp;

This kind of increased consumption of sugar is reportedly also linked to obesity, heart disease and dental cavities. Therefore, the American Heart Association suggests that a man’s daily intake of sugar should not exceed 37.5 grams whereas for women it should not go beyond 25 grams, and recommends under six teaspoons for children (aged between 2-18 years) per day.&nbsp;

As per experts, some of the tear-producing glands in the eyelids may suffer irreparable damage if the problem is not treated. &nbsp;

When asked about how it actually feels, the majority of people have described it as a sensation that feels like when you slice onions.&nbsp;

According to a specialist Sarah Farrant, an optometrist and dry eye specialist said that now many primary-aged children are visiting her for the eye problem.

She attributed the cause to the increased screen time because it leads to slower blinking.&nbsp;

According to the interim chief, the executive said, "Asking hospitals to limit their use of blood is not a step we take lightly. This is a vital measure to protect patients who need blood the most."&nbsp;

Keen to develop a nasal Covid vaccine, the researchers feel that the current Covid vaccine works fairly well at preventing illness, but lacks in the field of stopping the spread of the virus.&nbsp;

The first trial to assess the efficacy involved 30 people along with 12 who received the spray vaccine as a booster but were not previously vaccinated. As per a report in eBioMedicine, the researchers observed no safety issues, but they found that the vaccine produced weak immune responses.

The researchers further trained to measure levels of mucosal and systematic antibodies after receiving the vaccine in the bloodstream and respiratory system.&nbsp;

It was discovered that very few mucosal antibodies were present after the first dose of the vaccine. A handful was later discovered after the second dose of the vaccine but was rare after those seen in virus infection.&nbsp;

The researchers also said that very few levels of antibodies were detected against Covid after one or two doses. However, the antibodies were quite high in number after two jabs of the same vaccine.

To conclude, it was witnessed&nbsp;that the major drawback of the nasal spray machine is that majority of its droplets either get destroyed or are swallowed in the stomach rather than reaching the immune system or the nose.&nbsp;

The researchers are all set to develop a more concentrated and advanced vaccine. They said that though&nbsp;the test was a failure, the data collected is very helpful for the future.&nbsp;

The WHO earlier informed the Drugs Controller General of India that it is providing medical assistance to Gambia. After the deaths were reported, the health organisation suspected the use of medicines to be the prime reason for the deaths. It highlighted that medicines might have been contaminated with diethylene glycol or ethylene glycol and later confirmed the samples to be positive as well.&nbsp;

As per WHO's tentative result, four out of the 23 samples found diethylene glycol or ethylene glycol.

The CDSCO said that it responded to the WHO immediately and took up the matter with the authorities.&nbsp;

In a conversation with the Guardian, Birring said, "If Gefapixant becomes available, it could be a game-changer in respiratory medicine." He further added that it is a very effective treatment and will work for most patients.&nbsp;

Birring said that since "Gefapixant" is the first new drug that has been approved in over 50 years, there's a high possibility that thousands of people will be suitable for this treatment.&nbsp;

For the trial, every day, individuals were given 15 mg&nbsp;to 45 mg&nbsp;twice daily. The researchers found that giving 45 mg&nbsp;to people brought a major reduction in cough. The results of the trials were published in the Lancet.&nbsp;

However, in contrast, over half of the patients found that their taste ability was either affected or disappeared when they were consuming the drug.&nbsp;

President Joe Biden has nominated US Surgeon General Dr Vivek Murthy to serve as the country's representative on the executive board of the World Health Organisation. 
Dr Murthy, 45, will serve in the new position alongside his continued duties as the US Surgeon General, the White House said in a statement.

He was confirmed by the US Senate in March 2021 to serve as the 21st Surgeon General of the country. He previously served as the 19th Surgeon General under President Barack Obama.

As the nation's doctor, the Surgeon General's mission is to help lay the foundation for a healthier country, relying on the best scientific information available to provide clear, consistent and equitable guidance and resources for the public.

"While serving as the 21st Surgeon General, Dr Murthy is focused on drawing attention to and working across government to address a number of critical public health issues, including the growing proliferation of health misinformation, the ongoing youth mental health crisis, well-being and burnout in the health worker community, and social isolation and loneliness," said the White House.

As the Vice Admiral of the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, Dr Murthy also commands a uniformed service of over 6,000 dedicated public health officers, serving the most underserved and vulnerable populations.

The first Surgeon General of Indian descent, Dr Murthy, was raised in Miami and is a graduate of Harvard, the Yale School of Medicine, and the Yale School of Management, the White House said.

In a meeting held last month, the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) had emphasised not lowering guard against COVID due to upcoming festivals even as it decided to do away with wearing face masks after September 30.

According to the minutes of the meeting held on September 22, and accessed by PTI, a notification revoking the Rs 500 fine on not wearing masks is expected to be issued by the health department on Wednesday.

The decision to revoke the mask mandate was anything but unanimous and differences abound, as per the minutes of the meeting issued by Sushil Singh, special CEO, disaster management.

Chief Secretary of Delhi Naresh Kumar had in the meeting said that the current situation was comfortable but the guard against Coronavirus could not be lowered as the variants keep coming up.

The health ministry has advised caution in view of multiple festivals from September 26 to December 31 and likely mass gatherings across the country.

Niti Aayog member Dr V K Paul had in the meeting emphasised that surveillance was still needed as the virus is still present and its mutations and variants have emerged from time to time.

Dr Rajendra Singh, member NDMA, came up with a suggestion that wearing of masks be continued up to November 15 in view of coming festivals.

Delhi Police Commissioner sought clarity and complete set of instructions on the enforcement of mask mandate.

The Chief Secretary suggested that a 'self discipline mode'&nbsp;may be tried now as the public is well aware of its responsibilities and what constitutes a COVID-appropriate behaviour.

Revenue minister Kailash Gahlot in the same meeting reiterated that there were "practical difficulties" in the enforcement of the mask mandate, and stressed the need to relax the rule.

Kunal Satyarthi, joint secretary NDMA, agreed with him saying that wearing of masks may not be advisable in the present circumstances, the minutes said.

The meeting chaired by LG V K Saxena and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in attendance, summarily agreed that though wearing of masks was useful in maintaining a Covid -appropriate behaviour, the order of compulsory wearing of masks under the Epidemic Act may not be extended beyond September 30.

The DDMA also agreed that the fine of Rs 500 for not wearing masks in public places will stand withdrawn after September 30, it added.

Amid the crush, Naveed Ahmed, a young doctor in the emergency response department of the Abdullah Shah Institute of Health Sciences, is surrounded by five or six people trying to get his attention.

The 30-year-old keeps his cool as stretched emergency services struggle to cope with thousands of patients arriving from miles around after their homes were submerged under water when heavy rains fell in August and September.'

"We become so overworked at times that I feel like collapsing and going on an intravenous drip," a smiling Ahmed told Reuters as he sipped a cup of tea in the hospital's canteen during a short break.

"But it's because of the prayers of these patients that we keep going."

Ahmed is on the frontline of the battle to limit sickness and death across southern&nbsp;Pakistan, where hundreds of towns and villages were cut off by rising waters. The deluge has affected around 33 million people in a country of 220 million.

Most of the estimated 300-400 patients arriving at his clinic each morning, many of them children, are suffering from malaria and diarrhoea, although with winter approaching, Ahmed fears other illnesses will become more common.

"I hope people displaced by the floods can get back to their homes before winter; (if not) they will be exposed to respiratory illnesses and pneumonia living in tents," he said.

Hundreds of thousands of&nbsp;Pakistanis who fled their homes are living in government camps set up to accommodate them, or simply out in the open.

Stagnant floodwaters, spread over hundreds of square kilometres (miles), may take two to six months to recede in some places, and have already led to widespread cases of skin and eye infections, diarrhoea, malaria, typhoid and dengue fever.

The crisis hits&nbsp;Pakistan&nbsp;at a particularly bad time. With its economy in crisis, propped up by loans from the International Monetary Fund, it does not have the resources to cope with the longer term effects of the flooding.

Nearly 1,700 people have been killed in the floods caused by heavy monsoon rains and melting glaciers.&nbsp;Pakistan&nbsp;estimates the cost of the damage at $30 billion, and the government and United Nations have blamed the catastrophe on climate change.

Over 340 people have died of diseases caused by the floods, authorities have said.

According to the health department of Sindh province, the worst-affected region, 17,285 cases of malaria have been confirmed since July 1.

Anticipating the risk of disease outbreaks after the rescue and relief phase of the floods, the Sindh government is trying to hire more than 5,000 health professionals on a temporary basis in districts most at risk.

"We are short of human resources considering the magnitude of the burden of disease following the unprecedented rains and floods," Qasim Soomro, provincial lawmaker and parliamentary health secretary of the Sindh government, told Reuters.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concern about an impending "second disaster" of water-borne diseases spreading across the country, particularly in Sindh.

In the hospital ward in Sehwan, a young man with a high fever was having fits on a bed outside the main emergency room. His mother ran to Ahmed, who attended the patient and asked a male nurse to place cold pads on his forehead.

The air was heavy with humidity, and there were not enough air conditioners to cool temperatures in overcrowded corridors lined with beds. The wards were filled to capacity and a handful of beds had more than one patient on them.

Ahmed, a graduate of a university in China, described the pressure he and other medics were under.

"With such influx, we ... cannot wait for test results for each patient to start the treatment," he said, adding he begins administering medicine for malaria as soon as he sees some symptoms.

The institute in Sehwan serves people from neighbouring towns and districts, including those living in camps while the waters recede and rebuilding can begin.

Jagan Shahani's daughter fell unconscious after getting a fever around a week ago. He used a boat to get out of his flooded village of Bhajara and flagged down a car on the nearby road that took them to Sehwan.

"Doctors said she had malaria," he said late last week. "This is our fourth night here. There is nothing here to eat but Allah has been very kind to provide everything," added Shahani, whose 15-year-old daughter Hameeda is now recovering.

On the outskirts of town, hundreds of displaced people queued up for rations being distributed at Lal Bagah, a tent settlement where displaced families prepared tea and breakfast on open fires.

The Indus Highway that runs past Sehwan is dotted with tent camps for displaced people.

Some are beginning to return home where waters have retreated far enough, but not all are so lucky.

"There is no one here to help me but Allah. I pray to Allah that the waters recede in my village and I can return to my home," said Madad Ali Bozdar.

Bozdar, 52, is from Bubak, a town located on the north-eastern bank of Manchar Lake. Speaking on Friday, he said his village was still under 10 to 12 feet (3-4 metres) of water. He expected to be able to go back in around two months' time.
