The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) on Saturday resumed its scientific survey work at the Gyanvapi mosque here to determine whether the 17th-century mosque was constructed over a pre-existing structure of a Hindu temple. 
 
Five members of the Muslim side also participated in the survey. Its advocate Tauheed Khan said advocates of the Intezamia Masjid Committee Akhlaq and Mumtaz accompanied the survey team. The Muslim side did not participate in the survey on Friday. 
 
Government counsel Rajesh Mishra, who was with the ASI survey team during the day-long exercise a day before as well, on Saturday said the team started work in the morning and it would continue at 5 pm.

Lawyer for the Hindu side Sudhir Tripathi claimed, "Not idols, but fragments of idols have been found in the debris. We are quite hopeful that idols will also be recovered... The Intezamia Masjid Committee is cooperating... They gave the keys which they were not giving earlier." 
 
Another lawyer of the Hindu side Subhash Nandan told reporters that the ASI team is examining the central hall under the main dome. 
 
Late on Friday night, joint secretary of the Intezamia Masjid Committee Muhammad Yasin said in a letter that they would cooperate in the survey work, honouring the orders of the Supreme Court.

 
"Keeping in mind the Supreme Court's orders refusing to stay the survey work, the Anjuman Intezamia Masajid has unanimously decided that while honouring the orders of the Supreme Court, it will cooperate with the ASI in the survey work," he said.

"It is hoped that the orders of the honourable court will be impartially complied with, and our mosque will not be damaged. Along with this, our religious rights will remain protected as per previous orders of the court," Yasin said, appealing to people to maintain peace. 
 
A team of experts from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K) is assisting the ASI in the survey work. 
 
IIT-K Director Abhay Karandikar told PTI over the phone that a team from the institute's Earth Sciences department are in Varanasi and Professor Javed N Malik of the department will join soon after returning to the country. 
 
The Supreme Court on Friday refused to stay the Allahabad High Court order on the ASI survey of the Gyanvapi mosque, an exercise that the Muslim side says will "reopen wounds of the past".

AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said he hoped that the floodgates for a "thousand Babris" (Babri Masjid) will not be opened after the ASI reports are made public after the survey. 
 
"#Gyanvapi ASI reports are made public, who knows how things will pan out. One hopes that neither 23rd December nor 6th December will repeat. The observation of the Supreme Court in the Ayodhya judgement regarding the sanctity of the Places of Worship Act must not be dishonoured. The hope is that the floodgates for a thousand Babris will not be opened," he tweeted. 
 
The apex court bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, however, asked the ASI not to carry out any invasive act during the survey.

This ruled out excavations, which the Varanasi court had said can be conducted if necessary. 
 
The Supreme Court's nod on Friday came just hours after an ASI team had already resumed the detailed scientific survey ordered by the Varanasi district court on July 21. 
 
The Anjuman Intezamia Masjid committee had challenged the district court's order in the Allahabad High Court, which dismissed its petition on Thursday. The Muslim body then quickly approached the Supreme Court. 
 
On Friday, the Varanasi court also granted the ASI an additional month to complete the survey, extending its original deadline from Friday to September 4.

The Allahabad High Court on Thursday (July 27) stayed the Archaeological Survey of India's (ASI) survey of the Gyanvapi Mosque premises till August 3. A report by Live Law said that on August 3, the high court would pronounce its order on the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee's challenge to the Varanasi district judge's July 21 order for ASI survey of the mosque.

The Allahabad High Court on Thursday (July 27) stayed the Archaeological Survey of India's (ASI) survey of the Gyanvapi Mosque premises till August 3. A report by Live Law said that on August 3, the high court would pronounce its order on the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid Committee's challenge to the Varanasi district judge's July 21 order for ASI survey of the mosque. The bench of Chief Justice Pritinker Diwaker passed this order after hearing both parties. On Wednesday, the Anjum committee argued before the high court that the ASI was never a part of the suit. Despite this, the Varanasi district judge directed the ASI to survey mosque premises. The committed also contended that once the scientific survey was done, the mosque premises would be destroyed, the Live Law report added. Anjum committee's lawyer reiterates apprehension over structure being damaged During Thursday's hearing, the senior counsel appearing for the Anjum committee reiterated his apprehension that the mosque premises could be damaged during survey. He apprised the Allahabad High Court bench of the presence of ASI officials at the disputed site with spades. The lawyer highlighted that no issues were framed in the court and yet a survey was ordered in the case. The lawyer further argued the court could be used to collect evidence on behalf of a litigant who has no evidence, and since the plaintiffs admitted they had no evidence and now they were seeking evidence through the court by seeking direction from a third party. Responding to the lawyer's concerns, Chief Justice Pritinker asked if the spades available at the spot were used. The lawyer then said they were not used as a stay order of the court was in operation. Pritinker added the apprehension of the Anjuman Committee could not come in the way of the plaintiffs. However, the bench asked the Uttar Pradesh government to take note of the apprehensions (of the committee). At the centre of this whole case is the contention by a group of Hindu petitioners that there is 'Shivling' in the mosque complex that it wants to worship. The Muslim representatives, however, argued that it was a fountain. During Thursday's hearing, the chief justice also expressed concerns about the delay in the disposal of the suit file by four Hindu worshippers last year seeking year-round worshipping rights inside the mosque. The Allahabad High Court on Wednesday (July 26th) extended the stay on the survey of the premises of the Gyanvapi mosque. The stay on a survey by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has been extended till Thursday, 5 PM.

Chief Justice Pritinker Diwaker posted the matter for further hearing on Thursday after hearing a plea by Anjuman Intezamia Masjid. The committee which manages the mosque had challenged the Varanasi District Judge's July 21 ASI Survey order of the Gyanvapi Mosque.

The court, as per news agency PTI, said that the stay on ASI survey will continue till the hearing.

"Interim order by the apex court to continue," said the bench as it rose for the day.

Earlier, the court reportedly expressed "strong doubts" regarding the survey work to be carried out by the ASI. This observation was made by Chief Justice Pritinker Diwaker after the Archeological Survey&nbsp;attempted to clarify that the Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) method — which would not damage the mosque — will be used&nbsp;in the survey of the Gyanvapi Mosque premises.&nbsp;However, it failed to convince the court.

<h2>Anjuman Intezamia Masjid committee vs Hindu women worshippers</h2>

On July 24th (Tuesday) the Anjuman Intezamia Masjid committee moved the High Court, challenging the order of the Varanasi Court directing the ASI to survey the mosque premises — except wuzukhana.&nbsp;The Varanasi Court's order came after an application by four Hindu women worshippers who were part of a suit seeking year-round access to worship inside the mosque premises.&nbsp;

Anjuman Intezamia Masjid committee reportedly argued that the ASI was never a party to the suit or noticed by the Varanasi court. It said that despite this, the District Court ordered the ASI to survey the mosque premises.

It also contended that the survey, if done in the way the Hindu women worshippers want, will destroy the entire mosque premises. 
 
Consequently, the Chief Justice directed the ASGI to call an ASI official from Varanasi by 4:30 pm with an affidavit explaining the details and methodology of the proposed survey.&nbsp; 
 
Pursuant to the court's order, an affidavit was filed by the ASI official stating therein that survey work would be carried out without causing any damage to the structure. It added that a team from IIT Kanpur will be called for a radar survey and GPR survey.&nbsp; 
 
Taking into account this submission, the Court orally remarked that hypothetically, even if it is felt that anything wrong can be done by the state or the ASI, the court can always stop them. However, Senior Counsel Naqvi appearing for Anjuman Committee questioned the "hurry" in this case.&nbsp;

He submitted that everything was being done at the "speed of the Jet". Due to the paucity of time, the Court deemed it fit to extend the stay order and post the matter for further hearing on Thursday.
