According to climate activists, the water resources being used to maintain golf courses can be put to better use in a country where farmers are struggling due to the ongoing drought crisis. In a video message, Extinction Rebellion claimed “golf in Spain uses more water than the cities of Barcelona and Madrid combined”. The group also claimed that one hole of a golf course requires 100,000 litres of water every day to maintain the field around it.

XR further claims that only 0.6 per cent of the country’s population plays golf, which doesn’t justify the use of massive amounts of water for maintenance.

<h2>Drought crisis in Spain</h2>

According to Ricardo Torrijo, a spokesperson for AEMET, the Spanish national weather service, Spain has been facing a prolonged drought since the end of 2022. The situation has worsened in recent months, with March experiencing only 36 per cent of the average monthly rainfall, marking it as the second driest March of the century.&nbsp;

The trend continued into April, which has the potential to become the driest month ever recorded in Spain.

"We had no plans to stage any of our championships at Turnberry and will not do so in the foreseeable future," the R&amp;A said in a statement adding the championship will not return unless the controversies die. "We will not return until we are convinced that the focus will be on the championship, the players and the course itself and we do not believe that is achievable in the current circumstances."

In additon to this, the&nbsp;PGA of America has also cancelled plans of hosting the 2022 PGA Championship at the&nbsp;Trump National at Bedminster, New Jersey, USA claiming associating with Trump would be bad for the organisation's reputation, especially after the Capitol riots and the impending impeachment of the outgoing President.

"It became clear to us that our brand was at stake," PGA of America chief executive officer Seth Waugh told local gold channels.&nbsp;"We thought we were putting at risk that mission if we were to hold the tournament at Trump Bedminster."

New Jersey's Trump Bedminster had hosted the 2017 US Women's Open, despite several protests outside the club that year, and was also&nbsp;awarded the 2022 PGA in 2014 by the PGA of America. However, now after the club pulled out of the event's venue, the deccision is being labelled as 'politically motivated' by Trump's aids and supporters.

R&A and others declare no more golf championships at Trump Turnberry course

Visitors to one British cathedral this summer won't find the usual set up inside, instead, the chairs have been pushed back in Rochester Cathedral to make space for a mini-golf course. The nave of Rochester Cathedral in Kent has been transformed into a nine-hole bridge-themed mini-golf course which is free for visitors to play on. Despite positive feedback from those enjoying the new attraction, the reaction has been mixed, with some locals taking to Twitter to voice their concerns.
