First, the Golden Globes were going to go toe-to-toe with the Critic’s Choice Awards on Sunday night. Now, after the critics’ ceremony was postponed amid the omicron surge, the Globes will have Sunday night all to themselves for a big, splashy …

… audience-less, glorified PowerPoint presentation. Which may or may not be livestreamed.

After NBC bowed out as the broadcaster for this year’s event over ethical missteps and a lack of diversity at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group of journalists that puts on the Golden Globes, the ceremony Sunday will be decidedly low-key. A small number of vaccinated, boosted, masked, socially distanced HFPA members and other guests will attend the 90-minute event, kicking off at 9 p.m. Eastern time (6 p.m. Pacific) in the ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California. There will be no red carpet or outside media covering the night in person.

It seems the event will be more like a graduation ceremony than the freewheeling party of years past.

Muted format aside, there are still some names to watch: Jane Campion is the favorite to take home her first Golden Globe in the best director category for “The Power of the Dog,” Will Smith and Kristen Stewart could build Oscar momentum with wins for “King Richard” and “Spencer,” and “West Side Story” could score big with wins in several categories.

Here’s a recap of how we got here and what to expect.

What exactly is the controversy surrounding the Hollywood Foreign Press Association?

In February, the Los Angeles Times published an investigation that uncovered infighting, possible financial missteps, questionable journalistic ethics and a jarring lack of diversity in the HFPA’s ranks. (Not a single one of the organization’s 80-plus voting members, the paper found, were Black.) A New York Times article published a few days later explored the finances of the group, a tax-exempt nonprofit, and reported that it had paid more than $3 million in salaries and other compensation to its members and staff, and that a tax filing showed it had paid $1.3 million in travel costs one year.

The scandal-ridden group also came under scrutiny after reports revealed that more than one-third of the HFPA members had been flown on a luxury press trip to the French set of the Netflix series “Emily in Paris” in 2019, after which the critically panned comedy picked up two Golden Globes nominations.

How has the HFPA responded?

During the 2021 Golden Globes telecast in February, leaders of the group committed to diversifying their membership — a vague, underwhelming overture that fell flat in Hollywood. Then, after NBC announced in May that it would not air the 2022 ceremony, the HFPA released a statement that said it was working to reform itself with “extreme urgency” and offered a timeline for changes. In the months since, the HFPA has hired its first chief diversity officer, adopted new rules that prohibit members from accepting gifts from studios and added its first outside board members. In October, it added 21 new journalists to its ranks, 29% of whom it said identified as Black.

How has Hollywood responded?

Celebrities like Scarlett Johansson and Mark Ruffalo criticized the HFPA for its proposed changes, arguing they fell short, and a timeline they felt was too long. Tom Cruise returned his three Golden Globes in protest. More than 100 PR firms threatened to boycott the HFPA, and Netflix, Amazon, WarnerMedia and Neon cut ties with the organization. NBC still isn’t airing the awards but left the door open for them to return in 2023 if the HFPA could demonstrate “meaningful reform.”

Oh, right, there’s also an award ceremony! What should I watch for?

On the film side, “Belfast” and “The Power of the Dog” dominated the nominations with seven each, with Campion, the latter’s director, favored to win her first Golden Globe. “King Richard,” “Don’t Look Up,” “Licorice Pizza” and “West Side Story” followed with four apiece. On the TV side, “Succession” received five nominations, followed by four for “Ted Lasso.” There’s a large crop of first-time nominees among the performers, including Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”) and Stewart (“Spencer”) in film, and Jeremy Strong (“Succession”), Jean Smart (“Hacks”), Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”), and Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany (“WandaVision”) on TV.

The field is more diverse than in years past, when artists of color were often overlooked: The best actor in a drama category features three Black contenders, Smith (“King Richard”), Denzel Washington (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”) and Mahershala Ali (“Swan Song”).

Wait, but can I even watch the Golden Globes?

No. A representative for the HFPA said the ceremony would be private and would not be livestreamed. Instead, real-time updates will be provided on the Golden Globes website and on social media.

What is happening with the 2022 Golden Globes?

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which organizes the annual Golden Globes, said on Friday it will present the awards for television and film in January despite the NBC television network deciding in May to no longer air the show.

The association has drawn criticism over ethics issues and a lack of racial diversity in its membership, prompting NBC to drop televising the Golden Globes that the group hosts. The group`s members also were accused of making sexist and racist remarks and soliciting favors from celebrities and studios.

The association said in a news release that nominations would be announced on Dec. 13 and that it would host the 79th annual Golden Globes ceremony on Jan. 9. The group did not make any announcement about whether the show would be televised.

The group in May agreed to recruit more Black members and make other changes, and in July banned its members from receiving gifts and free trips from movie studios and TV networks seeking to secure awards for their shows and stars.

The Golden Globes ceremony, attended by A-list stars and industry executives, established itself as one of the biggest annual Hollywood awards shows in the run-up to the Oscars. But it has been under close scrutiny following an investigation published in February by the Los Angeles Times that showed that the group of 87 journalists had no Black members.

Golden Globes still on, despite NBC dropping the awards show

The organisers of the Golden Globes on Friday banned its members from receiving gifts and free trips from movie studios and TV networks seeking to clinch awards for their shows and stars.

The reforms, approved by members of the small Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), are among a raft of changes to the organization following an uproar over ethical practices and lack of diversity that led to the 2022 Golden Globes ceremony being cancelled.

The HFPA said in a statement that under the new policies on conflicts of interest, members "shall not be permitted to accept promotional materials or other gifts from studios, publicists, actors, directors or others associated with motion pictures and television programmes."

Television network NBC in May dropped its broadcast of the January 2022 Golden Globes ceremony - one of the biggest awards shows in Hollywood - after an industry backlash over questionable practices. HFPA members were also accused of making sexist and racist remarks to celebrities at promotional events.

Tom Cruise returned his three Golden Globe statuettes as part of the revolt and media companies, including Netflix, Amazon Studios, and WarnerMedia, said they would no longer work with the HFPA unless it made far-reaching changes.

The HFPA has since embarked on reforms that range from a pledge to recruit Black members, appointing diversity consultants and setting up a hotline for grievances.

"With these updates, our members have completed virtually all of the reforms agreed upon in May," the HFPA statement said.

Golden Globe organisers agree ban on freebies

American film production and distribution company Neon has become the latest addition to the growing list of companies boycotting the Golden Globes.

.The indie studio behind `Parasite` and `I, Tonya` minced no words about what it sees as The Hollywood Foreign Press Association`s failures to enact meaningful reforms in the wake of a report that revealed that the group had no Black members, reported Variety.

The story also documented a history of ethical lapses by the organisation`s roughly 90 members, which included accepting gifts and junket travel from studios, and its questionable payment of members to sit on committees.

A spokesperson for Neon told Variety, "We will not participate in anything related to the HFPA until they reform the organization to reflect they are living in the 21st century."

In response, the HFPA approved a set of measures that it stated will increase the diversity of its organisation, such as admitting 20 new members in 2021, with a specific focus on recruiting Black members. The group also said it was placing restrictions on the gifts its voters can accept, and hiring a chief diversity equity and inclusion officer.

Neon has joined a growing number of studios that have said that they won`t participate in HFPA-sponsored press events. Amazon, WarnerMedia and Netflix are among the major companies that have said they will boycott the Globes.

They join a group of more than 100 high-profile publicity firms, including Rogers and Cowan/PMK, Narrative, ID-PR, The Lede, Viewpoint and 42 West, which have said that their clients will not participate in HFPA events until the organisation commits towards more meaningful changes.

On Monday, announcing that it will not air the Globes in 2022, NBC said, "We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right."

'Parasite' producer Neon boycotting Golden Globes until reforms by HFPA reflect

While a lot might have changed already but there are still some things that Golden Globes have to catch up on and that is nominations in the best director's list. Like last year, Golden Globes have again failed to include women directors in their list and people are not taking it lightly.

The 2020 Golden Globes Awards nominations list was announced today as 'Marriage Story', 'Irishman', 'Once Upon A Time in Hollywood', 'Joker' among others made a splash as they bagged a number of nods. Coming to the directors' list, five filmmakers have made it namely Bong Joon Ho for 'Parasite', Sam Mendes for '1917', Quentin Tarantino for 'Once Upon A Time In Hollywood', Martin Scorsese for 'The Irishman' and Todd Phillips for 'Joker'. See the full list of nominations here.

The omission of women directors from the list is quite glaring as this is a year dotted with celebrated work from women filmmakers like ‘Hustlers’ or ‘The Farewell’.

This might not come as a surprise but it shooks our belief that there is a serious change in the world’s one of the most prestigious entertainment industry. In all 77 years of Golden Globes only five women have been recognised for directing and only one woman has won. Barbra Streisand had won Golden Globes in 1984 for making ‘Yentl.’ Streisand was nominated again as director in 1992 for ‘The Prince of Tides.’

The other female director nominees from past years at the Golden Globes are Jane Campion for 1994 film ‘The Piano’, Sofia Coppola for 2004 film ‘Lost in Translation’, Kathryn Bigelow for 2010 film ‘The Hurt Locker’ and 2013 film ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ and finally Ava DuVernay for 2015 film ‘Selma’.

At the 2019 Golden Globes ceremony, actress Natalie Portman had even taken a dig at the organisers for omitting all female directors from their list last year when while announcing she said, “all male nominees” -- the meme ultimately became viral.
